Chapter 28: Justin's only Caution

His entire soul left his body.

Fuck.

But he kept his face cool as hell.

"Smell?" he repeated, tilting his head, pretending he hadn't just set this office on fire in ways that had nothing to do with actual flames.

Selena narrowed her eyes.

And then—oh, fuck—she sniffed again.

Twice.

Her nose scrunched.

Her gaze swept the room, then locked onto him like a predator that had just spotted a guilty-as-hell target.

Justin casually leaned back, adjusting his sleeve. "I don't smell anything."

Selena wasn't having it. She leaned forward, her eyes narrowing, the scent still bothering her. "No, seriously, what is that? It's... weird. Like—arousal?"

AROUSAL!

This was it.

This was how he died.

His own fucking aunt was about to sniff out the aftermath of whatever the hell he and Adams had done to this office.

Oh, hell no. He tried to think fast, his mind racing for an excuse. Justin kept it together, kept his expression smooth as he shrugged. "Uh, the AC's been acting up," he said, his face smooth as butter, "It's probably just the... system. You know how these..."

Selena tapped a manicured nail against the desk, still squinting.

Like she was almost putting the pieces together.

Like she could feel the remnants of something scandalous hanging in the air. Selena didn't look convinced by his words. Not even a little. She sniffed again, like a bloodhound on the trail. "No, it's definitely something else. It's like—" she leaned in, closer now, "—something fresh... like a hot mess of overheating arousal and... cologne?" Her voice dropped to a whisper, and she added, "Or is it... maybe someone spilled something?"

"Could be Adams' perfume," Justin said, dodging and weaving like a pro. "She likes to wear that expensive stuff. You know how it is."

Selena tilted her head, staring him down. "Really? Adams? Is she the one who smells like a damn forest fire and a whiff of whatever cologne you're trying to cover up?" She smirked. "Sounds like someone has been a little too busy around here."

Justin didn't breathe.

Selena's eyes narrowed one last time.

"Oh, come on," Justin rolled his eyes. "Really?" He was trying to play it off like it was nothing, but deep down, he was sweating bullets. "I'm telling you, Auntie, it's just business."

"Uh-huh," Selena said, her eyes scanning the room like she was looking for some hidden clue. "Well, I won't push it. Just don't let her perfume start smelling like trouble, Justin. I trust your judgment, but let's not have any... misunderstandings." She rolled her shoulders and seemed to have dropped it.

Thank. Fucking. God.

Justin smirked.

Justin was trying really hard not to sweat bullets. Selena had that look in her eyes—that look—the one that said she was a hundred percent about to figure out what he was up to. Problem was, he wasn't really hiding anything between him and Adams. Not exactly.

It wasn't like he'd been trying to sneak around. Hell, no. The problem was... well, this was the first day in his damn office. If Selena figured out he was already banging board members... well, she'd definitely be disappointed. And when it came to his aunt, disappointment was the last thing Justin wanted.

Disappointment with business, fine. Disappointment with him, though? Not so much. She was his only caution.

Sure, Selena was all for taking risks in business—they'd trained him to be like that—but there were boundaries. Sexual relationships with board members?

Yeah, that was a boundary she wasn't gonna let slide, especially when they'd just gotten started. He was supposed to be getting things done, not diving headfirst into office drama before the ink even dried on the damn contracts. She'd be looking at him like some kind of douchebag playboy instead of the sharp, cold business tycoon he was pretending to be.

He was pretty sure the "playboy" look wouldn't go over too well in her eyes.

Selena wasn't blind to how the game worked, but her focus was always his image in the business first. She'd probably say something like, "You're supposed to be running a company, not running a damn brothel, Justin!" And honestly, he'd never hear the end of it. He could already picture her smug smile, a cocktail of disappointment and a bit of judgment in her gaze.

But damn, it was hard to resist. Adams? She was just... something else he needed for his success and the safety of his aunt. She'd gotten into the office that morning, and he "thrown out a couple offers," and by the time lunch came around, she was more than willing to accept that assistant and PR position. Her charm? Unbelievable. Her energy? Unstoppable. And Justin? Well, let's just say he'd been strongly persuaded.

But the thing was, he had to make sure Selena didn't smell the entire situation just yet.

Not this early. Not before he could settle into the role, figure out how to run things without looking like a damn idiot. So he had to play it cool—no sweat, no drama. Not yet.

Selena raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh. Sure, sure. Let's just leave it at that, huh?" She walked toward the door, giving him one last look. "Just don't screw it up, Justin. You've got potential, but don't start getting wrapped up in personal drama. Not now. Not when you're just getting started."

Justin gave her a quick nod. "Got it. Anything else, Auntie?"

Selena exhaled, shaking her head. "No, let's just say I came to make sure you weren't doing anything stupid."

Justin grinned. "You wound me."

Selena rolled her eyes, grabbing her bag. "Anyway, I have a meeting. Be good, alright, "she sighed, "I swear, you Justin nowadays you're becoming a handful," she muttered, "You think you can get away with anything. The last thing I want is scandals Justin..." She was genuinely worried.

Justin let out a relieved laugh, just as she grabbed her bag. "Don't worry, Auntie, I've got it all under control."

Selena paused, her hand on the door. "I hope so. Because last thing I need is to hear from someone else about your 'business meetings'... You're not that good at hiding everything."

Justin's grin widened. "I'll try to keep it under wraps. If I fail I've got my auntie to cover my teenager ass." Justin laughed, standing as she turned to leave.

Selena rolled her eyes,"Don't start. Try not to cause any disasters before lunch."

And the second the door shut?

He collapsed back in his chair, rubbing a hand down his face.

Holy. Fucking. Hell.

That had been way too close.
