Chapter 49: I Trust My Daughter

Victor Malverin wasn’t born into power. He took whatever and everything he ever desired with his very own hands and wit.

Born the third son of the noble Malverin House, a house that has been close to the royal family for generations, where every next family head is guaranteed the role of the kingdom’s grand vizier, should they be just a little competent and proactive about it.

Competency and proactivity are the base requirements. It simply means having the gall to lay claim to what should rightfully be yours.

But Victor’s father, the late Charles Malverin, and former family head, wasn’t a competent man, and he had failed to step into the role of grand vizier just like his father before him. Victor despised the man’s incompetence.

You see, Victor had a secret, a secret he kept buried from his parents and family growing up.

A year after his awakening ritual, due to some mix of varied events, he had triggered an awakening of a special skill. A decently high-grade one, as it turns out. Victor was also nineteen at the time.

Victor could now tell the nature or alignment of an individual by the color spectrum radiating around them whenever he focused. He wasn’t completely sure what this depended on, but he found it most effective for dealing with people.

The spectrum is always between pure glimmering white and progressively darker shades of white, until black, then progressively darker shades of black.

Victor noticed that those with very white shades around them are usually very nice, kind, and pure-hearted people. Victor tagged them the pushovers.

These ones he can easily manipulate, deal with them if need be, or just let them be as long as they don’t affect his plans, since he considers them harmlessly passive.

Victor Malverin’s Father, Charles Malverin, fell into this group.

Then for the darker shades of white, like the light grey, the grey, the light brown, the brown, the dark brown, and so on, on that spectrum.

This range encompasses most of the humans Victor has interacted with, though the darker the shade of white, the more careful Victor has to be around the person, and the more untrustworthy the person is.

He has the option to either place a leash on them to command control and respect, or, if there is no balance to be met, he makes certain he strikes first before they get to.

Then there is the dark-to-darker spectrum.

Victor has only seen one person on the dark spectrum like that, and that person had been a commoner, who was a serial murderer that plagued the kingdom for years, who was eventually caught by the royal enforcers, exposed as a sympathizer of the demons, and eventually publicly executed by the royal enforcers.

This happened when Victor was twenty-five years old, and the previous family head, his father, had just passed away. Leaving his elder brother as the next person to succeed him in the role of family head.

During all these events, Victor came to understand the essence of his special skill. It told him who was weak, who was simply useful, who was useful but dangerous, and who had to be put down.

Observing his brother, he noticed he shared the same white spectrum around him like their late father; meaning their family, which is already on freefall, after losing the position of grand vizier during their father’s rule, would continue down that path because his weak elder sibling would be stepping up as the family haed next, and would no doubt choose the cowards way as well.

Victor decides to cut out the decay.

Both eldest son’s of the Malverin house tragically lost their lives to an accident. And the third son automatically became the head of the family.

That signaled the Malverin family’s rise once again.

Over the next ten years, the Malverin family had once again reclaimed their former glory and even surpassed it. Though many disappearances were common during this time.

Victor achieved his goals, but was unsatisfied; he believed his family should also have a shot at the throne, and it shouldn’t be just the Starfalls holding on to power for generations after generations. And that’s when his current moves began.

But just a year after that move began, Victor welcomed the most important thing into his life: his lovely daughter Kaelara, the apple of his eye.

Victor grew into his role as a father and raised his daughter well.

Even though he was still making different moves to achieve his goals, he could always count on the fact that his daughter had grown up chaste and pure of heart.

He dotes on her quite a lot, since she’s his only child and all. Giving her everything she needed and more certainly made her very independent and left her with zero interest in men, since they have nothing to offer her, turning down suitors here and there.

This made him very happy and more convinced that he had raised his daughter right. Only the best of men would be allowed to marry his chaste and pure daughter.

He is never worried about her safety because he always provides her with enough artifacts to ensure that. So, he is always relaxed and focused on other things.

But the news his head guard had just brought him now was a little concerning.

Sitting behind an ornate desk, inside a study decked with shelves filled with books, and all sorts of luxurious items. Victor stroked his single mustache as he muttered in a concerned tone to his head guard standing directly in front of his desk.

"Kaela only came in this morning ?" Victor inquired from his trusted guard aide.

"Yes, my lord. I believe she went out last night, but since she often has the artifact of regar active, it was impossible to take note of her departure."

Victor nodded in understanding. He had given many artifacts to his daughter for her protection. Including the artifact of regar, a legendary stealth assassin and master of disguise. Its not surprising that she couldn’t be tracked easily.

Still. Victor smiled warmly, thinking about his daughter as he uttered...

"Don’t worry, I trust my daughter. I am certain she’s always doing the right thing."

"Maybe she’s planning to surprise me... You know my birthday’s coming up soon." Victor said proudly.
