Super Soldier in the City-Chapter 2197 - 2261: The Poison Is Taking Effect
By the time they arrived at the hospital, it was already evening. Everyone was busy until now and hadn’t eaten. Li Yifei and the group went to the ward, and seeing Li Yifei again, the doctors and nurses were even more excited. Noticing a few people following him, they stopped in their tracks, and the older doctor came over.
"Doctor, how is he?" Li Yifei asked.
The doctor replied, "He woke up once before, but he’s still weak. However, he’s in good condition."
"Thank you, but can I go in? I still need to give him some additional treatment," Li Yifei asked.
The doctor said hesitantly, "Technically, you can’t go in because there are bacteria. But... since it’s for treatment, alright, just make sure to clean up first."
Li Yifei was then led by a nurse to change into a set of specialized clothes and went into the ICU. Holding Hawk’s hand, he performed a True Qi treatment. By this time, the True Qi within him was almost depleted. Even though he had improved a lot, he still found it insufficient.
Coming out of the treatment, Li Yifei felt a bit tired. The others were okay, just a bit downcast. Li Yifei asked the doctors to take care of things and found a restaurant not far from the hospital. He reserved a private room and ordered a table full of dishes.
Once the food was served, Li Yifei raised his glass and looked at everyone, saying, "Brothers, let’s put today’s events behind us. Although it was a bit aggravating, I’ve left my word in that building. The person who hurt Hawk must die, otherwise, I have plenty of ways to make that person die, so let’s set this aside for now. When Hawk is discharged, we’ll drink again, but for now, let’s take it slow."
"Alright!"
"Boss, you don’t need to explain, we understand!"
"Come on, brothers, let’s drink one for Hawk. We’ll drink his share for him!"
After a few drinks, the atmosphere eased up. Li Yifei and his brothers clinked glasses and, buoyed by the alcohol, everyone loosened up. Some couldn’t help but start grumbling about their current lives. They’ve all been through life and death situations, even countless dangers, and now, from the crossfire of guns, they’ve suddenly returned to modern society, a civilized society. Don’t even mention holding a gun; carrying a small knife could get them charged with illegal possession of a controlled weapon.
Aside from killing and military skills, there are many things in life they don’t even understand and need to relearn. All at their age, it’s quite difficult. At work, their straightforward personality is a common flaw; they can’t tolerate the slightest provocation, making it easy to offend others. Sometimes, they don’t even realize they’re being played, which is frustrating but unavoidable.
After drinking, those who could go home did, and those who couldn’t went with Li Yifei to a hotel.
Everyone had homes and businesses, so they went home, leaving only Li Yifei and Zheng Mingrui.
"Boss, why don’t you stay at my place? Wanqing and I just bought a place. It’s clean and spacious!"
"No, you go home. I’m fine. I’ll head back to the hotel and catch some sleep before I have to go to the airport to pick someone up!" Li Yifei shook his head and said.
"Then I’ll go with you; Wanqing won’t mind!" Zheng Mingrui said with a laugh.
"Get lost, why would I want you to come along? Just go home and be quiet. Don’t drive; leave the car and pick it up tomorrow!" Li Yifei slapped Zheng Mingrui on the shoulder.
Zheng Mingrui wanted to say more, but Li Yifei was already waving his hand, turning to hail a taxi, saying, "Make sure to check in on Hawk often. I might be busy for a while heading back to Ning Province, but I’ll be here when Hawk is discharged."
"Got it, boss. Let me know when you reach the hotel!" Zheng Mingrui shouted.
Sitting in the taxi, Li Yifei smiled. Everyone was changing, adapting to society, or getting assimilated by it. Why bother thinking so much? These brothers have homes, businesses, responsibilities, and duties. Being able to come and help out of a sense of justice is already very impressive. Why expect more?
Thinking about this, Li Yifei became enlightened, no longer as troubled. He closed his eyes, reflecting on the day’s events, and took out his phone to see numerous messages, some from his wives at home and others from Wu Shuwei. After replying to his wives’ messages, Li Yifei checked Wu Shuwei’s and found she had sent two. The first asked him: "How are you? My dad came home and didn’t seem too happy, saying you’re a bastard. Did you upset him?"
The second: "Please reply when you see this. I asked my dad, and he said you don’t need to worry about that matter. Focus on going home to treat Su Lio; there are plenty of people on the search, and there shouldn’t be any issues. Reply when you see this."
Li Yifei thought for a moment and replied, "I saw it. Just had a drink with a few brothers."
Ding ding, just as Li Yifei sent the message, Wu Shuwei replied, asking, "How much did you drink? Are you drunk? Do you have a place to stay?"
"Not drunk, but nowhere to stay!"
"You’re lying, Li Yifei. Don’t be so shameless. I haven’t punished you for what you did when you got off the car today!" Wu Shuwei was lying in bed and immediately flipped herself over after receiving the message, pressing down on her chest, gritting her teeth, and sent another message, "Evil, you’re too evil."
"Haha, then you can always kiss back." Li Yifei replied.
"Dream on. I’m warning you, don’t do that again, or else I’ll really... I’ll go to a place where you’ll never find me!" Seeing such words, Li Yifei instantly felt at ease. This girl couldn’t escape; her intelligence was dropping rapidly. Indeed, love makes a woman’s intelligence pitifully low.
"As long as you’re on Earth, I’ll find you!" Li Yifei replied.
"Pfft, I don’t believe it. If I go somewhere, you’ll definitely not find me." Wu Shuwei replied.
"Where?"
"If I tell you, won’t you find it?"
"Then let me guess, hmm, I can’t find you in the quilt."
"Shameless, I’m not talking to you anymore, tell me when you get to the hotel."
"I really have no place to stay, why don’t you believe me?" Li Yifei replied.
The phone rang, it was Wu Shuwei’s number, Li Yifei picked up, and Wu Shuwei quietly asked, "Do you really have no place to stay?"
"No, I’ve been busy all day today, how could I have time to book?"
"From the sound of your voice, you’ve drunk a lot?"
"Yeah, I drank too much today."
"Then, look, just stay put where you are, don’t move, I’ll book a room for you and have the hotel send a car to pick you up!" Wu Shuwei said.
"Haha, that’s not good. If you come to pick me up, then I’d be happy."
"Get lost, did you forget what I said?"
Li Yifei grinned and said, "I didn’t forget, but didn’t I drink too much? My mind and body are not quite following orders. You see, these days I’m used to hugging you to sleep, and suddenly I can’t, my heart feels a bit lost."
"No seriousness, alright, I’m not talking to you anymore, I’m hanging up the phone and booking a room now." Wu Shuwei said and was about to hang up, and just at that moment the driver stepped on the brakes and turned to Li Yifei, saying, "Sir, we’ve reached the Regal Hotel."
There was suddenly no sound from Wu Shuwei’s side. Li Yifei took out money and paid the fare, and as he got out of the car, he heard Wu Shuwei snort, saying, "Alright, you tricked me."
"I just wanted you to come out and keep me company, so I used some underhanded methods!"
"Hung up, shameless." Wu Shuwei was about to hang up again, but Li Yifei wouldn’t let her, so he asked, "Weiwei, what did you tell your dad?"
"I didn’t say anything!" Wu Shuwei’s tone became heavier, and you could hear her breathing.
"That can’t be, your father said a lot to me today." Li Yifei shook his head.
"Who?"
"Father-in-law, also known as ’the old bamboo’, that’s your father." Li Yifei said as he walked into the hotel, afraid there’d be no signal in the elevator, Li Yifei simply walked up the stairs. Seeing that Wu Shuwei wasn’t responding, he added, "It’s true, I’m not lying to you."
Wu Shuwei’s hand holding the phone was sweating. She recalled how during the day, while discussing things, her father seemed to have seen through some things, even probing her. Wu Shuwei made an excuse to leave, but with what Li Yifei said, she began to worry.
She was a non-believer in marriage, a skeptic of love. This was one of the reasons her parents allowed her to work outside, and often be away. If all of a sudden they knew she was involved with a man like that, what changes would happen in her parent’s attitude? Most importantly, Wu Shuwei felt ashamed of herself. The things she used to proudly proclaim, how did they change so easily? Where did her principles go?
Wu Shuwei, oh Wu Shuwei, what’s gone wrong with you? Did this man cast some kind of spell on you, and now the poison is taking effect?
Li Yifei called out a few times, and seeing that Wu Shuwei wasn’t responding, he couldn’t help but mutter to himself, "Looks like I’ve passed the parental test. Father-in-law is still quite satisfied with me. You see, we’ve conquered a major hurdle, so I’m saying, Weiwei, could you bear to let me be here in this hotel, drunk, unable to sleep alone?"
"You’re really annoying when you drink too much!" Wu Shuwei’s voice calmed back down. She suddenly thought about how her old man, though sometimes endearing, in matters of great importance, is always wise and very rational. As for herself, her daughter’s affairs, he wouldn’t react like that, so Li Yifei was tricking her. Wu Shuwei, realizing this, grunted heavily and said, "You scoundrel, you dared to lie to me."
"Heaven and earth as witnesses, today I was called to the office by your father. He started right off talking about us, and caught me off guard. I thought you had already admitted it, so I didn’t deny it, and now you’re blaming me!" Li Yifei shouted his injustice.
Opening the door, Li Yifei entered the room. Wu Shuwei frowned, Li Yifei’s words seemed very real, so were they true or false?
"I’m not lying to you, what I just said is true. Today he couldn’t pressure me with his government position, so he took up the role of father-in-law to pressure me, that’s why I obediently went to drink with my brothers, instead of going after those terrorists."
