Chapter 103: Chapter 103: The Grandson Can’t Live Without Luna

Luna Axton and Blaze Fairchild stood outside the hospital room, listening to the conversation between Julian Fairchild and Yvonne Rhodes inside.

"Miss Rhodes, our Blaze is already married." Grandpa Fairchild’s voice was noticeably colder. "Let me make things perfectly clear to you today. With or without Luna, you are not someone the Fairchild family would ever approve of."

A hush fell over the room. Yvonne Rhodes said nothing.

Then they heard Grandpa Fairchild continue, "The Fairchild family is at the apex of society here in Valoria. A person’s family background isn’t our primary concern; we have high standards for personal character."

"Every time you came to Fairchild Estate with your uncle, I treated you with courtesy and a smile. That’s because I was treating you as a guest, not because I’m particularly fond of you."

"Your behavior today was truly out of line. If it weren’t for your uncle, I would have called the police directly."

"One must be self-aware of one’s own station. Constantly acting meek and subservient to achieve your goals will only make others look down on you. A person should stand on their own two feet, be strong and independent."

Julian Fairchild’s words were harsh. Yvonne Rhodes froze on the spot, a colorful array of emotions flashing across her face.

But she wasn’t about to give up just because of his words.

Yvonne Rhodes wiped at the non-existent tears at the corners of her eyes, her expression on the verge of crying, as if she had suffered a terrible injustice.

"Grandpa Fairchild, you’ve misunderstood me. I didn’t come here today to see Ian. My aunt heard you were sick and asked me to come visit you and, while I was here, to present a silk banner to the doctors."

"Hah." Upon hearing this, Julian Fairchild let out a cold laugh. ’Truly stubborn until the bitter end.’

"I watched Kai grow up, too. He’s just like his father—stubborn and single-minded. If Kai had been born into an ordinary family, he would’ve just been an honest, unassuming, and average kid. But he happened to have a father who’s an official and a mother who’s wealthy. He has both money and power, but not enough brains to go with them."

At this, Julian Fairchild’s gaze suddenly turned sharp and terrifying, like a hawk eyeing its prey.

Yvonne Rhodes felt a chill run down her spine and lowered her head, not daring to meet his eyes.

"As for what happened with Kai, you deserve most of the credit." This statement undoubtedly shattered the last of Yvonne Rhodes’s defenses.

"Grandpa Fairchild, you..."

Her voice trembling, Yvonne Rhodes subconsciously tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear to hide her fear.

"What are you talking about? I don’t understand. I’ve finished the task my aunt gave me, so I’ll be leaving now."

She frantically grabbed her handbag from the sofa, her steps unsteady.

A faint smile touched Julian Fairchild’s lips as he watched her flustered state. He warned her again, "If you didn’t do it, then naturally no one will know. But if you did, you’re bound to have left a trail. You’d better watch yourself."

Yvonne Rhodes swayed, nearly collapsing to the floor.

She steadied herself against the wall and fled the hospital room with frantic, unsteady steps.

Ahead of her, a pair of black leather shoes and a pair of pink snow boots came into view.

She snapped her head up. "Pres... President."

Luna Axton saw her pale face and disheveled long hair. Her red lipstick seemed even redder, making her look a bit frightening.

’What on earth did Yvonne Rhodes do to be this terrified by Grandpa Fairchild’s words?’

Blaze Fairchild showed no hint of chivalry, his expression cold. "If you still can’t recognize your own place..."

"President, I know I was wrong, I’m sorry," Yvonne Rhodes apologized, nodding repeatedly. "I’ll never appear before you again. I’m leaving right now."

The man she adored had just heard the entire conversation. Getting caught red-handed after trying to take credit for something felt like being stripped naked in public. Yvonne Rhodes was mortified.

She couldn’t bear to face Ian again. After speaking, she brushed past the two of them and hurried toward the fire escape, not even daring to take the elevator.

The elevators were near the nurses’ station, and she was afraid of being ridiculed.

Yvonne Rhodes gripped the handrail, taking a few steps down the stairs before her light-headed steps came to a sudden halt.

She leaned against the wall to steady herself, gazing at the sunlight outside the window and gasping for air as if she’d been reborn.

’My uncle has already left Valoria. If I want to keep living here, my only support is my aunt.’

’If my aunt finds out that what happened with Kai and Eliana Yates was my idea, she won’t protect me anymore.’

’If my aunt abandons me, anyone in Valoria could take advantage of me.’

’Before my aunt finds out, I have to find a new backer for myself.’

’I don’t want to go back to the countryside, I don’t want to wear cheap clothes, and I certainly don’t want to eat unhealthy food every day.’

’Julian Fairchild said he doesn’t care about family background? How is that possible?’

’In the circles of the rich and powerful, family interests and reputation are paramount.’

’If someone were to threaten Evergrow Group or damage the Fairchild family’s reputation, would they still not care about background?’

Yvonne Rhodes’s teeth ground audibly. She clenched her fists, her resolve hardening. No matter the cost, she would ruin the Fairchild family’s name and fortune, and make them fall from their pedestal.

Yvonne Rhodes left.

Only then did Blaze Fairchild and Luna Axton enter the hospital room.

"Luna, you’re here." Julian Fairchild’s expression softened into a kind smile.

"Yes, Grandpa." Luna Axton stood there obediently, her heart still racing. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

If it weren’t for the fact that Grandpa Fairchild was the only one in the room, Luna would have wondered if the stern man who had been speaking just moments ago was really him.

Just listening from the doorway had sent chills down her spine; she had never seen Grandpa Fairchild be so fierce.

"Did Grandpa scare you?"

"A little," Luna Axton admitted with a strained smile.

"Don’t worry, Grandpa would never be that fierce with you," Julian Fairchild promised kindly.

"Okay," she replied, and silence fell over the room.

’They had such a huge fight that day. I wonder if Grandpa Fairchild and Blaze have made up yet?’

Unsure of what to do, Luna Axton went over to Blaze Fairchild, intending to help him pack.

Julian Fairchild watched the young couple’s backs.

Blaze didn’t let Luna help, just asked her to stay by his side.

’My grandson spoils her rotten. How could I dare treat Luna even the slightest bit poorly?’

’The day they argued, my grandson threatened to move out with Luna.’

And over these past three days, he had seen things even more clearly.

The first day the young couple was apart, his grandson had hidden under the covers, texting with a blissful look on his face.

The next morning, right after the doctor’s rounds, he had rushed home, only to return with a delighted expression.

Last night was even more outrageous. He actually left him, a patient, alone in the hospital room to go home to his wife.

He had been through it all before. Seeing how protective his grandson was of Luna, how could he not understand what was in his grandson’s heart?

’It seems that for the rest of his life, his grandson can’t live without Luna.’

’As long as the grandson he raised is happy, he can rest easy.’

Blaze Fairchild finished packing Grandpa Fairchild’s belongings from the hospital stay, and Caleb carried them downstairs first.

As the three of them were leaving, a nurse hurried after them. "Mr. Fairchild, please wait a moment."

The nurse handed over a few slips of paper. "This is Old Master Fairchild’s medication list and post-discharge care instructions. And about what happened today, I’m truly sorry to you and Mrs. Fairchild."

Luna Axton recognized her as one of the two nurses who had been at the nurses’ station for the banner presentation earlier.

Blaze Fairchild took the papers and glanced at them. "It had nothing to do with you. As long as it’s resolved, it’s fine."

Hearing this, the nurse breathed a sigh of relief.

On the way back, Blaze Fairchild drove, while Luna Axton and Julian Fairchild sat in the back.

"Uncle Foster told me everything," Julian Fairchild said, breaking the silence in the car. "Luna, thank you and your mother for saving my life."

"Blaze did a lot, too. When he saw you collapse, he actually cried. He was crying while performing chest compressions."

"Ahem." Blaze Fairchild cleared his throat.

’He was a grown man of six-foot-two, he had a reputation to maintain, you know? How could they just go around telling people he cried?’

"None of us thought about your medicine at the time. If you’re going to thank someone, you should really be thanking Mom."

That day, it was Jenna Axton who had found the fast-acting heart pills.

If Jenna Axton hadn’t been keeping Julian Fairchild company regularly, who would have known he secretly kept emergency heart medication on him?

The image of Rosalind Fairchild standing aside with her arms crossed, watching coldly as if it had nothing to do with her, was still vivid in her mind.

Rosalind Fairchild’s intentions were blatantly obvious.

She wanted to inherit his shares, so of course, she was hoping Grandpa Fairchild would die sooner rather than later.

But no one would ever tell Julian Fairchild any of this. The old man wouldn’t be able to bear it.
