Chapter 358: Lasagna Too Late

Looking back, grabbing a gun. Then going over to Sebastian Haven’s penthouse and trying to slap the truth out of him had been a very bad idea. In fact, on a scale of zero to ten of bad ideas. It was a solid hundred.

But in their defence, they had not been themselves. Being told that your children had been hurt and then rushing to the hospital.

Only to learn that they had been shot, and that the doctors were not sure when they would wake up. That was enough to make even the most level-headed of people act out of character. She and Cassandra had been working purely on emotions at that point. Their thoughts had been just focused on one thing.

Getting justice for their children. It was a pity that that decision had ended up being what saved Sebastian from meeting swift justice. He had run away.

Jane’s first impressions of the man had not been good, but as time went on it became even worse. Now she knew for a fact that he had killed her husband. That he had also murdered his own brother in cold blood. Had thought nothing about killing Emily, and Derek when they were children. That even now he did not hesitate to pull a gun on his own nephew and shoot directly at him.

He was also a womanizer, a bad boss, lazy, disloyal, and he even drank too much. If the attribute was negative, then Sebastian Haven was sure to have it. There were no redeeming features about Sebastian Haven.

Scum like him should never have walked the earth at all. But even so, Sebastian Haven’s extreme tactics had somehow awakened the memories that their children had repressed. Jane would not ever be thanking him for that. But she was grateful that her Emily had her memories back.

After it had come to light that thanks to her, and Cassie’s actions, Sebastian had managed to run away. The four of them had been trying to brainstorm ways to go after him in another country. Cassandra’s suggestion was that they hire a hitman.

Get the job over and done with. Then never have to worry about the man again.

Normally Jane was not the type of person who condoned violence like that. But there was something about Sebastian Haven that just brought out her darkest qualities. She was ashamed to say that she had been taking Cassandra’s suggestion seriously.

The only reason that she had turned it down was because she had seen the horrified looks that their children were giving them.

"Sebastian Haven is a murderer without remorse. Do not let him turn the two of you into that," Her Emily had said, Derek nodding along in agreement, and Jane had looked over at Cassandra. Their emotions might have been going haywire.

Causing the two of them to act in ways that they never would have before. But they had raised good kids. Children who were somehow still able to hold themselves together. They were bruised, shot and in hospital. But they were still holding on to the values of preserving life, instead of killing.

But Jane still wished that they had a bit more vindictiveness in them though. Whywere they so calm about this! They should have been wanting revenge. Not coming up with reasons to keep Sebastian alive!

At least that was what Jane thought until Derek opened his mouth.

"Death is too good and too swift for my uncle. He has to stick around first and suffer," Emily nodded her agreement.

"Derek is right. He has spent 20 years living in luxury while our fathets are buried underground. Sebastian deserves to feel nothing but pain and discomfort for the rest of his life," Jane had never heard her daughter sound so hateful.

"Hopefully the changing scenery from mansions and penthouses to a jail cell won’t kill him too quick. He will live a long life and ’suffer every single day’,"

The ’suffer every single day’ was said and unison.

And it was so creepy, and so full of rage that it made Jane and Cassandra look over at one another, wide eyed.

They might have raised good children who were not into murder. But they had definitely not raised pushovers. Derek and Emily had vengeance in them.

But even though they had vengeance in them, they were still in hospital, recovering from a near death experience. A point that Jane was reminded of when Emily yawned.

Next to her, Derek’s eyes slid shut, and he forced them open. The simple action seeming to take a lot from him.

"Why don’t you two rest up a bit? We will continue this discussion when you’ve gotten some sleep," Cassandra suggested. And the two of them instantly began shaking their heads. Despite all of the wisdom that they had just shown. Doing that made them look like unhappy toddlers, and Jane could not help but smile fondly at them.

"We are not tired. We can still do this." Emily said, rubbing her uninjured hand over her eyes. That should not have looked so cute, but it melted Jane’s heart.

"Let’s take a break then. How about you guys tell us what you remember? I have always wanted to know what their final moments were like," Jane said, it was a sad topic to pick, but it was something that was still eating away at her, even after all of the time that had passed. She had to know.

And from the way that Cassandra was suddenly leaning forward into her son’s personal space. She too wanted to know what her husband’s final words had been. That cleared some of the sleep from Emily’s eyes. And she smiled over at her mother.

"He wanted me to tell you that he loved you very, very much. And he told me to tell you to eat the lasagna that he’d put away for himself in the fridge, that he wouldn’t mind it,"

Oh, of all things for Peter to have been thinking about. It had to be lasagna. Silly man, a joker till the end.

Staring at Emily, Jane found herself crying. She remembered exactly what Lasagna, her daughter, was talking about. Peter had made it the night before. Barely managing to save some for himself, Jane having nearly devoured all of it.

After his death, Jane had not been able to make herself throw it away, or eat it. She had kept it in the freezer for months, often bringing it out when Emily was away at school to cry over it.

Had she known that he wanted her to have just one last thing from him. She would have forced it down, tears and all. But now it was too late, she had thrown it all out, a few months after his death.

"He also said that it was alright to cry for him for a little bit, but then you had to pull yourself together, and keep going because that is what life is about," Emily said. Jane nodded vigorously, wiping away at her tears.

"Thank you for that, Em," I really needed it. Jane meant every word. Her heart felt settled for the first time in a really long time. When everything was done, she would be sure to visit her husband’s grave and apologize for not having eaten the lasagna. She hoped he was not too cut up over it.
