Reborn Heiress: Seeking Revenge-Chapter 680 Shared Life and Death (4)_1
The entire space was permeated with a thick stench of blood. The living insects on the ground were ceaselessly devouring the corpses of their counterparts, their bodies growing larger with each meal. Among the insects, a hierarchy formed based on size. In front of Lin Mengjie were three half-human, half-insect monsters. They had glaring green eyes and were making CHIRPING sounds, though it was unclear what they were trying to say. They resembled scorpion-men, with long scorpion-like tails, insect lower halves, and human upper halves, while their heads were also half-human, half-insect.
The constant CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP sounds grew louder as Lin Mengjie hovered mid-air, facing them. With a BANG, the insects feeding below were suddenly sucked into the mouths of the scorpion-men. Their crunching sounds were loud and clear as blood spilled and severed limbs dropped from the corners of their mouths.
A wave of disgust surged from the depths of Shangguan You’s heart. These creatures are damn inhuman, eating their own kind to evolve, to gain power. If these three monsters were let loose, who knows how many people would end up in their bellies.
"What species are these things? Why are they so disgusting?" Ye Ershao, who was usually cold and detached, furrowed his brows intensely at the sight before him, now standing beside Shangguan You.
"They are nothing but beasts; only beasts would cannibalize their own kind," Shangguan You said coldly. What species are they? How would I know? I only know they’re evil and must die here today, or the entire world will be doomed.
CACKLE, CACKLE, CACKLE. The three monsters let out strange cries, their pairs of green eyes emitting a ghostly glow like venomous snakes, fixed intently on Shangguan You. Their half-human, half-insect bodies kept making eerie noises. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"Girl, shut up, don’t talk," Lin Mengjie sharply warned, her expression one of unprecedented gravity, as she quickly positioned herself beside Shangguan You. The whole space was engulfed in a dense scent of blood. The fight for survival continued, and stealthy insect attacks persisted. What exactly the three monsters were screeching about remained unknown.
"Mommy, do you have a way to directly close the opened crack?" Shangguan You asked, watching the entities below slam against the ice layer, even creating fissures in the thick ice. She frowned. "They aren’t moving now. Could they be waiting for something?"
"Hmm, we can’t close it now. If we seal it off, they will remain here forever, which could lead to endless troubles. We must drive them all back before we can close the passage again," Lin Mengjie shook her head. She planned to force each creature back to where it belonged before resealing the portal.
"What are they waiting for?" Ye Ershao raised an eyebrow, observing the three green-eyed monsters whose gaze was cold and unfeeling. A glance from them made Ye Ershao feel uncomfortable all over.
"This isn’t good," Lin Mengjie exclaimed, casting her Five-Colored Spiritual Energy onto the insects below, who were tearing at each other. They were cannibalizing at a visible pace, growing rapidly from small bodies into larger ones. If they continued unchecked, a fourth and fifth monster would emerge, complicating matters further.
CACKLE, CACKLE. Two of the monsters blocked Lin Mengjie, obstructing her moves. Shangguan You could clearly see their swift movements—vicious and sharp—their long, pointed claws seemingly coated with poison, emitting black mist. Working in tandem, one on each side, they trapped Lin Mengjie in the middle, preventing her from addressing the cannibalistic behavior of their kind.
"Girl, destroy those things! We can’t let them continue feeding," Lin Mengjie commanded sharply, her hand surging with increasingly potent Five-Colored Spiritual Energy. The two monsters, slippery as eels, dodged each brilliant flash of multicolored light that skimmed past them. It was clear they feared Lin Mengjie’s Five-Colored Spiritual Energy and dared not come into contact with it.
"I understand," Shangguan You nodded. A pale blue water mist materialized in her hand, and she directed her attack at all the insect creatures on the ground.
"Ice Seal," she called out lightly. The insects, previously feeding with gusto, once again turned into ice sculptures. "Release," she commanded again. Apart from the weaker insects, which were split into pieces, the other larger insects emerged intact. Their eyes shone with a sinister red glow, fixating on Shangguan You like venomous snakes.
They aren’t afraid of the cold?
CACKLE, CACKLE, CACKLE. With a strange laugh, another monster rapidly approached Shangguan You and launched an attack. The surrounding air filled with a chilling aura that made Shangguan You shiver involuntarily.
"Courting death," Shangguan You snapped. Inferno Fire engulfed the monster. The previously icy space blazed with heat again, so intense it felt as if one’s own body were on fire.
CACKLE, CACKLE. The monster screeched a few times, moving even faster and appearing extremely excited. It ignored the insects Shangguan You had burnt to a crisp on the ground and, with a wave of its hands, eagerly devoured its charred kin.
"Freak," Shangguan You cursed under her breath. Her Inferno Fire turned the insect corpses on the ground to ash. Try eating that now! she thought.
CACKLE, CACKLE! Grasping at nothing, the monster screeched in frustration. Shangguan You knew she had destroyed its food source, and it was furious.
"Courting death? This young lady will oblige you," Shangguan You retorted, sending a silent surge of electricity toward the monster. ZZZT! The monster tried to dodge, but Shangguan You struck it squarely, causing smoke to rise from its body.
"Try this," Shangguan You said, eyeing the green-eyed creature. The chains of light from the Gold Spiritual Bead in her hand shone brightly as they attacked the monster. Shangguan You directed all the power from her Five Spirit Pearls at it, eliciting piercing shrieks as she inflicted multiple wounds. Blood oozed from its body, making it look even more ferocious and vicious. It licked its lips, as if wanting to devour Shangguan You whole. The entire space was now filled with a thick reek of blood.
