One Night Stand With Alexander Blackwood-Chapter 37 — Thirty-seven
Watching Grant lead him to the hall, Alexander’s body trembled. The image of Serena—almost lifeless when he had opened the door—flashed vividly in his mind.
And now Grant thought he could use him? That was impossible. Instead, Alexander would make sure the man’s farce was exposed and shattered.
They finally reached the hall where the banquet was being held. Along the way, Grant attempted to make small talk, but Alexander remained silent, offering no response.
The moment Alexander stepped into the banquet hall, his eyes swept across the room. He immediately recognized two or three individuals whose companies had business ties with his own.
The guests’ eyes widened in unison. They recognized him—there was no doubt about that. But Alexander was certain of the single question running through their minds.
Why was he here?
"What is he doing here?" One of the guests whispered to the other person standing beside him.
"I’m not sure. But I have a feeling we are about to watch a show." The other person replied while he took a sip from his glass of wine.
Elena walked towards Grant as her eyes flickered over to Alexander who was standing tall.
"Alexander Blackwood?" Elena whispered into Grant’s ears and he nodded.
Elena’s eyes widened. "Why is he here? And why is he descending from the stairs? And where is Serena?" Panic flooded through her chest as her gaze flickered over to Alexander once again.
She instantly turned her sight away from him when she saw his dark eyes.
"Mr. Blackwood," Elena began with a smile. "What brings you to our humble abode?"
Alexander finally reacted. A smile appeared on his lips but his eyes were dark.
"I came here to solve an injustice." He answered with his voice clear and crisp.
Elena and Grant exchanged glances. The guests stared at each other before turning to Alexander. They had one question in their minds: What was he talking about?
Elena and Grant suddenly had a bad feeling.
Suppressing the fear in her heart, Elena probed. "If I may ask, what injustice would that be?"
Alexander stared straight at Elena as though he wanted to see right through her heart. Elena’s heart rate, on the other hand, raced as she took deep breaths.
"You know what I’m talking about. It would be better if you don’t play dumb." Alexander stated, and with each word he uttered, his voice dropped lower and colder.
Elena chuckled, but her palms had already turned sweaty. Grant didn’t have it better as well. He could sense what Alexander was talking about, and his forehead glistened with sweat.
He only finally realized that he had walked straight into a trap.
"It’s good that you are all present. Now I would love to ask a question." Alexander’s gaze swept through every guest present.
"You were all here when a lady was dragged upstairs, weren’t you? Did any of you step in?" Alexander questioned loudly.
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Grant swallowed. As expected. He was here because of Serena.
None of the guests answered. Instead, they all lowered their heads, unable to reply to his question.
Alexander smiled coldly, but his eyes were empty. "Do you know what happened upstairs."
"This man—" he pointed to Grant who had his head lowered. "—unde the claims of disciplining his daughter with the family rules thrashed her so badly that she was barely breathing when I found her."
The guest gasped loudly as they turned to Grant who wished the earth would open up and swallow him.
Elena bit her lips as she muttered under her breath repeatedly. "It’s all over."
"You claim to be elites, yet you can’t see when something is wrong." Alexander berated them, his veins popping out due to anger.
"Alexander..."
Suddenly, they heard a soft voice from the top of the stairs, and all eyes turned to the source of the voice.
There, they saw Serena being supported by Maya and Mama. Her face was pale, and it looked like she had suffered from severe loss of blood.
Alexander’s expression softened seeing her.
Elena looked at her, and her palms folded into fists. ’Why are you not dead yet? Why do you always have to make things difficult for me?’ She muttered internally while glaring at Serena..
A few seconds later, Serena was standing beside Alexander while being helped by Maya. Mama stood to the side as she shook her head disappointedly at Grant who lowered his head even more.
"Are you okay?" He asked, while rubbing her hair. He didn’t mind that they were in public.
The guests looked at each other. And once again, one question was going on in their mind: What was Serena’s relationship with Alexander Blackwood?
Serena turned to Grant, her eyes glistening as tears gathered in them. "Father, am I really your daughter or am I a charity case?"
Grant snapped his head up. "Hey! Why would you say that?" He retorted.
Serena laughed bitterly. "I don’t think I’m your daughter." She said, while blinking back her tears.
The guests all began to feel pity for her while they threw dirty gazes at Grant and Elena.
"Father, I only wanted one thing from you; don’t hand over my mother’s bakery to Elena. It was her handwork while she was still alive, yet you dealt with me according to the family rules. Tell me, is that fair?" She demanded loudly.
Her chest rose and fell asleep agitation set in. Maya rubbed her back without hesitation while Alexander was at a loss on what to do.
"Serena, I only disciplined you. You’re my daughter and you were being disrespectful to your stepmother. I had to do what a father would do in such a situation."
Alexander scoffed. "Or perhaps, you have been waiting for the right opportunity to punish her."
"If you ask me, I see nothing wrong with her request. She begged you to not hand over her mother bakery to an outsider, and you punished her badly." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
He paused. "You can’t get away with it. My lawyers will be with you soon."
His gaze swept over the remaining guests. "This is a warning. Serena is under me, no one... I repeat, no one is allowed to hurt her. If they try to, then they are going up against me."
Without waiting for anyone’s reply, Alexander scooped Serena into his hands gently and walked away leaving behind stunned expressions.
