Information to Mastery: Points Store System-Chapter 297: Frustration, Betrayal?
Being a mutant does not make someone inhuman. While they end up obtaining incredible abilities that are beyond the scope of a human capabilities, they still act and function like a human would.
And this was the exact reason why, despite being a mutant, James was inside a bar. He was drinking, trying to calm himself down.
Even though it has already been a day since it happened, he just could not forget about it.
Every time that he remembered and thought about it, he felt his entire body trembling, which made him extremely uncomfortable.
So today, even though he had already stopped drinking quite a while back, he had no choice but to do it again. He felt, only by being drunk, would he be able to at least calm his nerves down. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
While drinking, he could not help but think, what could be Michael’s origin? Was he really just an ordinary kid, who had some luck, and got some wealth?
Ever since he left Michael’s villa, he had not gone back to the organization. Of course, nobody knew that he had already failed the task given to him.
But at the end of the day, he would still need to go back and report. But before then, he would have to plan how he was going to deal with the consequences of failing.
First of all, of course, he would have to look for the client. He would have to make sure that that guy paid for the trouble that he had undergone.
Why did he reveal just part of the information, while hiding the other? Or, why was it that he did not investigate clearly, before understanding who it was that they were dealing with?
And the price that he had paid, it was sufficient to be able to mobilize a mutant, but it was not enough to allow a mutant to face such a risk.
He was lucky that he had been able to escape. And, that kid, he probably thought that he had the ability to control his actions.
But until today, ever since he left there, he had been thinking about betraying Michael, but no matter how much he thought about it, nothing had happened to him at all.
Therefore, he believed, this was just a plan that Michael was using to threaten him. It was to ensure that whatever had happened in there was not revealed.
While he was engrossed in drinking while trying to think of a possible explanation of why Michael was a mutant, and there was another mutant around him, and both of them were extremely strong, he did not notice someone approaching.
Despite being a mutant, he just gained an ability of the pressure bullet, not like his other senses were enhanced.
If not for the fact that he was drinking low alcohol content drinks, he would have already been drunk by now, instead of just filling his stomach with liquid.
It was only when someone grabbed his shoulder that James reacted. Initially, he wanted to strike, but when he realized who it was, he managed to stop himself.
It might be true that he had not received any physical enhancement after taking the mutation serum, but before he took the serum, he was already a good fighter.
So, handling normal people was not much of a problem, even if he decided not to depend on his ability.
"Hey, I told you to stop sneaking around. You know, I could have attacked you right now, then who would you have blamed?" James said, addressing the newcomer, his voice tinged with dissatisfaction.
"Don’t worry, if you hurt me, then you will just have to compensate me. But before we reach that point, I’m pretty sure that you don’t have the ability to harm me." The newcomer responded nonchalantly as he sat next to James.
The newcomer was a man with a bald head and brown eyes, had a medium build, with the most striking feature being his elongated nose. It was a little longer than normal.
Currently, he was wearing a black leather jacket on top of a brown t-shirt, matched with a pair of black jeans and white sneakers.
As for James, he was dressed casually, an unbuttoned red-stripped white shirt that revealed the white vest that he was wearing inside, and a pair of black khaki trousers, with black sports shoes.
This bald-headed guy was called Oliver, a friend that James had made after he joined the death shadow organization.
The day that James joined this organization, there were no mutants at that time. At least, Oliver was not one of them.
The two of them formed a friendship, to the extent that when some missions required several people to take them, they would take them together.
And on the day that they were supposed to take the serums, both of them decisively took the chance given to them.
Since both of them had completed numerous tasks, and had made quite a lot of contributions to the organization, they were both given grade A mutation serums.
And after taking them, they were both lucky to be able to survive, and awaken combat-related abilities. James’s ability was pressure bullet, while Oliver’s was acceleration drive.
This ability that Oliver got allowed him to be able to complete more missions as compared to James. After all, this ability that Oliver possessed allowed him to be able to move at an incredible speed within 5 seconds.
Even though the maximum distance that he could cover within those five seconds before the deactivation of the ability was only 300 m, it was very crucial during the assassination missions.
Most of the time, the target would only need to be 10 or 20 meters away, which allowed the assassin to take care of them.
And the ability that Oliver got allowed him to be able to move at incredible speeds in a maximum distance of 300 meters.
This allowed him to be able to attack, and make a run for it, in a situation where the target was heavily protected by bodyguards or other security personnel.
This was something that made James envy him, but that did not diminish the friendship between them.
"So, what did you call me here for? Have you already completed the mission, or are you planning to get it done tomorrow?" While grabbing a bottle of alcohol from the table, Oliver asked.
Bang!
"You won’t believe it, but I actually failed. The information that was provided was completely false. I wasn’t going to deal with an ordinary person, instead, it was a mutant. And not one, but two of them!" James responded in an angry voice, as he slammed the bottle on the table.
Oliver was surprised when he heard this. But then again, he revealed a faint smile as he said, "I told you before. The price that that old guy was willing to pay, it was suspicious. But you never wanted to listen to me.
But, since you are here, I believe that the strength of those mutants is not that high. Did they escape?"
James gave Oliver a death stare, before he finally said, "They escaped? Are you crazy? I am lucky to be here right now. So, you can say that I am the one who escaped."
Oliver was shocked by James’s response, as he looked at him, trying to see if James was joking. But looking at his expression, it seemed that it was serious.
"Are you kidding me? Don’t tell me that you went to attack someone from the silent order syndicate? While we are stronger than the two syndicates, it is not something that one of us can deal with." Oliver asked in a doubtful tone.
"Do you think I have the time to joke? I don’t know what kind of relationship this kid has with the silent order syndicate, but definitely, he is not in good terms with them.
Yesterday, when I went to strike, I found that one of the mutants from the silent order syndicate was there.
And you cannot believe it, I found that he was beaten up, and was even killed in front of my own eyes. And that third in command of the silent order syndicate, he had one of his legs broken.
As for if he was eventually killed or not, I’m not sure, because I left before seeing what fate he ended up suffering.
Simply put, I was the one that was in danger, and could not handle them." James shook his head as he responded.
Oliver was silent for quite a long while, as he took several sips of alcohol from the bottle in his hand.
Finally, he asked, "Then, what really happened? From the way that I see you, it seems that you have not suffered any kind of injury. Did they just let you go? I don’t believe that you have the capability of running away, unless you observed things from a distance."
"Of course, I went there. But, just after I entered, I found that the mutant from the silent order syndicate had already been beaten up. How could I even attempt to attack?
I just came up with an excuse, but it did not work. Then, I attemp- Aaah!" James was giving the details of what had happened, when suddenly, he grabbed his head mid-sentence as he screamed in agony.
At this moment, his eyes widened in disbelief, as the tremendous pain that I was feeling made him remember what Michael had told him. At the same time, questions began appearing in his mind, completely ignoring Oliver who was asking him what was going on.
