Chapter 499: Chapter 498: Anne Davidson is not as simple as you think

Nia Mitchell was alone in the vast Special Assistant Office, staring blankly, overcome with boredom. Indeed, she had nothing to do at the moment.

Suddenly, her cell phone rang.

"Hello?"

Looking at the unfamiliar number, Nia Mitchell frowned.

"Is this Nia Mitchell?"

A voice that was both unfamiliar yet faintly recognizable came from the other end of the line. Nia was momentarily stumped, struggling to place who it could be.

"Yes, it is. Who are you?"

"I’m Belinda Swan."

Belinda Swan sat in a coffee shop, gracefully stirring the coffee in front of her.

"What do you want?"

She frowned, puzzled, unable to comprehend why Belinda Swan would be calling her.

"Nothing too important. I just wanted to ask if you know Anne Davidson?"

Belinda Swan maintained a smile, speaking calmly, her voice conveying gentleness. But all of this was merely a front. Who knew what kind of dreadful soul was hidden behind that angelic face?

"I know her."

Nia Mitchell was quite unfazed. She had heard the name Anne Davidson multiple times. Phoebe Harris had also mentioned Anne Davidson at the ancestral home during the discussions about Evelyn Peary’s marriage. Belinda Swan had been present then too.

"So, do you know the story between Anne and Maxwell?"

Belinda Swan couldn’t understand why Nia Mitchell could be so calm.

"I’m not the least bit interested."

With that, she prepared to hang up.

On the other end of the line, Belinda Swan, in the coffee shop, seemed to anticipate her reaction and abruptly raised her voice.

"Nia Mitchell, you’re scared, aren’t you?" she said quickly, her expression turning fierce. "You’re scared of Anne, aren’t you? Afraid she’ll steal your husband, right? I understand how you feel."

Nia Mitchell looked heavenward, speechless, and sighed.

"Miss Swan, we’re already married. I didn’t even concern myself with your so-called status as his fiancée. Do you really think I’d be concerned about Anne?"

She was stating a fact, but her words pierced Belinda Swan to the core.

The incident involving Anne Davidson that year hadn’t only been instigated by Phoebe Harris; she, Belinda Swan, had also fueled the flames. Maxwell was supposed to marry her; how could she let that little wretch get him? This Nia Mitchell was just momentarily triumphant.

"Anne isn’t as simple as you think. She was once pregnant with Maxwell’s child."

If a man was willing to let a woman carry his child, didn’t that prove her importance to him? Back then, Anne Davidson had been the one most likely to become Mrs. Peary. But even someone like that, she had been capable of defeating. This Nia Mitchell was just a university student who hadn’t even graduated yet; she would be no match for her. The only slight complication was that Nia Mitchell was already Mrs. Peary. But that made no real difference.

"I don’t believe you."

If Anne had truly been pregnant, Uncle Peary would have told her. But she hadn’t considered that whenever Anne’s name came up, Maxwell only ever offered a minimal explanation.

"Whether you believe it or not is your own business," Belinda Swan kept smiling, but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. "I’m just kindly reminding you so that you won’t be caught off guard in the end."

"If you’re trying to drive a wedge between Uncle Peary and me, then you’re seriously underestimating me."

Nia Mitchell angrily retorted before slamming the phone down. She truly couldn’t understand how such people could exist in this world.
