Chronicles Of A Fallen Angel-Chapter 45: First, the ring.
"What is it?"
"A ring. Very old, very powerful, very personal. He stole it from me thirty years ago, and I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to retrieve it."
"And I’m that opportunity?"
"You’re someone I don’t mind risking. If you succeed, you’ve proven your value. If you fail, well..." She shrugged. "It’s no loss to me."
[New Quest Offered: Selene’s Retrieval]
[Objective: Steal ring from rival vampire]
[Reward: Permission to take items from Velvet Room collection]
[Risk: High - Dangerous target, personal stakes for Selene]
[Analysis: This could be the opening you need with Selene]
[Recommendation: Accept, but negotiate terms]
"What are the terms?" I asked.
"You retrieve the ring within one week. In exchange, I’ll grant you access to take one item from my collection room – provided it’s not something I personally value. You’ll also earn my favor, which is worth considerably more than any single artifact."
"And if I fail?"
"Then you’re barred from the Velvet Room permanently. And I’ll make sure every supernatural in the city knows you’re not to be trusted."
High stakes. But also an opportunity.
If I could pull this off, I’d have legitimate access to the collection room. Which meant one of the three retrievals would be easy. And more importantly, I’d have Selene’s favor – a significant step toward eventually getting close enough to corrupt her.
"I’ll need details," I said. "Who’s the vampire, where’s the ring, what defenses am I facing."
"I’ll provide everything you need. But first, I need your agreement."
I considered it. The smart play was to refuse, to stick with the original plan, to not get entangled in Selene’s personal vendettas.
But the smart play wouldn’t get me closer to the power I needed.
"I accept," I said. "One week, I get you the ring."
"Excellent." She extended her hand, and when I shook it, I felt magic seal the agreement. A binding contract, supernatural in nature. "I’ll have the details sent to you tomorrow. Don’t disappoint me, Alexander."
"I won’t."
She left me on the balcony, and I stood there processing what I’d just agreed to.
A job for Selene herself. High risk, high reward. And one step closer to the corruption that might break through my power barrier.
My phone buzzed. Marco.
Marco: Status update?
Me: Scouted the locations. Have the layouts for Elena. But there’s a complication.
Marco: What kind of complication?
Me: The kind where Selene knows we’re planning jobs and made me a counter-offer.
Marco: WHAT?
Me: Calling you in 5. Need to explain in person.
I headed back down to the main floor, my mind already working through the new variables.
I’d come here to scout for thefts. Instead, I’d been recruited by the very person I was planning to steal from.
The game just got infinitely more complex.
And if I played this right, I’d end up with everything I needed – the retrievals completed, Selene’s trust earned, and a path forward to the power that would keep me alive when the Covenant came calling.
All I had to do was steal from a vampire powerful enough to rival Selene, survive whatever defenses he had, and return the ring within a week.

Back at the safehouse, I filled Marco in on everything. His expression grew progressively more stressed as I talked.
"So let me get this straight," he said when I finished. "Selene knows you’re a thief. She knows you were scouting her space. And instead of killing you or banning you, she gave you a job?"
"Essentially, yes."
"And if you complete this job, she’ll let you take something from the collection room?"
"One item. That’s the deal."
"Which solves one of our three retrieval jobs." He rubbed his face. "This is insane. But also... brilliant? I can’t tell if you’re a genius or if you just have incredible luck."
"Bit of both, I’d asume."
Elena had been listening quietly. Now she spoke up. "What do we know about the target vampire?"
"Nothing yet. Selene’s sending details tomorrow."
"This could be a trap," Sarah said. "She could be sending you into a situation designed to get you killed."
"Possible," I admitted. "But I don’t think so. She seemed genuinely invested in getting this ring back."
"Famous last words," Viktor rumbled from his corner.
"Do we have a choice?" I asked Marco. "The clients are getting impatient, we need to complete these jobs, and this gives us a legitimate way to access one of the locations."
"No, we don’t have a choice. We’re committed now." Marco stood. "Fine. We proceed. But we do this smart. Wait for the details on the target, plan thoroughly, and for god’s sake, don’t do anything to make Selene more suspicious than she already is."
"Understood."
I retreated to my room, exhausted from the constant maneuvering.
[Status Update]
[Power Level: 2% - LOCKED]
[Fragments: 191.2/1000]
[New Quest: Selene’s Retrieval]
[Timeline: 7 days]
[Stakes: Access to collection room, Selene’s favor, reputation]
[Current Threats:]
[- The Covenant: Watching]
[- Sebastian Thorne: Hostile]
[- Selene Blackwater: Suspicious but offering opportunity]
[- Unknown target vampire: Details pending]
[Analysis: Danger increasing, but so are opportunities]
[Recommendation: Complete Selene’s job, use the access to advance toward corruption]
[Long-term goal: Break 2% barrier through high-value corruption]
I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling.
I had to steal from a dangerous vampire. Then use that success to get closer to Selene. Then somehow, eventually, seduce and corrupt a five-hundred-year-old predator who’d survived longer than most civilizations.
All while avoiding the Covenant, managing Sebastian’s vendetta, and keeping my true nature secret.
The path forward was clear.
It was also potentially suicidal.
But I’d fallen from Heaven, crashed to Earth broken and powerless, and clawed my way back to something resembling strength.
I wasn’t going to stop now.
Selene was the key. The power I needed, the breakthrough that would push me past this barrier.
I just had to figure out how to claim her without getting myself killed in the process.
One problem at a time.
First, the ring.
Then, everything else.
