Living Only For Myself: Make Those Who Hate Me Regret It-Chapter 184: "Make Yourself Clear.
Xu Su’s sobs came to a sudden halt, a chill creeping into her heart. "Does being rich mean you can just kill people with impunity? Shen Chen, this is a society governed by law. Murder is illegal."
Shen Chen scoffed. "You think it’s hard to make someone disappear without a trace? Xu Su, if you’re really that naive, why are you so afraid of Brother Zhou finding out you got a boyfriend behind his back?"
His words left Xu Su speechless. How could she not know how ruthless Zhou Mochen could be?
In her past life, she had been by Zhou Mochen’s side for so long. She’d seen how many of his business rivals he had driven to bankruptcy overnight, some of whom ended up jumping to their deaths.
’Were all his methods really aboveboard?’
’Impossible... At his core, Zhou Mochen wasn’t a man with a strong moral compass.’
Seeing that she had finally stopped crying, Shen Chen’s tone softened. He steered off the highway with one hand while pulling out a tissue with the other and handing it to her. "Here, wipe your face. Who cries like this after putting on makeup? You’re a mess."
Xu Su flipped down the vanity mirror. The girl in the reflection’s eyes were swollen from crying. The cheap mascara and eyeliner had been slowly washed away by her tears, leaving blackish-gray tracks down her face.
’Definitely a mess...’
The tip of her nose was also bright red, making her look utterly pitiful.
Xu Su didn’t take his tissue. Instead, she pulled out two of her own, gave her face a rough wipe, then took out two more clean ones and scrubbed viciously at her lips.
Shen Chen didn’t get angry at her actions. He tilted his head to glance at her, a smirk playing on his lips. "What, you can’t stand me kissing you that much? Did you not enjoy it?"
Xu Su despised that look on his face. The thought that he had kissed her right in front of Xi Zirong, all while claiming it was to help her break up, made her seethe with a frustration she couldn’t dispel.
"What gives you the confidence to think I enjoyed it? Shen Chen, I was utterly disgusted, you know that?"
Xu Su had regained her composure by now. She deliberately mimicked his smirk and retorted, "Who knows what kind of disgusting things that mouth of yours has kissed."
Her words were vicious, like an ice pick stabbing straight into Shen Chen’s heart. His expression changed dramatically, his face twisting for an instant.
A screech of brakes echoed. Xu Su’s body lurched forward, only to be snapped back by the seatbelt. The next thing she knew, her vision went dark as Shen Chen yanked her toward him.
"You seem to know so much, Xu Su. Go on, tell me. What do you think of me? What kind of disgusting things could I have possibly kissed?"
Shen Chen gripped the nape of her neck, forcing her to face him.
The man’s jaw was clenched tight, his words practically ground out through his teeth. "Make yourself clear."
Their noses were less than an inch apart, their breaths mingling as their gazes locked.
Shen Chen was deliberately controlling his strength and hadn’t been too rough, but his sudden movement still tugged at Xu Su’s wound. Unwilling to show weakness, she stifled the cry of pain that threatened to escape.
Her red, swollen eyes glared at him defiantly.
The girl’s tear-streaked face was truly a pitiful sight. Shen Chen felt the rage that had filled his chest rapidly dissipating.
’Why am I getting so worked up over a girl?’ The strength in his hand loosened, and his tone softened unconsciously. "Did I pull your wound?"
Xu Su turned her head away, putting some distance between them. "I don’t care if you really only kissed me to ’help me break up’ or if there was some other reason. Shen Chen, let me be clear: I didn’t like it, and I don’t want it to happen a second time."
The car was silent for several minutes, and Shen Chen didn’t say a word.
He stared at the wary girl beside him, then suddenly laughed. "What other reason could there be? Xu, a kiss is nothing to me. You’re the one who asked me to teach you how to break up, remember?"
"Relax, I’m not interested in you." Shen Chen restarted the car and said slowly, "I can have any woman I want. Why would I need to covet one of my brother’s girls? Xu Su, don’t be so full of yourself."
His words were dripping with sarcasm, but Xu Su wasn’t the least bit angry.
In fact, the anxiety that had gripped her ever since he’d grabbed her at the hotel finally began to ease. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
’That’s right. Who is Shen Chen? Why would he be interested in me? In her last life, he was always surrounded by beauties of every type, swapping them out one after another like a revolving door.’
After playing the field for years, he probably got tired of it and finally threw himself into his career. It became rare to see him with a woman at any gathering.
Xu Su wasn’t one for blind confidence, but many of Shen Chen’s actions today had been so unusual that she couldn’t help but suspect he had other motives.
Now, hearing his words, she let out a visible sigh of relief.
In any case, Xu Su truly wanted no romantic entanglements with Shen Chen.
’As for that kiss... I’ll just chalk it up to being bitten by a dog.’
While she was feeling relieved, Shen Chen saw her visibly relax, and the smile on his lips slowly vanished.
Unwilling to be misjudged, Shen Chen spoke up again. "And stop making nasty assumptions about me. I haven’t kissed any ’disgusting things.’"
His tone was slightly mocking. "You seem to know a lot for someone so young."
"..." He kept harping on about it, which showed he clearly cared. Xu Su started to feel a little embarrassed.
She had only said it offhandedly to get a rise out of him; she didn’t realize she’d be stepping on a landmine.
In her peripheral vision, she caught sight of the bruise on his arm—an injury he’d gotten fighting for her...
A rare pang of guilt hit Xu Su, and she reluctantly placated him. "Alright, alright, I get it."
Her perfunctory tone made Shen Chen laugh with exasperation. He was about to say something else when a phone began to vibrate inside the car.
It was Xu Su’s phone. She’d tossed it aside when she got in, and now it had fallen into some crevice. Hearing the vibration, she started fumbling around for it.
Driving with one hand, Shen Chen glanced at her searching everywhere and sighed in resignation. He pointed to a gap to her right. "Check there. It should be over there."
His tone was as sharp as ever. "Are you deaf? Can’t you tell where the sound is coming from?"
Xu Su shot him a sideways glance but followed his direction and found the phone. For once, she didn’t snap back.
The phone had been ringing for a while and now showed a missed call.
Just as she unlocked the screen, it started ringing again.
Shen Chen deliberately craned his neck for a look and chuckled. "Crazy Zhou? Does Brother Zhou know that’s his contact name?"
"..." Xu Su flushed with embarrassment. Ignoring him, she answered the call and put the phone to her ear.
A second later, a familiar voice came through the phone.
"Susu, are you back in Chang City yet?"
Zhou Mochen’s voice was deep and melodic, laced with unconcealed affection.
Xu Su suddenly felt a sting in her nose. She sniffled quietly. "I’m back. We just got off the highway."
Her sniffle was too quiet for Zhou Mochen to hear, but he sounded puzzled. "Why are you coming off the highway?"
The bus always takes the national roads for the convenience of its passengers.
Then, a thought seemed to strike him. "Did you come back in Shen Chen’s car? He mentioned this morning that he was bored and might go to Kang County to find you. He really went?"
