Chapter 88 - Voice Mails and Messages

Katherine sat on the couch for a long time, her heart pounding so hard that she could literally hear it in her ears. After some while, she stood up to check the kids and saw they had sprawled on the bed, sleeping. She smiled a little and positioned them gingerly on the bed.

She patted their cheeks softly, removing the hair from Jasmine’s face—they’d soon wake up for dinner.

Katherine went to the couch where her phone was, and her fingers hovered over the call button to call him. To hear his voice and confirm everything from him, but she hesitated. What would she say?

How would she sound? Happy? Shocked? Or detached?

This is complicated, she ran her hand through her hair and dropped the phone on the couch.

She wasn’t ready yet. She didn’t know what to expect. But now she was the one who left Aaron due to Amanda’s scheme, but would Aaron want her back?

Katherine was pulled out when the front door rang, and she jolted up, rubbing her forehead to ease the headache that wanted to creep in. Her brow creased immediately, thinking Mathew was back because he said he’d come back. And Katherine rubbed her shoulder, feeling that she’d been taking advantage of Mathew these days—she should take him out as appreciation for everything after all these messed up days.

Katherine strode to the smart door view and pressed the button only to see Aaron. Her breath hitched as she blinked to check if it wasn’t her eyes playing a prank on her.

She licked her lower lips, her hands on the door knob before dropping it as she fiddled with her fingers.

"Katherine..." his voice slurred out as he wobbled, and Katherine could feel her heart skip, worried that he’d injured himself.

She wanted to rush out but stopped when she saw another hand stabilizing him on his feet.

"Boss, keep your cool," the new voice stated, and Katherine furrowed her brow in confusion. Who was that? Because the person’s face didn’t reveal through the camera.

"Shhh!" Aaron placed his index finger on his lips, shushing the person. "I’m talking to my Katherine," he mumbled, his face dropping on the door.

"Yeah—yeah, I know, boss," the voice said sarcastically, "But our goddess won’t like this."

"Shhh, not our goddess," Aaron cautioned, his brow furrowed yet his eyes were drooping. "She’s my goddess. My Katherine."

"Okay," the person patted Aaron’s shoulder.

Katherine watched the scene and felt a smile pull at her lips despite the complicated feeling she had.

"You, go away," he pushed the person away. "I want to talk to Katheri—"

"What are you doing here?" Katherine asked, interrupting his words. Aaron was drunk and he was here outside her door.

"Bab—" he stopped, slapping his cheeks. "She said not to call her baby," he mumbled like he was cautioning himself. "Katherine, I’m sorry, eh?" he said.

"Okay," Katherine muttered slowly, tilting her head a little to see his face clearly. Aaron’s hair was messy like it hadn’t been brushed for three days, the rim of his eyes were red and black from bags, and his cheeks had a white plaster, and she gulped.

He looked miserable, and her heart turned in anguish like someone was twisting a knife in her heart.

"I’m sorry, I never touched Amanda, I never touched another person aside from you, years ago and now," he said softly. "I’ve been yours and only yours since all these years, I never—" he choked on tears as he sniffed. "I swear I never looked at anyone else because you are irreplaceable, you are my heart, my love, my soul, and my everything. Years ago without you was hell, nightmarish, horrible pain. And I don’t want to experience that again without you," he said. "All these years without you, I was like a machine without a motor and a body without a soul."

Katherine sucked in a sharp breath, gripping the side of her door tightly as she felt her shoulders shaking with tears.

"Please don’t leave me, don’t shut me out, don’t push me away. It hurts," he patted his chest. "It hurts so much without you."

Katherine placed her palm on her mouth to stop any sound from coming from her mouth, sobs wanted to escape as her head dropped.

"Please don’t deny me, don’t punish me for my past mistake, don’t—" he trailed off, looking at the camera if it’s still on. "Please don’t let me go like I did that day."

Katherine harshly wiped her cheeks. She couldn’t stop the tears streaming down her eyes.

"I’ve done what I should have done since the moment I saw you again, I’ve broken everything off with Amanda, I don’t have anything to do with her." Aaron raised his hands and slammed them on the door. "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Katherine. For all the tears, for all the pain, for everything." He slammed his hands again.

"Boss, calm down," the voice said, pulling Aaron.

"No, let me beg, if Katherine does—" he wanted to hit the wall again, and then the man revealed himself and gave a sheepish smile. And in a swift motion, he hit Aaron at the back of his neck, and he slumped on his arm.

"Whoops, the boss is drunk!" he groaned, "You’ll regret this if you remember tomorrow morning," he mumbled, then turned to look at the camera. "Goddess, I’m sorry for this. Boss doesn’t always behave like this. But boss is sincere, please do have it in your heart to hear him out." And like that, he pulled Aaron’s slumped body away.

Katherine fell on her ass as she grabbed her chest, feeling her heart wanted to burst from emotion, clutching her chest tightly as it was hard to breathe, the air was constricted as she heaved, trying to catch her breath but it was hard.

Aaron.

Her Aaron looked so miserable. She never seen him like that. And it broke her heart all over again.

Yet seeing him, she couldn’t ask what she wanted to ask, yet she stood there watching him display his spiral emotion like a coward she was. Like a coward, she wanted to run away and hide—

Katherine crawled to where her phone was. She couldn’t walk because there was no energy in her legs. Her fingers trembled as she clicked on the messages and voice mail from Aaron.

And each time she played them and read the messages, she choked on tears.

I’m sorry baby, don’t be angry.

I’m sorry baby, I only have one woman in my life and it’s you.

Hello Katherine, please take me back.

Hello Katherine, it’s me Aaron. Please don’t leave me. Please talk to me, please please. Please.

I’m so sorry, I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do to get you to talk to me. If you want me to disappear, I will but I can’t. Because I’m a shell without you. I can’t. I can’t I love you so much.

I love you so much six years ago and I love you now till forever.

Please baby, hear me out.

I’m so sorry the last thing I wanted was to hurt you again.

I just got you back Katherine, I can’t lose you again.

Baby... Katherine... My love... My woman... Please say something, please talk to me.

I’ll make it right, I’ll do everything in my power but I won’t lose you.

Katherine you are mine! Mine 6 years ago and mine now!

You know what, I won’t disturb you anymore I’ll give you space.

No, I can’t give you space! Never! The space I took then made all these mess.

Katherine’s body shook, gripping her phone tightly through the blurry eyes, reading and listening, each moving from sad, angry to apologetic as her heart wrenched painfully.

Her Aaron.

Her man.

Aaron—her Aaron, she scrolled through the messages, her hand hovered on his contact but stopped again. What would she tell him now.

I’m sorry for doubting you? Yet you still did when you know Aaron only had eyes for you even during teen and college days.

How are you? —You are asking this? So hypocritical.

Are you okay? —Did he look okay? The man was literally crying at your front door minutes ago and from the voice mail and messages, did he? You broke him, Kathy.

The snarky replies to all her questions from the void.

What can I do? You are asking? Aren’t you the one that didn’t want to listen to him? Aren’t you the one that was avoiding him? Aren’t you the one that keeps running away?

Stop it! Katherine screamed, throwing her hands in the air before she grabbed her hair.

The truth is bitter as usual, a scoff and that snarky comment retracted back to the void.

Katherine cried, her body rocking from tears. I’m sorry, she whispered in her hands like a prayer. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Please want me back, please don’t leave me, please. I’m sorry. I still love you Aaron despite all the years, I love you too.
