Chapter 559: Chapter 559: The First Citywide Sweep

The flash of light behind the building flickered again as Chu Miao and Chu Hao stepped onto the expanded veranda.

The restriction barrier shimmered softly around the area as they stepped into it preventing accidental activation.

The teleportation arrays glowed faintly beneath their feet, spiritual lines embedded into the concrete glowing like veins under the skin.

A small group was already gathered at the side. Combat team members were busy making final preparations before stepping into the array. Some were fastening gloves, or tightening boots, while others were adjusting weapons.

Some carried cold weapons; others had awakened abilities flickering faintly around their bodies.

Yang Leo stood to the side, holding a ledger.

"Names have been registered. Teams have been assigned and flares distributed," he reported when he saw Chu Miao approaching. "Six-hour shifts for array guards have been arranged as well."

Chu Miao nodded in approval. "That’s good. Remember, if a flare is fired, response must be immediate. No hesitation." She ordered authoritatively.

"Yes, Sect Master." Various voices acknowledged her command.

She then turned to Chu Hao, "Ready?" She asked with a smile.

Chu Hao snorted slightly, "I was born ready."

The two stepped toward the central teleportation array. Spiritual energy surged beneath their feet.

"Destination?" Yang Leo stepped forward to personally operate the array for them.

"Let’s go to the East Sector; the old commercial district. From the reports sent back by our scouts, large numbers of zombies were recorded there yesterday." Chu Miao instructed.

Yang Leo swallowed hard remembering the staggering numbers he had seen in the records. But, he stilled himself and nodded before activating the array.

He had known Chu Miao long enough to know that she wouldn’t change her mind even if she was running to danger head on.

Light flashed from the bottom of their feet and both Chu Miao and Chu Hao disappeared.

When the world solidified again, biting wind greeted them. The icicles were still raining down from the sky like spears, smashing into asphalt and concrete and causing cracks to form.

The air was white with frost, and the temperatures had dropped to a terrifying -80°.

Without spiritual energy, even Chu Miao would have found it difficult to survive.

They had arrived in the middle of an intersection and every direction they looked, zombies filled the streets.

Some stood unnaturally still at first, gray faces lifted toward the sky as icicles pierced some of them clean through. Yet the impaled ones did not fall. Others were wandering around aimlessly without a goal.

Until, Chu Miao and Chu Hao appeared. Every head snapped toward them at once.

Chu Hao exhaled slowly, "Well, that’s welcoming I guess." He muttered under his breath.

Roars erupted from within the zombies and the horde surged forward.

"Just shut up and kill these monstrosities." Chu Miao reprimanded with a teasing laugh as water began spiraling around her.

Even without activating her spiritual energy, the crystal inside her dantian seemed to respond on its own and began preparing for a counteract.

She was finding this inheritance intriguing with every evolution.

"Stay behind me for three breaths." She ordered Chu Hao who scoffed but still obeyed.

The guy would never say no to his sister.

Chu Miao raised one hand and a ring of water exploded outward turning into thousands of small sharp blades that swept through the front ranks like a tidal guillotine.

Wherever those blades passed, heads rolled and limbs were severed. Black blood froze mid-air before shattering into crystal shards under the extreme cold.

Chu Hao whistled in a teasing manner.

"Three elements really do make you unreasonable, little sister."

Chu Miao was used to her brother’s antics. She ignored him and launched another attack.

This time, Chu Hao joined the battle as well.

He had the wind element and since there was so much ice around them, he just needed to use a little spiritual energy to control them instead of making his own weapons from spiritual power.

Just as the battle was getting intense, the zombies paused, then parted, leaving a narrow path between them.

"Well, I know they can strategize now but that’s new." Chu Miao commented when she noticed the peculiar behavior of the zombies.

From the gap walked something different.

Its skin was darkened, muscles tightened under gray flesh. Its eyes were not blank white, but faintly red. Frost did not cling to its body. And its flesh wasn’t rotting and falling. It was more human than zombie.

No.

Three of them walked out, not just one. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Behind them, the horde remained silent and disciplined, as if waiting. Waiting for orders or commands.

Chu Hao’s joking expression faded.

"They can communicate and coordinate." He said solemnly.

The middle evolved zombie tilted its head slightly, as if studying them. Then, it raised one arm and the previously scattered zombies split into flanking formations as if setting up an ambush.

"These things are getting dangerous. It seems they have learned." Chu Miao commented as she observed the formations.

"But how is this possible? They are mindless monsters. How could they learn?" Chu Hao asked curiously as he looked at his sister.

"Maybe it isn’t more of learning but remembering. It is possible that some of the zombies have recovered some of their memories when they were humans and are using that knowledge." Chu Miao analyzed and felt that she must be right.

"Then we need to speed up our plans or we will be in trouble if all the zombies awaken their memories." Chu Hao replied and responded with an attack to the zombie that had just lunged at them.

The first evolved zombie moved faster than expected, dodging falling icicles effortlessly.

Chu Hao met it head-on, controlling his wind element bursting from his palms. The clash cracked the air like thunder.

Meanwhile, the other two evolved zombies flanked Chu Miao from opposite sides. It was as if they could tell she was the stronger enemy.

Water surged again, but this time she layered it with light spiritual energy to cleanse those zombies of their virus.
