Inside a crystal-clear, glass bottle there was a red liquid, not the fresh red or dark red of blood, but a flaming orange-red one. Even when set steadily on the ground, the orange-red liquid continued to ripple slightly, and even those, who knew no magic, could clearly feel the destructive power brewed within.
Vivian’s face wore an innocent, pure smile. She gently pointed her finger at the red glass bottle. Suddenly, the liquid in the bottle started to glow. As if an invisible hand held the bottle, it slowly rose in the air, and floated towards the Terror Beast, trapped amidst four large stones.
"Say goodbye to the world." Vivian waved at the pile of rocks and made a farewell gesture. The orange-red glass bottle, no longer supported by magical hand, fell quickly due to gravity. Even though it was soon obstructed by protruding rocks and disappeared from sight. The crisp sound of the breaking glass bottle was still clearly audible.
With a loud "boom", a huge Pillar of Fire soared to the sky. The explosion’s energy was initially supposed to spread quickly, but the encirclement of the four rocks prevented the energy from dissipating. As a result, the energy had to keep compressing inside, then gush out from the only vent above. Along with the spouted fire column, a lot of charred chunks of bodies flew out, and a pungent burnt smell filled the air.
The giant pillar of fire lasted for about thirty seconds before it abruptly vanished. After the fire column disappeared, Lina lightly tapped the ground, causing a slight tremor. The protruding rocks vibrated and sank back into the ground, leaving no trace. Only the dried leaves burnt to ashes and the charred corpse of the magical beast were left on the ground.
"That’s four." Dora looked around, "Strange, considering the cunning of the Terror Beasts, the other four hiding would have certainly ambushed us. Why haven’t they?"
"Don’t worry about them." Catherine stuck her single-handed sword into the ground, stared at the surrounding bushes, and took out a cloth to gently wipe away the acid and flesh smeared on her shield. "No creature will be able to ambush us now. You can fight with peace of mind."
"Because of Pannis?" Dora asked somewhat surprised, "You trust a Silver Rank professional’s strength that much? Remember, there are at least two Gold Rank opponents, one of which is a fully grown Terror Beast."
Catherine smiled, ignoring Dora’s question. She threw the cloth, which had begun to corrode, on one side and picked up the longsword again. "One big, one small – two Gold Rank Terror Beasts. Do we want to make the first move and see who achieves first?"
"A competition? Sure." Lina’s spellbook in her left hand didn’t flip again after she finished earth goddess’s terrain-changing magic. As she read the spell in a whisper, her right pointer finger traced complex figures in the air. Per Catherine’s request, she shrugged and took two steps to the side. Her right finger pointed in Catherine’s direction. From there, half of the Terror Beast’s leg was emerging behind a tree.
To a spellcaster, having sensory detection of their opponent gives them a spellcasting target, allowing them to release magic towards this direction. Of course, most magic will be obstructed by intervening barriers. But if any portion of the body is revealed, as long as it’s within the spell’s effective range, the magic will accurately fly in that direction without any deviation unless the target actively evades it.
"Oracle, Coagulate the Blood." Lina whispered, releasing the second Divine Death Spell she had learned since accepting Goddess of Understanding’s Divine Duty – the Blood Coagulation Curse.
The Blood Coagulation Curse, the exclusive spell of the Priest of a Deity Death System, is one of the deadly spells with strong power. It has the terrifying effect of completely coagulating the blood in the target’s body within a few seconds. The spell, still with various restrictions, remains popular among the priests of Deity Death System because of its strong lethal effect. Unfortunately, this spell requires a long preparation and chanting time and is often unsuitable for intense offensive and defensive changes on the battlefield.
"Sorry, Sister." As Lina’s Blood Coagulation Curse was released, dark energy lines stretched out from her fingertips onto the Terror Beast’s exposed leg. She turned to Catherine with an apologetic smile. "I won."
Under the exposure of the energy line, the Beast hidden behind the tree shuddered. The exterior of its body began to turn bluish-purple. It convulsed rhythmically, and its chest heaved violently. In a few seconds, the body of this nearly two-meter tall, fully grown Terror Beast had rigidly fallen, still as a trunk, onto the ground, ceasing to breathe.
"You’re too cunning." Catherine glared at Lina, very dissatisfied, "This is cheating." frёeωebɳovel.com
"Is it?" Lina blinked, looking innocently at Catherine, "I didn’t cheat."
Catherine huffed, "Pretending to be stupid won’t help."
"Alright, alright. But if what I did counts as cheating," Lina’s eyes darted. She pointed her lips towards something with a wicked smile, "What would you call what’s happening over there?"
"What’s over where?" Catherine looked back, puzzled, just to see Dora sneakily whip her long whip around a tree. It, skillfully, coiled seven or eight times around another Gold Rank Beast. Seeing Catherine’s gaze, Dora stuck out her tongue, put more strength into her hands to pull back the whip, and said with a smile on her face, "Ah, sister, the weather’s lovely today, isn’t it? Hahaha."
Dora’s black whip is a very unique weapon. Rather than being a whip, it could be better described as a flattened strap. Every so often along the strap, a piece of sharp metal, strong and sturdy, was adhered to it. When the strap shrank in width, all the metal sword blades would merge to the center, ultimately transforming into a hollow yet sturdy one-handed sword, and when the strap extended, it would return to its whip form, blades on both sides.
The whip wrapped around the Terror Beast, the sword blades on the whip cutting deep into its body and causing a gush of fresh blood to flow from the wounds. The panicked beast instinctively struggled in the opposite direction, causing the blades in its body to sink deeper and deeper. It didn’t struggle for too long before it suddenly stopped moving. A fountain of fresh blood spurted out from its neck, draining all of its strength. The beast stumbled backward along the direction of the whip, convulsing as it slowly fell to the ground.
"Ah, senior." Dora retracted her whip like a thief, hiding it behind her back. She put on an obsequious smile and said to Catherine, "What did you just say? Misconduct? Who perpetrated misconduct? We cannot tolerate such behavior."
"Really? Hehehehehe." The look in Catherine’s eyes danced while a rigid smile emerged on her face. She slowly reached up to her neck, giving the impression that she was going to remove her pendant.
"Wait, senior, don’t act rashly." Dora swallowed hard, frantically waving both hands. "Don’t do anything rash, let’s settle this with words, we can’t wake up the adorable kid asleep inside."
"You two scumbags." Catherine spat in defeat and said annoyedly, "There should only be two Silver Rank cubs left."
"That should be the case." Lina set aside her smile and nodded, "But I can’t sense them."
"Me neither." Dora agreed, "They disappeared from my perception a few minutes ago, did they run away?"
"Pannis." Catherine’s voice suddenly grew louder as she called out, "Where have you hidden those two?"
"Crack, crack." An eerie noise suddenly came from the branches above the girls’ heads. Looking up, they saw Pannis seated on a tall branch several meters above the ground. He was lazily swinging his legs, holding a pasfruit in each hand and biting into them in turns.
Dora jumped back a step with a shocked expression and looked up, "When did you come back? How did you appear?"
"Hmm, probably around the time Catherine was talking about the competition. As for how I appeared?" Pannis scratched his head with his pinky, helplessly saying, "I just walked over, climbed up the tree, sat down, and that’s how I appeared."
Despite knowing Pannis was dodging the question, Dora yearned to grasp his neck and interrogate him on how he managed to appear within a close distance without being detected. But following the rules of professionals, she wisely didn’t press the matter. Catherine didn’t provide her an opportunity to inquire further, instead she called out, "Hey, Pannis, where have you hidden those two Terror Beasts? We are still in the middle of a competition."
"They...hm, let me think." Pannis gnawed at the pasfruit, then replied vaguely with his mouth full, "I remember now, they were tired, so they’re sleeping. But you can shout as loud as you want, they’re in a deep sleep, you won’t wake them up."
"Alright, I understand." Catherine sighed, "Come down and lead us to the mercenaries’ bodies."
"It’s so high, I dare not jump." Pannis looked at the height below with a worried and troubled expression, "Who’s going to catch me?"
"Catch you? Haha." Catherine unsheathed her one-handed sword slowly and raised it up right under Pannis, "I’ll catch you. Jump."
"Uh, uh." Pannis threw away the fruit pits in his hands and said laughing, "I suddenly don’t think it’s that high. I can totally get down by myself."
"Then get down quickly." Catherine shouted angrily, "We need to get on the road soon."
"As you command, Captain." Pannis swayed a little, causing the tree top to shake. Using the tree’s momentum, Pannis flickered and disappeared among the yellow leaves on top of the tree. In a flash, he reappeared from behind a large tree, "Let’s go, to the carriage. I’ll take you to see the bodies."
"Looking at bodies is not interesting, I want to conduct experiments." Vivian put away the four bottles that she hadn’t used. As her fingers brushed past the mouth of the bottles, the liquid inside rapidly lost activity, returning to its initial stable state. She put the bottles back into her pocket, patted the blue overalls she was wearing, and prepared to climb up the wagon. However, halfway up, she suddenly fell off the wagon without any warning, she collapsed onto the ground without making any movement.
