Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 860 - 850: Picking a Quarrel
Chapter 860: Chapter 850: Picking a Quarrel
After several people finished breakfast, they drove back to Taoshu Village.
Although it was early in the morning, the sound of the jeep still startled many of the villagers. By the time the car stopped in front of the old house, many children and villagers had gathered around.
"Wow, it’s Hongjun coming back! It’s quite something; they even came back in a car."
"This must be for the funeral, Hongjun, my condolences."
"Yes, Hongjun, take it easy. Your dad lying on the kang bed was suffering; now that he’s gone, he’s finally free."
"Hey, Hongjun, is this your car? Did you guys drive back from Z Province? It must have been all night, right?"
"I just saw your sister-in-law was driving the car; she’s really amazing."
"Hey, isn’t that Goudan? You haven’t come back for years, have you?"
"I heard from your mother a while back that you got married outside, this must be your wife, huh?"
"She’s really pretty, well done!"
A crowd of people buzzed around like flies, and as much as Li Hongjun wanted to lash out in anger, he couldn’t. He had to step forward and shout, "Fellow villagers, thank you all for looking after my father and my elder brother during this period. We’ve just returned to see my father for the last time and send him off on his final journey. We’ll have a chance to chat later."
After saying a few words to some of the older villagers, Li Hongjun knocked on the courtyard gate of the old house.
At this time, the courtyard gate was locked, but with such a commotion outside, anyone inside should have heard. The fact that the door hadn’t been opened suggested it was intentional.
"Who is it?" A woman’s voice came from inside.
Without a doubt, it was Zheng Family’s mother’s voice.
The door creaked open from the inside.
"Oh, isn’t this the second young master of the Li Family? Haven’t you gone to the wrong place? This house is now in Li Hongqi’s name, and no one else should even think about stepping inside." Zheng Family’s mother was doing this on purpose. She still held a grudge over how this couple had kicked her and her daughter out before, and now it was her turn to be in charge.
As for whether the villagers would overhear what she said, it didn’t matter to her. She wasn’t originally from Taoshu Village, and besides, her son-in-law had said that after a while, he would take the two of them out to make a living elsewhere. They wouldn’t have to suffocate in this Godforsaken place, so she felt even bolder.
Li Hongjun glanced at her; honestly, all this was unnecessary. Then, with a broad sweep of his arm, he pushed through the crowd and walked into the courtyard.
"Hey, what are you doing? Someone help! There’s a home invasion happening here." Zheng Family’s mother chased after him, shouting.
Shen Yunfang instructed Goudan and his wife from behind, "You take Pangpang and Manman back home first. There’s probably going to be a scene here, and since you are the younger generation, you’d better not come over here."
After watching Goudan lead the children away, she then followed into the courtyard.
The courtyard gate wasn’t closed, and the villagers who had been watching the car outside all crowded in out of curiosity.
Once inside the courtyard, they could hear Zheng Family’s mother’s shrill scolding coming from the house.
"You thieving robber, are you even a soldier, I’ll peel off your skin."
Shen Yunfang took a few steps and entered the room, then saw two people sitting on the kang bed, with Li Hongjun standing on the floor being pounced on repeatedly by the Zheng matriarch.
Presumably knowing that Li Hongjun was a soldier, even if the Zheng mother hit him, he wouldn’t dare to retaliate.
"Oh, looks like you’ve forgotten about me, Granny. Let me jog your memory." How could Shen Yunfang stand by and watch her own man being bullied, she went up and without any niceties, let fly a kick, sending the Zheng mother sprawling to the side of the kang.
"Mom, Mom, how are you, it’s murder, someone come help!" Zheng Huilan could no longer sit on the kang, she lunged onto her mother’s body, then started to wail heartrendingly.
Li Hongqi, however, remained calm, observing the couple with a pair of gloomy little eyes.
"Hmph, that’s because there’s the edge of the kang to save you, otherwise, I could have kicked you into the vegetable patch, believe it or not." Shen Yunfang, still not appeased, said to the Zheng mother and daughter in a soft, gentle voice.
"Sister-in-law, you’re too arrogant, now that you’ve injured my mother-in-law, do you think you’ll get away with it without any trouble?" Li Hongqi finally spoke.
"What, you want to call the police to arrest me?" Shen Yunfang raised an eyebrow and asked.
Li Hongqi also raised his eyebrows, but didn’t say yes or no, although the threat was loud and clear.
"Haha, I might not have much else, but I do have money. As long as no one’s dead, I can cover the medical expenses. Or you can try me." Shen Yunfang was not afraid at all.
Back then, the legal system was not well-developed, and even in later times, the police would usually focus on mediating domestic family dramas like this, sort of smoothing things over. As long as no one died, at most you’d compensate with the medical expenses.
Li Hongqi squinted his eyes, seemingly weighing his own fighting ability and that of his sister-in-law, but in the end, he backed off.
"Brother, what are you trying to do? Our father isn’t even buried yet, and as soon as you come back, you start with the fighting and killing, what are you doing?" Li Hongqi shifted targets and started stirring up trouble with his elder brother.
"I want to ask you what you are doing. You can throw out your own father, yet treat your mother-in-law as if she’s a goddess. How can you still bear the Li surname, do you deserve it? I think you might as well change your surname to Zheng," Wang Dan’s voice came from the doorway.
Goudan had taken the children back to his parents’ house, and Wang Dan and Li Hongxing were dressing to come out and see what was going on. They had heard some of the commotion outside and understood when they saw their children and daughter-in-law entering with the kids from the second brother’s family — the second brother’s family had returned.
Although they didn’t know how they had come back so quickly, when they heard that the couple had gone to the old house, they also hurried over. Outside the house, they heard Li Hongqi talking nonsense, and Wang Dan couldn’t help but push the door open and choke back a response.
"Sister-in-law, why have you come over?" Shen Yunfang was very happy to see Wang Dan, knowing that her sister-in-law was skilled at cursing people out in the village.
"How could I not come? You all are civilized people, you can’t show a good face to such scumbags," Wang Dan stood as if she was the unyielding guardian of a pass.
In Taoshu Village, there really weren’t many who could stand up to her in a war of words.
"Sister-in-law, you should speak with some conscience. Since we’ve come back, we have been taking care of the elderly with great effort..." Zheng Huilan, seeing her husband being scolded, also plucked up the courage to retort.
"You’re spouting bull, for you scoundrels to even claim you’ve been taking care of the elderly diligently?" Wang Dan started scolding with hands on her hips, "If you really cared for the elderly, would you have moved the old man to the storage room?"
"But wasn’t it our father himself who insisted on going there? We had no choice, you yourself came to ask about it at that time," Zheng Huilan argued with a hint of grievance.
"Bah, as if we’re all fools. The old man’s own room was fine, but he insisted on moving to the storage room? Did the old man have an affair with your mother, to put her on such a high pedestal?" Wang Dan held nothing back; the man had passed away, and she said whatever came to mind.
"Sister-in-law, watch your words, my father’s body is still lying in the room," Li Hongqi could not stand by and listen any longer.
