Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 859 - 849 Isn’t it just an act? It’s her specialty.
Chapter 859: Chapter 849 Isn’t it just an act? It’s her specialty.
"Uncle, why is it so sudden? The last time Mom called me, I even asked about Grandpa, wasn’t he still fine?" Goudan asked with red-rimmed eyes.
"Your Mom said that Grandpa caught a cold these past few days, and somehow threw up his food when nobody was around. The food might have gotten into his windpipe, and he just suffocated," Li Hongjun’s unfluctuating voice came from ahead.
Goudan hadn’t expected such a scenario, and stood there stunned for a moment, finally only able to wipe away his tears.
"Grandpa was half-paralyzed, wasn’t he? If he vomited, he should have still been able to move," Pangpang didn’t feel much for his grandfather; after all, he had only met him a few times. But that didn’t stop him from noticing the inconsistency.
Shen Yunfang glanced at Li Hongjun and then turned back to say, "Your grandpa indeed was half-paralyzed, but as you know, Grandpa was old, and even with half-paralysis, he didn’t have much mobility. After your aunt visited home several times, Grandpa was very happy, which made him agitated. His condition was such that he couldn’t handle too much emotional upheaval, and eventually, he became completely paralyzed."
That was the official explanation. In reality, Wang Dan had called around the new year, saying that when she visited the old man, she found that those three worthless ones had moved him to sleep in the storage room — the same storage room Li Hongjun and his wife lived in when they got married. Wang Dan wasn’t happy about it and went to confront Li Hongqi, only to be rebuffed after a few words.
"At a place where my second brother and his wife could live, why can’t my dad?" she had asked.
Listen to that, is that something a son should say? Is that something a human should say? He didn’t even consider what the old couple at the Li Family had gone through, offending their second son and his wife for whatever reasons.
Wang Dan, not giving up, had specifically visited the storage room to inquire about the old man’s opinion. If he objected, she would have insisted on moving him out, if for no other reason than the fact that the second son and his wife had entrusted her with watching out for things here.
As it turned out, though the old man couldn’t speak clearly, he expressed very firmly to his eldest son’s wife that he was willing. At his advanced age, he said, it didn’t matter where he lived. He suggested giving the house up for his younger son to live in.
There it was, the old man was willing, and Wang Dan couldn’t object any further. Li Hongjun remained silent on hearing the sister-in-law’s words; it was the old man’s own agreement, and no one else could say anything.
Later on, no one knew exactly how, but the old man’s condition suddenly got worse; he became bedridden on the kang and couldn’t move at all. He used to be able to babble a few words despite the confusion, but now he couldn’t utter a single word.
Wang Dan found the situation rather strange, but remembering the old man’s words a few days prior, she just went to see him and didn’t ask what exactly was wrong. Even if she had asked, the old man couldn’t speak now, and whatever happened would be determined by the Zheng family women.
Wang Dan didn’t want to quarrel with the mother and daughter of the Zheng Family and felt in her heart that there wasn’t much difference between being half-paralyzed and completely paralyzed since it all resulted in lying on the kang. So she didn’t say much. freewēbnoveℓ.com
Who would have thought that in just a few months, the old man would suddenly pass away?
Pangpang, after listening to his mother’s explanation, nodded like a little adult and stopped playing Sherlock Holmes. He found a comfortable spot in the car, cuddling his sister, and soon dozed off.
Thankfully, it was an SUV, with ample space inside. Two kids and two adults in the back did not feel cramped.
"Pull over for a bit; let’s switch, I’ll drive for a while."
Not sure how long they had been driving, Shen Yunfang spoke up.
"There’s no need. You get some rest," Li Hongjun replied, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
"I can’t sleep. On such a long journey, we must take turns driving; one person won’t do. Besides, once we get to our hometown, I can get a bit of rest, but you won’t be able to. Find a place to stop; I’ll also tidy up the back and spread some blankets so Pangpang and Manman can sleep more comfortably," Shen Yunfang insisted firmly.
Li Hongjun thought it over and realized his wife was right. If he drove all night, once they arrived, he had to take care of the funeral arrangements and wouldn’t be able to manage it all, so he stopped pushing himself and pulled over.
Shen Yunfang hopped out of the passenger seat, opened the trunk, and rearranged some things. She laid out the brought blankets thickly on the bottom, and then, together with Li Hongjun, each picked up a child and settled them onto the makeshift bed.
Although the space in the back wasn’t too big, it was still better than several people huddling together in the rear seat.
The children were settled, and only Goudan and his wife were in the back seat.
Shen Yunfang took the driver’s seat, adjusted her position, and started the car back on the road.
"Goudan, let your wife lie down in the back, stretch her legs. We probably won’t reach our hometown until morning, and sitting like this the whole time is unbearable." Shen Yunfang checked the rear-view mirror to see how they were doing.
"Oh," Goudan responded.
"It’s not necessary," Cui Ying was somewhat embarrassed.
"You two take turns lying down. Once we get to our hometown, I bet we’ll be busy, and without strength, it’ll be tough." Shen Yunfang spoke from experience.
Cui Ying thought about it, her man being the eldest grandson, there would inevitably be lots of bowing and kowtowing, so she quickly said, "I’m not tired, you lie down a bit."
"No need, I’m a grown man, I can handle the tiredness, you lie down." Goudan also felt for his wife. It had been almost two hours since they left, and his legs were almost numb from sitting; his wife must be feeling even worse.
"Stop dilly-dallying, you two. Take turns lying down, and that’s it. If you keep this up, it’ll be daylight." Shen Yunfang said, exasperated.
Goudan and Cui Ying exchanged glances, then Goudan stayed seated while Cui Ying did lie down, resting her head on Goudan’s thigh.
The car quieted down, Shen Yunfang focusing intently on the road ahead. Night driving wasn’t safe, and the car was filled with her most cherished people; safety was crucial.
On this trip, Shen Yunfang and Li Hongjun took turns driving two or three times. Each time they switched, apart from the two children who slept soundly like piglets, the four adults would get out to stretch their legs and relieve fatigue. The several lunchboxes Shen Yunfang had prepared also came in handy, as all four shared and ate from them.
Around six in the morning, the car had already arrived in the county. Shen Yunfang directly turned onto the street and stopped in front of a breakfast stall.
"Everyone wake up, we’re almost there. Let’s grab some breakfast in the county first."
When the car stopped, Goudan and the others woke up. Though anxious to get home, they knew she was right. Going back now, they likely wouldn’t have breakfast ready, so the best solution was to solve it in the county first.
After parking the car, Shen Yunfang went to wake the children in the rear.
Pangpang and Manman, groggy from sleep, were led by their mother to the breakfast stall.
"Mommy, there are fried breadsticks and sugar ones, I want that," Manman’s little nose twitched, and her eyes widened as she spotted the iron pot frying breadsticks and pastries and started to clamor for them.
For Manman, her grandparents had no place in her heart, so when her mother told her yesterday that Grandpa had passed away and they were returning to the hometown for the funeral, she didn’t take it to heart. So seeing her favorite food, she was instantly happy.
Shen Yunfang looked at Li Hongjun and sighed, "Okay, let’s all have a full breakfast this early in the morning. But once we get back to Grandpa and Grandma’s house, Manman has to behave, understand? Mommy has already told you, you can’t just say whatever you want in such situations."
She felt for her own daughter, since her grandparents had never looked favorably upon her, no wonder she felt no affection towards them.
"Mhm, I understand," Manman quickly nodded. It was just about putting on an act, and she was good at it.
