Chapter 805: Chapter 795 Phone Call

The family of four left the police station and it was already late. To catch the last bus home, they had no choice but to take out twenty meat-filled buns from a restaurant, planning to cook some porridge at home for dinner.

It was mainly because the day had been so eventful that Shen Yunfang couldn’t muster the energy to cook that evening.

After a rush, they finally got on the bus, and by the time they returned to the military compound, it had already turned dark.

As she was about to open the door to enter the house, the door opposite opened, and Sister Chen poked her head out.

"You’re just getting back, huh? You must have had fun all day." Sister Chen thought the family had been out enjoying themselves in the city, which is why they were returning so late.

"Yes, there was a bit of a delay, we’ve come back a bit late. What’s up, Sister, do you have something for us?" Shen Yunfang saw that the children and Li Hongjun had already gone inside, so she was left to handle the neighborly diplomacy.

"Indeed, I’ve been waiting all day for you." Sister Chen stepped out and joined Shen Yunfang in the hallway for a chat, "You wouldn’t know, but since this morning, around ten o’clock, young soldiers have been coming over looking for your Li Hongjun. They said there was a phone call from his hometown asking for him, likely something urgent at home. They called many times today. Eventually, the soldiers had no other option but to knock on my door and asked me to keep an eye out, telling me to let you call home urgently if anyone of you returned."

Everyone knew that the Li Family had a phone, it was just unclear why his hometown would reach out via the military compound instead of calling his home directly.

"Oh, I see, that’s what happened. Thank you, Sister Chen, I’ll have Li Hongjun call home in a bit." Shen Yunfang guessed it was probably Qiu Shuping who had made the call, as no one else would persist so doggedly, calling multiple times even though they knew he wasn’t home. Qiu Shuping had always been a bit neurotic that way.

"That’s good you know, I won’t keep you any longer, you must be exhausted after being out all day, go rest up." Sister Chen, understanding as ever, waved her hand and headed back home.

Shen Yunfang truly was tired and without further ado, she went inside, changed her shoes, changed her clothes, and relayed to Li Hongjun what Sister Chen had just told her.

"I think it must be your mother," Shen Yunfang concluded.

Li Hongjun didn’t respond but he felt the same.

"Let’s not worry about that right now, we are all worn out today. Go change, and I’ll boil some water, then you can get some porridge and we’ll eat it with the buns." They were all physically and mentally drained, making porridge was challenging, so she would get some from the stash to tide them over.

"Yeah, sure, I’ll change and head to the kitchen." Shen Yunfang didn’t object.

They both tried not to rely on the stash, and when they did, they made sure to avoid being seen, much like they did with their children, ensuring everything remained hidden. Like now, even though they would retrieve porridge, Li Hongjun would first light the stove in the kitchen, to make sure the hot porridge appeared normal when served.

After changing into her home clothes, Shen Yunfang headed to the kitchen.

Li Hongjun set the purchased buns on the dining table, "Go wash your hands."

By the time Shen Yunfang brought the porridge to the table, the children were sitting neatly at the dining table.

Just as the children reached for the buns on the table, the home phone rang.

Shen Yunfang glanced at Li Hongjun, "You answer the phone." It was likely a call from his hometown.

Li Hongjun set down his chopsticks and answered the phone.

"You guys don’t worry about it, go ahead and eat," Shen Yunfang told the children as she served the porridge.

"Yunfang, it’s your call." Li Hongjun picked up, spoke a few words, then called for his wife.

Shen Yunfang was holding a spoon and seemed surprised, "Someone’s looking for me? Who is it?" She never expected it.

"Your sister-in-law."

Shen Yunfang understood and put down the spoon before taking the phone.

"Hello, sister-in-law, you were looking for me?" Shen Yunfang sat down on the couch. Every time her sister-in-law called, it turned into a long conversation.

"Yunfang, everyone in your family went out today, right? The old lady called for Hongjun today; she called all day but couldn’t reach him," Wang Dan explained everything in one sentence.

Shen Yunfang nodded knowingly. It was indeed the grandmother who had called that day.

"Yeah, we rarely get a day off. The kids insisted on going to the city for a while, so we took them," she said. As for what happened in between, there was no need to go into such detail. After all, her sister-in-law didn’t call to find out that.

"Ah, what a coincidence! You wouldn’t believe it, but today our village was buzzing about how the old lady must have gone crazy. I don’t know what she was thinking, calling the brigade every half hour for Hongjun. Everyone was saying Hongjun is cursed to have such a mother," she chuckled.

Shen Yunfang didn’t reply. Though she felt the same, it was better not to say it so bluntly in front of Li Hongjun to save some face for him.

Wang Dan rambled on for quite a while before finally hanging up.

After putting the phone back, Shen Yunfang returned to the dining table to eat.

Li Hongjun didn’t ask what his sister-in-law had said on the phone because there was no need. It was definitely just the usual troubled stories about his mom and dad.

"Come on, eat your food, stop looking around." Shen Yunfang took a bite of her bun and watched Pangpang and Manman eating while staring at them, wondering what was going through their little minds.

Ring, ring, ring...

Shen Yunfang hadn’t even finished her bun when the phone rang again.

"You eat. I’ll get it." Li Hongjun had already eaten four buns and was almost full. He set down his bowl of porridge and stood up to answer the phone.

"Hello..."

Just one word and there was no need for Li Hongjun to speak further; the crying voice of Qiu Shuping roared through the phone. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

There it goes, the main person himself calling this time.

"Quickly eat up, finish your meal and then hurry back to your room to do homework. School starts tomorrow." Shen Yunfang saw the kids forgetting to put buns into their mouths as they looked toward Li Hongjun. She quickly reminded them to eat so that she could send them back to their room. With the grandmother’s loud voice piercing through the phone, it was best not to let the children hear that kind of foul language for their mental health.

"Mom, please don’t cry. Just tell me what the matter is," Li Hongjun said, unable to bear the screeching noise from the phone and trying to get to the point.

Shen Yunfang pursed her lips and held back a comment on Li Hongjun’s naive approach. The old lady had finally caught him; there was no way she’d let him off the hook easily.

Sure enough, by the time she had sent the kids back to their rooms and eaten four buns herself, Li Hongjun was still helplessly holding the receiver, enduring the verbal onslaught from the grandmother.

As predictable as the situation was, neither spouse could help. Shen Yunfang finished her last bite, stood up to clear the table, and undiplomatically left Li Hongjun to his fate as she went back to lie down in her room.
