Chapter 157: Chapter 157: The More a Mother-in-Law Looks at Her Son-in-Law, the More Satisfied She Is

"You deserve the best of everything in this world." Blaze’s voice was low and husky, full of emotion.

He had only said he wanted a hug, wanted some warmth, and she had decided to hug him twice every day.

’She’s so good, so passionate. She ignited his life, which had been as placid as still water.’

’How could he not be drawn to someone so wonderful?’

As his emotions swelled, Blaze couldn’t stop himself from capturing her lips in a kiss.

It was an urgent, fervent kiss, as if a wild beast was trapped inside him, thrashing about, desperate to find an escape.

This kiss had nothing to do with primal desire between a man and a woman; it was simply an outpouring of his emotions reaching their peak.

Luna Axton let him kiss her.

Her compliance and lack of resistance successfully pleased Blaze. His heavy breathing gradually steadied, and even the kiss transformed into a gentle confession.

Her simply listening was enough to bring him joy.

After their lips parted, he gave her another light, fleeting peck.

Blaze pressed the pad of his finger to her lips. They felt fuller than he remembered. "Are they swollen?"

His volume was neither loud nor soft, perfectly conveying his surprise.

"They feel a little puffy." Luna Axton hadn’t expected this either. ’It wasn’t the first time they had kissed so passionately, so how did her lips get swollen?’

"Let me see." As Blaze spoke, he turned and switched on the small night light.

He lifted Luna’s chin, using the light to get a closer look.

"Your skin is too delicate. It’s actually quite swollen." His handsome brows furrowed slightly, a mix of self-reproach and guilt in his expression. "I won’t be so rough next time."

He knew her skin was sensitive; even the slightest pressure would usually leave a mark. He just hadn’t expected her lips, which he had kissed so many times, to be so unable to withstand the force.

"I’ll go get some ice to put on it, okay?" The ointment for soothing skin irritation was at Lakeside Manor. He hadn’t planned on anything happening tonight, so he hadn’t brought it.

Being stared at so intently by Blaze, especially after they had just been kissing, made Luna Axton feel a little uncomfortable.

She subtly turned her head away and said nonchalantly, "It’s fine. There’s warm water on the nightstand. I’ll just drink some to moisten them, and it’ll be okay."

The whole family was here, and she didn’t want to cause a commotion at night.

Blaze understood what she was thinking, so he went along with her. After helping her drink some water, he turned off the light, and they went to sleep.

In another room, Jenna Axton and Russell Frost had both showered and were now sitting on the bed.

Russell Frost was looking at the news on his phone. He hadn’t drunk much, and with his high tolerance for alcohol, there was no change in his expression.

Jenna Axton was a different story. She and May Ford had drunk the most that evening.

Even after drinking the sobering soup a servant had prepared, her face was still flushed.

She was organizing the photos and videos taken that day.

Everyone was smiling so happily.

’We should have family gatherings like this more often in the future.’

Her hand, busy editing a photo, suddenly stopped. She remembered that Russell and Blaze had spent quite a while outside together earlier.

Jenna Axton asked curiously, "What did you and Blaze talk about today?"

Hearing this, the news page under Russell Frost’s fingertips uncontrollably scrolled several lines.

Without much thought, he replied in a nonchalant, lazy tone, "What can a father-in-law and son-in-law talk about? Our little treasure, of course." 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Jenna Axton pinched her thumb and index finger apart, zooming in on the image to edit the details.

Her attention was completely focused on editing, so she didn’t notice Russell Frost’s almost imperceptible change in demeanor.

"Blaze is a good kid. Don’t put pressure on him just because you dote on our little treasure so much. Dad always says that too much of a good thing is bad. The two of them are great, so don’t you meddle."

Russell Frost went along with her and replied, "I know."

He scrolled back to where he was and continued reading.

Russell Frost’s answer was too perfunctory, so Jenna Axton, feeling uneasy, added a few more words.

"And about the wedding for our treasure and Blaze—didn’t you say it yourself? We were just starting to think about planning one for them, and Blaze had already started ordering the engagement ring, wedding dress, and jewelry. It shows he’s truly serious about our treasure. With his attitude being what it is, you shouldn’t ask too much of him."

Russell Frost put down his phone, turned slightly, and looked at her with a half-smile.

He just watched her, saying nothing.

Jenna Axton was baffled. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Russell Frost teased, "The mother-in-law sizing up the son-in-law... it’s true, the more she looks, the more pleased she is, huh?"

"Between those two, there’s no distinction between daughter and son-in-law. They’re both my children."

Jenna Axton argued back. She had never treated or made demands of Blaze Fairchild as a son-in-law.

"When Blaze was born, the nurse brought him out, but Ian was only concerned about Susie’s postpartum condition and didn’t even glance at Blaze. I was the first person to hold him besides the nurse. I looked after him a lot during those years. He’s not my biological son, but for several years, I raised him almost as if he were."

"Yes, yes, yes," Russell Frost knew how she felt about Blaze. "I remember Ian and his wife were going to celebrate some festival, and you brought Blaze home. He and Ethan ended up playing with that cat of yours so much that it slept for days to recover."

Jenna Axton didn’t deny it, letting out a proud "Ahem."

"I get it, you’re very satisfied with this marriage. Let’s get some sleep. We have to go back early tomorrow to pack our bags and catch a flight."

Jenna Axton replied, "I’ll turn off the light after I save these pictures."

Once the light was off, the room dimmed. Only the moonlight provided a faint, unclear illumination.

Russell Frost lay in bed, staring at the ceiling and sighing to himself.

’We just got to spend a little time with our little treasure, how is it already time to go back to Kensing? Time flies so fast!’

"Something’s not right," Jenna Axton’s suspicious voice suddenly cut through the darkness.

Russell Frost’s palm suddenly broke out in a sweat. "What’s wrong?"

"There’s no way you like Blaze any less than you like our precious daughter. Back when you didn’t even know Luna’s identity, you still bought her a New Year’s gift. She had no connection to you, so you must have done it for Blaze’s sake. You were nice to Luna because of him. You were lying just now."

Jenna Axton’s analysis was well-reasoned and supported by evidence.

If she didn’t know Russell so well, he really would have muddled the issue and gotten away with it.

After all, Russell was a man who could turn any situation around with just a sentence or two.

Russell Frost’s lips curved into a smile that was tinged with helplessness.

"Then tell me, Adriana, besides checking in on his life and talking a bit about Luna, what else could Blaze and I possibly talk about?"

Faced with Russell Frost’s question, Jenna Axton was momentarily at a loss.

’Could he really be trying to get Blaze to sponsor Ethan’s lab?’

’No, that’s not right either.’

’If Ethan wanted that, he would only have to ask, and Blaze would never refuse. Why would he need his uncle to negotiate for him?’

"If I knew what you and Blaze talked about, I wouldn’t be asking you, would I?"

"You’ll find out eventually," Russell Frost said dismissively.

"Alright, then. If you won’t tell me, you can find your own blanket." With her hand on the comforter, Jenna Axton rolled to the other side of the bed, wrapping the one and only blanket around herself.

"There’s only one blanket," Russell Frost said with a wry smile.

Jenna Axton kept her back to him, clearly intending to ignore him.

’We’ve only been having a few good days, and he already dares to keep little secrets from me!’

’If he’s not going to be honest, then he can forget about getting close to me.’

Russell Frost knew she was angry, but her liver wasn’t in good health, and he couldn’t bear to see her upset.

"Turn around, and I’ll tell you."

"Too late. I don’t want to hear it. You can go to sleep hugging your precious secret. I wish you a good night and sweet dreams!"

Russell Frost was amused by her childish pout, but he sobered when she let out a cold huff.

He wrapped his arms around her, comforter and all, resting his chin on Jenna Axton’s shoulder and whispering a name in her ear.

After hearing it, Jenna Axton instantly bristled like a kitten encountering its natural enemy, immediately switching into combat mode.

"If he dares to touch my Luna, I’ll beat him half to death and make sure he gets to reunite with his son in prison!"
