Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Feeling Fear for the First Time in Her Life

"Vera."

Hannah Hayes smiled and said, "At that time, Vera and Mark were only a few months old, but if you look closely, it’s easy to tell them apart."

Winston Valentine stared at the photo, "What is she holding in her hand?"

Hannah Hayes looked momentarily confused, and then seemed flustered, taking the photo in hand.

"It’s... it’s a toy her grandfather made for her. When they were children, her grandfather often... often made little things for them."

Winston Valentine’s phone rang.

He stepped out of the room to answer it, and Walter Lowell said deferentially, "President Valentine, the paternity test results for Rae Rhodes and Mr. Valentine are out. They have no blood relationship."

Winston Valentine tightened his grip on the phone, "I understand. Now go investigate another matter..."

Seeing Winston Valentine step out, Hannah Hayes finally put the photo into a compartment, fearing it would fall out again, she hid it even deeper.

After finishing the call, Winston Valentine returned to the room, and Hannah Hayes was holding the album, "I’ll go put the album away first."

Winston Valentine nodded.

After Hannah Hayes left the room, it became quiet.

Winston Valentine gazed at Vera Yves’s back for a long time before finding his voice, "I have an urgent matter to attend to, I need to leave now."

Vera Yves’s motion of flipping through a book paused, he just said he would spend the afternoon with her.

Vera Yves acknowledged softly.

Winston Valentine turned and left the room.

Vera Yves stayed at The Yves Family home for another afternoon, and went to the clinic by dusk. Miles Monroe had already left, leaving the notebook he had copied on the table.

She had originally planned to copy things over two days, but he finished it all in one go.

Looking at the familiar handwriting on the notebook, Vera Yves dissuaded herself from overthinking and closed the notebook.

After organizing some documents, Vera Yves hurried back to the villa.

The villa was desolate, Winston Valentine hadn’t returned yet, Vera Yves took a shower and lay on the bed.

She didn’t know how much time had passed when the door was pushed open.

A man lay on the bed, embracing her from behind.

Vera Yves slept drowsily, smelled the familiar scent, and turned over, curling up into his arms.

Winston Valentine lowered his head, gazed at the woman in his arms, and traced her facial contours bit by bit with his hand, making Vera Yves feel ticklish, burrowing deeper into his embrace.

Still in her dreams, Vera Yves had a gentle expression, unaware of what she was dreaming about.

Will your dreams have me in them?

Winston Valentine held her tightly, longing to merge her into his own being.

Vera Yves felt pain and scrunched her little face, trying to push him away.

Winston Valentine then loosened his grip, listening to her gentle breathing, and gazed at the moonlight outside the window, feeling fear for the first time in his life.

When Vera Yves woke up in the morning, Winston Valentine was no longer in the room.

She thought he hadn’t returned at all, changed her clothes, and went downstairs.

She first made a trip to the Hillside Villa.

Rae Rhodes greeted her cheerfully, "Vera Yves Sis, you’re here."

Recalling her identity, Vera Yves nodded politely, "I’ll go see Ms. Sutton first."

Vera Yves went upstairs to assist Cleo Sutton with her treatment.

Cleo Sutton’s condition had improved compared to the beginning, with noticeable improvement in her appetite, and her body was not as gaunt as before.

Rae Rhodes donned new clothes, her whole demeanor elevated considerably.

She enthusiastically invited Vera Yves for lunch, "Vera Yves Sis, should I prepare lunch for you?"

"Sorry, I have a lunch appointment."

Rae Rhodes looked disappointedly at her, "Sis, do you dislike me?"

Vera Yves wasn’t sure whether Rae Rhodes knew her identity, but Cleo Sutton certainly did, otherwise Cleo Sutton wouldn’t have asked her to help Rae Rhodes buy these expensive clothes.

"No, I really have an appointment with someone."

Vera Yves offered her a polite smile and turned to leave.

Rae Rhodes watched her silhouette recede into the distance, her smile gradually fading. Acting high and mighty? Just wait until I become The Valentine Family’s heiress, then you’ll have to flatter me!

Tristan Valentine happened to enter, and Rae Rhodes immediately reverted to a sweet demeanor, "Uncle Valentine."

Tristan Valentine nodded, but his attitude towards her was not intimate, and he went upstairs.

Rae Rhodes couldn’t understand, the paternity test results were conclusive, why hadn’t Tristan Valentine made plans to confirm her lineage? And who knows how many days Cleo Sutton could live? She didn’t come here to play housekeeper!

Vera Yves hadn’t lied to Rae Rhodes; she indeed had an appointment with Zoe Monroe to shop and buy skiing equipment.

Vera Yves was in the early stages of pregnancy and naturally didn’t dare to ski, just accompanied Zoe Monroe to buy gear.

Zoe Monroe looked at her with suspicion, "Vera, why can’t you ski? Are you..." Zoe Monroe’s gaze swept over Vera Yves’s belly, "Is it your time of the month?"

Vera Yves breathed a sigh of relief, "Yes."

"Then we can schedule another time."

Her belly would only grow bigger, Vera Yves smiled at her, "It’s alright, I’ll accompany you, it’s good to relax."

Zoe Monroe clung to her arm, "My cousin’s flight is tomorrow afternoon, Vera, will you come with me to see him off?"

Vera Yves shook her head; wasn’t he supposed to stay for a week?

Zoe Monroe was used to her refusal and complained, "My cousin originally said he would stay for a week, but you ignored him, and now he’s leaving after his tasks are done. Vera, you’re still holding grudges like when you were a kid!"

Vera Yves chuckled, "Isn’t holding grudges good? That way, you won’t fall twice in the same place."

Zoe Monroe lowered her voice, "Actually, my cousin had a big row with my uncle. My uncle wants him to get married and settle back home early, but he refuses..."

Suddenly, there was a commotion in the crowd.

"Jane Shea is holding an event here! It’s right on the first floor!" Someone shouted, and many people rushed downstairs with their phones.

Zoe Monroe was bumped by someone and said disdainfully, "What’s so good about Jane Shea!"

"Please, Jane Shea is a national goddess!" somebody responded.

"Whatever, she’s just a white lotus!"

Zoe Monroe didn’t want to see Jane Shea, she held onto Vera Yves’s arm and decided to find a different place, the two got on the descending escalator.

On the first floor at a cosmetic counter, Jane Shea held a skincare product in her hand, smiling brightly at the numerous cameras.

Wearing a custom black gown by a certain brand, she appeared elegant and noble.

When switching products, Jane Shea sensed something and looked in the direction of the escalator.

Vera Yves met her gaze, and a memory from years ago of their first encounter flashed through her mind, when Jane Shea’s eyes held deep hostility.

Vera Yves retracted her gaze expressionlessly, treating her as a stranger.

Jane Shea only glanced briefly but saw clearly.

Vera Yves was still as she remembered, dressed in expensive clothes, as regal as a princess, now more refined, stunning in her beauty.

Jane Shea regained composure and smiled more brightly at the cameras.

Leaving the mall, Zoe Monroe continued to criticize, "My cousin is just sentimental, otherwise, would he have accompanied her all these years!"

The two found a nearby restaurant for lunch, and Zoe Monroe vented about Jane Shea for a good half hour, but Vera Yves didn’t really listen.

Zoe Monroe drank alcohol, and Vera Yves drove her home.

But just as the car got on the road, a black car suddenly surged toward Vera Yves’s car.

Vera Yves swerved the steering wheel.

With a loud "bang!"

The car collided with the roadside guardrail.

The impact was so severe the airbags deployed.

Vera Yves was so frightened her body went limp, instinctively touching her belly.
