Chapter 78 - Why don't you perform it on our behalf?

Kang-woo wanted to go after Chin-Hwa as soon as he ran out, especially after he saw that he had left his score behind, but Yoon-woo asked him to fill out the club's form before leaving.

It didn't take him long but then the other members had all these sorts of questions they were curious about. He didn't want to be rude, but he knew that if Chin-Hwa ran too far before he saw him again, it would be at their parent's place the next day, and he wasn't sure he would want to talk about it.

He would like to settle his unwillingness to perform as soon as possible so that they could start practicing soon.

"I'm sorry, but I really have to catch up with Hwa." He said. "I'll answer all your questions next time we meet, okay?"

He slipped out of there and then ran in the direction he was sure Chin-hwa had run into, only to find him talking to Ji-hoo. Was he everywhere?

Yes, they were dating, but wasn't he a sports measure? Wasn't this the time when he was supposed to be practicing sports or something like that?

Just seeing them together like that, alone, made him feel uneasy in the worst way possible.

He knew these emotions would do him no good, so he took in a deep breath and exhaled before approaching with a calm demure.

"Hwa," he called and they both turned to see him. He walked towards them, stopped, and said to Chin-hwa, "You forgot your score sheet for the performance."

He stretched it towards him but Chin-Hwa frowned and said,

"I don't want to partake in the performance, Kang-woo. I'm sure I made that clear when I left the score back there."

"But everyone has to perform." Kang-woo said to him.

"Then, why don't you perform it on our behalf?" Chin-hwa suggested, folding his arms and Kang-woo went silent.

"Um, I'm right here." Ji-hoo said but they ignored his existence, engaging in an eye battle. "Oh, um, alright. I... I'll just be in the corner, listening."

"So far," Kang-woo finally spoke up, dropping his hand. "You haven't given me a valid reason why you won't climb up the stage. And though I feel my absence may have contributed to your plight, I want to help you out."

"Ah, you sound confident." Chin-hwa said, stepped towards him, and poked his chest. "Was that what you intended to do when you played Heartbeat in front of everyone? Was that your way of helping me?"

"I hoped it would do some good," he slowly lowered his head. "But it seems it did no single good. Chin-hwa, I'm sorry. But I can not stop."

"Will you just leave me alone?"

"No, I cannot." He plainly stated with a straight face. "I will not leave you be, at least not with this issue." He refused to smile at a time like this to prove how serious he was.

"Then after the performance, will you finally leave me alone?" Chin-hwa asked but with that same straight face, he answered,

"No, I will not leave you alone." He stepped closer. "It is impossible for me to ignore your existence and look the other way."

"Why? Because I'm your childhood best friend who you abandoned for three years?" Chin-hwa asked, his tongue laced with bitterness.

It struck Kang-woo's heart but he was not ready to back down.

"No, it's because you are Chin-hwa and I... I can not live without you." He said with a straight face and eyes that glistened with sincerity.

Like an arrow shot right out of Cupid's bow, Chin-hwa felt his heart pricked by that pure and intoxicating feeling of love.

His words... How could he say such words with a straight face? No, how could he even say such words to him? They were very misleading.

Ji-hoo was at the corner acting as a spectator and watching with popcorn as another guy made a pass to his boyfriend.

He was confident that Kang-woo would not confess for real but this turned out to be far more surprising than he imagined. To think Kang-woo would say that line?

He looked towards Chin-hwa. Did he get the hint yet?

"Kang-woo, you... You're lying to me right now, aren't you?"

Kang-woo's heart throbbed and he pursed his lips.

"How can I lie?" He asked and Chin-hwa shut him down.

"How can you not?" He yelled at him. "You said you cannot live without me and yet you go away for three years without so much as a reason or explanation." He poked his chest. "Or did it take you those bloody three years to realize that you could not live without me?"

Kang-woo held his hand and pressed it to his chest.

"Every single day living away from you, I always thought of you, Hwa. I would never lie to you, and that is why I made no excuse before I left. Believe me, in all my life, there is only one thing I have ever lied to you about." He said.

Chin-hwa stared at his pleading eyes. He was telling the truth.

They did not want to tell him why he left for the States, and Kang-woo did not open his mouth to give him a reason either. Be it a lie or truth, he said nothing and only asked him to go home that night.

But that did not make it okay. He wanted an explanation to this day.

"I want an explanation," Chin-hwa said.

"You will get it. But it's not time yet." Kang-woo said. "Just know that the reason I left had nothing to do with you, but it was for your sake that I left the reason hidden."

"For my sake?" Chin-hwa asked and he nodded. "Ah, was that why no one would tell me anything? It was for my sake that you left, so they knew that if I knew the reason, I wouldn't be okay? I wouldn't be able to handle it?"

Kang-woo nodded, finally hoping that Chin-hwa was getting it when Chin-hwa frowned, took his hand out of his grip, and said,

"And do you think I was okay being oblivious?" He asked with harshness in his tongue. "I would've rather be let in on the plan and suffer than suffer for no reason."

"No, you wouldn't." Kang-woo said.

"Ha, as if you knew what I had to go through." Chin-hwa hissed. "You weren't here to see how I was doing, so you have no idea how much I suffered because of your sudden absence."

"But wouldn't that be better than knowing that I was on the verge of death?" Kang-woo suddenly asked and Chin-hwa's eyes widened.

"What... What did you say?"
