Chapter 47: Dragon Guard

The next few days passed in a blur.

Vacuse spent most of it in his room, learning everything he could from Rith, but the little Dragon is as lazy as he is stubborn. He would sleep instead of teaching Vacuse anything, telling him obscure things like, ’only your mind can show you the way’ or ’meditation will do you lots of good.’

What good? He wasn’t told.

Rith slept, and even when Vacuse was able to shake him awake, he trained.

The only thing Rith complimented him about was his control over energy. And even then, it was said with the most scorn and scowl. ’..our control isn’t bad. But that’s it. You’ll need to work even harder if you want to use the Void. It demands precise control because once you lose control, you’re dead..’

Vacuse had learned everything with greedy eyes. He wanted more power, and all the knowledge he could get would add to his power.

The only thing was.

Rith is a horrible teacher.

Very horrible.

The Void Dragon is a Void Dragon. For him, teaching Vacuse felt like teaching him how to breathe, or drink water, to chew. It was instinctive for him to use the Void.

After two days, Vacuse let him know about it.

’..what? I don’t know how to teach? Or it’s your human head that’s too heavy to comprehend. How can you not know how to do this? This is the most simplest of the techniques. Flicker Lance!..’

Then Rith showed him.

It was a void energy, dark in colors like faded and forgotten memory. As Rith said, the Void didn’t have a color, but due to their own mentality and perception, they perceived it as black and so it’s black.

The Flicker Lance is a needle-big spear of void; it was as long as a spear.

’...see how easy it is? You can use this as a spear and it would pierce a lot of things. But most importantly, use it for the heart. Go on, give it a try just like I showed you..’

Vacuse would frown because Rith only showed him the spear. He would sigh. "Tell me how you do it, Rith. You said the Void is powered by my will and determination. That’s also my imagination, right? Do I just imagine it? Like willing it to life?"

’..something like that. I mean, it’s not like I can remember when I started doing it! I always remember doing it! But you can give it a try..’

Then Vacuse would begin to give it a try, and he finally understood what Rith said when he pointed out that his control isn’t really all that.

Vacuse tried and tried, and not even a drop of void appeared.

’..and do you know why you need to start practicing with the Flicker Lance? It’s exactly because it tests your precision and energy control. It makes it better..’

By the fourth day, when nothing happened, Vacuse finally left his room after he had his afternoon bath.

"Where are you headed, my lord?" Captain Yemi asked as he stepped out of his room.

Vacuse was dressed lightly in red with a sword by his side and his Dragon by his neck. "I want to take a look at my New Dawn."

Captain Yemi hesitated and then gestured for some of his men that were around to join him as they formed around Vacuse in a way that should feel protective, but instead, it was oppressive.

Vacuse raised his brows. ’..I’ve been so busy with myself that I forgot that Captain Yemi is also a tool planted by my precious father to use against me. To control me...’

’..but seriously...is father underestimating me?..’

Vacuse took a step down the hallway, and his ’guards’ moved to block the way. He sighed. ’..do I really need to use my sword all the time?..’

But even as he thought of that, his eyes quickly took note of all the guards, and he came to a realization—with his current power, he can’t take any one of them on one against one and win without serious injury.

And there are about seven of them.

Vacuse’s frown deepened. ’..but I can use my status as the heir to kill at least two of them. Maybe. No, it’s impossible at the level I am right now. The Dragon Guard really lived up to their name..’

"What’s the meaning of this, Captain?" Vacuse said in a hard voice.

"The Dragon suggests strongly that you should not show yourself outside until the dinner ceremony, my lord."

"My father said so?"

"Yes, my lord."

"Did he tell you the reason?"

"No, my lord."

"And what do you think about such orders?"

"It is not my place to question the Dragon Lord, my lord."

"And the Dragon Guard only listens to the Dragon Lord."

"Yes, my lord."

"Then tell me. What is the job of the Dragon Guard?"

"Our job? Our job is to serve the Dragon Lord."

"And what about the heir?"

There was a pause. Then, "We only serve the Dragon Lord."

"Then the Dragon Lord didn’t tell you to kill me, right?"

The pause was longer this time. "No, my lord."

Vacuse smiled, and Captain Yemi shivered for reasons he couldn’t explain. "Good. That means I can do this!"

In a fluid and swift motion, Vacuse drew his sword, and then he shot forward down the hallway and towards two of the guards that were blocking it.

Bloodlust aura surrounded him so much that they instinctively raised their weapons and moved into attack pose.

"Stop!" Captain Yemi shouted, whether at the guards or at Vacuse.

Either way, Vacuse didn’t stop as he moved with lightning speed, his sword held upward, waiting for the downward arc to cut them down.

And as he said of the Dragon Guard, they are elite, and the two guards realized that Vacuse wasn’t going to back down and their orders couldn’t allow them to hurt him.

So they gritted their teeth at the mad heir that’s about to cut them down.

Vacuse grinned as he saw them standing there so loyal. It would have been worth it if they were loyal to the right person. But alas.

If his father wanted to fight him, then he would step over the blood of his Dragon Guard.
