Chapter 46: Board and games

Rith scowled.

He couldn’t really, but it gave the feeling that he was, and he definitely glared at Vacuse. ’..this is your mentality warping and twisting what it should be. For now, be satisfied that you can use it..’

Vacuse sighed. "Alright. Then how about we focus on some techniques for now? We should focus on what will give me more power. I think I’m going to be needing it soon."

Rith shrugged. ’..focus and will. That’s the biggest thing that needs to be known for understanding and using the Void magic. As you know, most of the magic of the Soulbearer depends on the Beast. Since they study different types of magic and are from different types of magic themselves..’

’..even beasts of the same bloodline have different ways of using magic. You should note that, by the way. There’s incantations, hand gestures, use of objects like wand or wooden rod. Formations, runes and such. There are even conditional magic..’ freewebnøvel_com

’..so when you encounter Soulbearers, you should not fight them based on what you think about their magic, but instead based on what they do and how they act..’

Vacuse listened intently.

Even though it was something he already learned before in his previous life. His magic power in his previous life was too weak to focus on a specialized method of magic casting.

Instead, he focused more on using a combination of incantation and hand gestures.

"Thank you," he said to the Void Dragon. His voice was low and solemn. And he wasn’t just thanking him for the lesson.

Rith looked at him for a long time and then snorted. ’..but for Void magic, your mind will be the forge that will write out the techniques, and your determination will be the power behind it. Go and reflect on what the Void is. Your mentality is just as important..’

Vacuse nodded, but before he could do just that, a knock came from the door and a woman pushed the door open, accompanied by Captain Yemi.

The woman was elegant, her back straight and her hair pulled back firmly. Her red eyes looked at the room coldly. She took two steps in and gave a perfect curtsy.

"Lord Vacuse Vorrakyn, I am Vanessa Vorrakyn, and I am your etiquette instructor," the woman said flatly.

"Etiquette instructor," Vacuse replied in the same flat tone.

"Yes, my lord. There are twenty-seven lessons about Elegance and Conduct.

"They cover Dress and Appearance, Posture and Movement, Speech and Behavior, Dining Etiquette, and Social Protocols."

Vacuse raised his brows as he sat back on his seat. Captain Yemi stood there also watching, his eyes still as sharp as ever.

Vanessa took several steps forward. "That is not how a noble heir should sit, my lord. And that expression is unbecoming of you."

Vacuse could already feel a headache building, but he didn’t say anything. Not at first. He analyzed.

He understood perfectly what was happening. It was all a game of control. His precious father, Drenvar Vorrakyn, wanted to control Vacuse, and he wanted to do it swiftly and in a subtle way.

First, he dismissed the ceremony that was to happen that night, and then stripped him of his new guards of New Dawn, and then sent Captain Yemi and his squad to him.

And then he sent this Vanessa Vorrakyn to test the limits he could push and control.

All of the things he’d done so far were reasonable and well, but Vacuse understood all too well what was happening.

Vacuse wasn’t angry. He simply understood that the world itself is a giant board, and everyone is a piece. Everyone can be moved and played with.

If Vacuse didn’t know Drenvar’s way, he would have fallen for it.

Vacuse smiled. "Was it my father that sent you?"

"Yes, it is indeed the Honorable Grand Duke," Vanessa replied.

Vacuse nodded thoughtfully. "Tell me, Vanessa. Do you know your history well?"

She was confused, but she nodded. "Yes."

"Then you must know this popular one. There was once a Vorrakyn who was told to learn bullshit," Vacuse’s smile widened at the surprised look on her face. "They wanted to teach him how to talk in public and shit. Do you know what happened to the instructor?"

She shifted slightly, her face going pale.

"Ah! Let’s see. When last have any Vorrakyn been taught about all this twenty-seven shit you just said? Tell me, Vanessa, did my father, the Dragon Lord, learn all of this?

"So, tell me, why are you telling me you’re my instructor and you want to teach me etiquette?"

Vacuse smiled gently. "Vanessa. Do you know what you are going to do for me?"

She was too stunned and shook her head without thinking.

He said softly. "Go fuck yourself."

He said it so gently, and yet she flinched as a chill ran down her spine. She took a step back and then opened her mouth, but Vacuse was speaking again.

"Rith. The technique you talked about, can’t we use a live target for practicing?"

Immediately she heard that and remembered what was told to her about what happened in the hall, she turned to flee. All etiquette and elegance forgotten. She even forgot to curtsy.

Vacuse frowned after she opened the door and closed it hurriedly. "Well, it’s very unbecoming of you."

Captain Yemi coughed. "I’ll be waiting outside, my lord."

Then he went out.

Vacuse turned to Rith. There was no amusement on his face. "How long do you think before me and Drenvar come into a real clash? I’m his bargaining chip and hope right now. A weapon. And he wants a leash on me."

Rith flapped his wings and snorted. ’..Dragon take no leash..’

"I know. I don’t like it either. I wore one for a lifetime. But the problem right now is that he’s more powerful than me. I don’t think he’ll try to kill me though. But he can put me in a very difficult position.

"He’s already building a cage for me through the Dragon Guard."

Rith yawned. ’..you brat, why are you asking me when you already know what you are going to do..’

Vacuse smiled. "I suppose I do."
