Chapter 217: Harnessing Convergence (Part 1)

The journey had been long, and the weight of their walking pressed heavily on Luke’s shoulders.

His thoughts swirled as they trudged through the dense underbrush, his mind still replaying the rush of power from his recent Convergence.

His body, though still tingling with the aftereffects, had settled into a quiet exhaustion.

"Not much further now," Rem said, his voice steady, though the shadows in his eyes told a different story.

They had reached the edge of the route that separated them from the small town they sought. It was a simple enough place — nothing extraordinary, just a waypoint before their final destination: the city where they hoped to reach, he didn’t know why Rem wanted to reach the city quickly.

Luke nodded, but something about this part of the route unsettled him. The trees were twisted, their gnarled limbs clawing at the sky like ancient, skeletal fingers.

There was a chill in the air, the scent of moss and decay thickening with every step. He glanced to the side, where Kiara walked in near silence, her eyes sharp, as if she sensed something was off as well.

Rem led the way with a quiet confidence, but Luke knew better than to underestimate his mentor’s caution.

Rem had always been careful, and this route seemed to demand that same wariness.

They had been walking for hours now, the trees growing thicker and the underbrush more difficult to navigate.

The sunlight, filtered through the canopy above, barely touched the ground. The atmosphere felt heavy, oppressive, as though the forest itself was watching them.

"I don’t like this," Kiara muttered, her gaze darting back and forth, as if expecting something to leap from the shadows. "It feels... wrong."

Luke could only agree. The silence in the woods was almost unnatural, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves underfoot or the distant call of some unseen creature.

It felt like they were intruders in a place that didn’t want them there.

Rem halted suddenly, raising a hand to signal for them to stop. His eyes narrowed, scanning the area with practiced precision.

"What is it?" Luke asked, his voice hushed.

"Something’s coming," Rem replied, his tone grim. "We need to move quickly."

Before anyone could respond, the ground trembled beneath their feet. It was subtle at first, but it grew stronger, a low vibration that seemed to echo through the ground.

Then, without warning, a low growl sounded from behind them, followed by the unmistakable rustle of something large pushing through the dense bushes.

"Get ready," Rem said, his hand going to the hilt of his blade.

Kiara’s stance shifted instantly, her eyes now glowing with the same intensity that had marked her earlier Convergence.

Luke felt his pulse quicken. His body, still humming with the leftover energy of his recent power surge, was ready — too ready.

The growling grew louder, closer. Luke could see shapes moving between the trees, their silhouettes large and menacing.

He couldn’t make out their exact form, but the shifting shadows and the heavy footfalls spoke of creatures far larger than mere animals.

A hulking shape burst from the trees with a roar, its claws scraping the bark of a nearby tree. It was a beast — its body covered in scales that shimmered with an eerie, dark sheen. A twisted, jagged horn protruded from its forehead, and its eyes burned with an unnatural, crimson glow.

Behind it, more creatures emerged, each one more terrifying than the last.

"Monsters," Luke whispered, gripping the hilt of his sword as he stepped forward, ready to fight.

Rem’s voice cut through the air like a command. "Kiara, take the left. Luke, stay close to me."

Without hesitation, the three of them split, each taking their position.

Luke’s heart raced, but he could feel the adrenaline starting to surge through his veins. The monsters were upon them in moments, their growls reverberating through the air.

The first beast lunged at Rem, its massive claw swiping down with terrifying speed. Rem was ready, his sword flashing in a blur of motion.

The blade met the creature’s claw with a sharp crack, sending sparks flying. The beast snarled, but Rem didn’t give it a moment to recover.

With a fluid movement, he twisted, using the creature’s momentum against it, and plunged the sword into its side.

Kiara, on the other hand, was moving like lightning. She darted between trees, her form a blur of motion as she attacked the creatures with quick, precise strikes.

Her soul energy crackled around her, creating a shimmering barrier that blocked one of the monsters’ blows before she delivered a crushing punch to its side. The creature let out a howl of pain, but Kiara was already on the move again, striking with deadly accuracy.

Luke stood his ground, waiting for an opening. One of the monsters, its large jaws snapping at the air, charged at him.

The beast was quick, faster than he had anticipated, but Luke’s reflexes had been sharpened by the intensity of training with Rem.

He dodged to the side, feeling the wind from the creature’s massive maw as it missed him by inches. His punch found its mark, smashing into the beast’s side, but the monster barely flinched. It let out an enraged roar and swung its claws toward him.

Luke ducked, narrowly avoiding the swipe, and before the monster could land another blow, he focused his soul energy, channeling it into his fists. His fists crackled with energy, and Luke punched upward, sending a wave of raw force into the creature’s chest.

The monster screeched as the energy ripped through its hide, and it fell to the ground with a heavy thud.

"Nice work," Rem called out, not taking his eyes off the remaining beasts. "But don’t get too comfortable."

Luke didn’t need telling twice. There were still more creatures emerging from the shadows, and they weren’t slowing down.

Kiara’s voice rang out above the chaos. "I think I’ve had enough of these things!"

With a fierce yell, Kiara focused all her energy into one final strike, her body glowing with the intensity of her soul.

She darted forward, her fist crackling with black and crimson power. She struck the largest of the monsters in the chest, and the explosion of soul energy sent a shockwave rippling through the forest, knocking back the remaining beasts.

For a moment, the world was still.

The monsters, now defeated, lay scattered around them, their bodies twitching as the life drained from them. Kiara stood tall, her chest heaving with exertion, while Luke wiped the sweat from his brow.

Rem was already moving, his sword still at the ready, eyes scanning the area for any remaining threats. "Good job, both of you. But this isn’t over."

Luke glanced at Kiara, who shared his look of exhaustion and relief. "What do you mean?" he asked.

Rem’s eyes narrowed. "There’s something else. We need to leave"

The weight of his words hung in the air, heavy and foreboding. And then they quickly ran down the path, aiming to leave.
