The Kingmaker System-Chapter 424 - 423. Birthday Gift (3)
Chapter 424: 423. Birthday Gift (3)
Davian stared at the three accessories that he had picked out. One was a pair of delicate silver filigree earrings falling in graceful tiers, each adorned with amethyst gems that shimmered like violet fire. The floral and teardrop design added an air of refined elegance.
Second was a hair vine; it had a soft blue heart-shaped crystal resting at the center, flanked by silver wings etched with vines and stars. Sapphire-dotted chains draped down like strands of starlight, giving it a celestial feel.
And lastly was a bracelet with silver vines curling into a gentle band, inlaid with both amethyst and blue stones that gleamed softly together. Light and regal, it felt like moonlight and dusk held at the wrist.
All three were quite beautiful, and it seemed like that was why Davian was having a hard time deciding which one to pick.
"Say, Master. Which one should I pick?" he asked, and I hummed, looking at all three.
"What kind of lady are you gifting it to?" I asked.
Davian’s eyes sparkled for a moment, the amethyst hue deepened, and I could see him envisioning her.
"She’s... really beautiful, like the fleeting moonlight... She looks quite fragile, but her words can give one strength," he said, and I hummed. Just where did he find such a woman who made him speak like a lovestruck poet?
I was even more excited to see her.
"What are her eyes like?" I asked, now seriously giving it a thought.
"They’re... like deep blue lakes, shimmering under moonlight," he said, and I smiled.
"Someone is really smitten," I spoke before I picked up the bracelet which had both amethyst and blue stones.
"This one would do. It has the shade of your eyes as well as hers. If she is an intelligent and deep person, she might know what you mean by gifting her this," I said, handing him the bracelet, and he stared at it before he looked at the other two.
"Or buy all three of them," I said with a shrug, making him chuckle shyly.
"I guess I’ll gift her this but also buy these for the future," he said, and I smiled.
"Please pack these up," he said to the attendant, and I looked at him.
His softened expression and the light in his eyes made it clear that he genuinely liked this girl. I wondered how she was—if she was the future Grand Duchess, then I would have to make connections with her as well.
"Introduce her to me someday, Your Highness. I’d love to see the lady who had turned the Beast of the Battlefield into a poet."
His smile faltered, and he averted his eyes.
"What’s wrong? Are you scared that I might steal her from you?" I asked, and he chuckled.
"No... But I guess her family doesn’t like me."
"Hm... Then behave nicely with them. Try and communicate. Communication is the best way to make connections and leave positive impressions," I suggested, and he nodded.
"All right."
After the gifts were sorted, we stepped out. The town was busy, so we had to weave past the crowd. I had one more work here, so I’d just do that and then we could return home.
The people greeted me as I moved past until I sensed the familiar presences around, and I sighed.
"What’s wrong?" Davian asked, and I picked up pace until I made my way to the alleyway where I could hear the familiar voice.
"This is the third time now. I warned you the other two times when I saw you that you shouldn’t be out here!"
"We-We’re sorry..."
"But we really had to come..."
"Yes, it was an emergency!"
"What kind of emergency?"
"We... had—"
I sighed, and suddenly they stopped talking. I walked towards the mouth of the alleyway and spotted Enora and three of the kids from Eldarf there, staring right back at me with wide, horrified eyes—Rowan, Cyrus, and Viella.
"Ma-Master!"
They all seemed to be prepared to bolt, but I simply crossed my arms at my chest.
"Will running away save you?" I asked, making them all flinch and look at each other. Enora bowed before me.
"I-I’m sorry, Master. I—"
"No need for you to apologize, Enora," I spoke, and the kids flinched as I eyed them.
"I have some work now, so I’ll be leaving first," I spoke. "Return to Eldarf, and I will come see you in the evening."
The kids exchanged glances, and even Enora looked at them.
"Enora, go back to your work. And Prince Davian," I said, making him look at me.
"Yes?"
"Can I leave the responsibility of them with you?" I asked, gesturing at the kids.
Davian seemed taken aback, but then he smiled. "All right."
We dispersed from there after that, and I sighed. It wasn’t like I was against them roaming around in my town—they were strong and well-behaved kids—but this was not the time for that. I was planning on giving them the freedom to roam around freely, but the current times are dangerous with the Queen waiting for a chance to get a jab at me, and if anything were to happen to these kids because of that then—I couldn’t imagine what kind of catastrophe I would bring over the Golden Serpent.
I reached in front of the bookstore and walked in, greeting the attendant who was there, and went straight upstairs.
I had to collect some intel that I had told Rose to get a couple of days ago.
I opened the secret door and walked down the stairs, sensing two presences down there—and the sounds that were a slight bit strange. I was going to walk in on something.
I stopped at the middle of the stairs and waited for a couple of minutes, clamping my ears shut. I should give a proposal to Silas for making earphones.
After the sounds were done, I waited a couple more minutes, and then I cleared my throat.
"Rose? Are you down there?" I spoke in a louder voice.
The sudden flurry of sounds erupted from downstairs—like things falling and the duo hurrying.
"Yes, Master! Just wait a minute!" she hollered back, and I shook my head.
These two...
I went down after she called for me, and I saw her standing near my desk. I sighed as I observed her frantically made hair, crumpled dress, and flushed face.
"I came to pick up the report," I spoke, and she nodded, moving quickly to get the papers.
I stood there with my arms crossed and then sighed.
"I thought you were back at Ryujin," I spoke loudly, making Rose flinch and something fall behind the wall just near my private room, and Asher walked out.
His shirt was all crumpled and hair messed up. He had a sheepish smile on his flushed face as he walked over and stood beside Rose.
"Ma-Master... Here..." she handed me the papers, and I looked at the two of them.
"We-We’re sorry, Master..." Rose spoke with her head down.
Asher also bowed his head, and I sighed.
"Don’t apologise," I said. "But this is a workplace. If you want some privacy, then get married, go home, and play around."
Their faces turned into tomatoes, and I smiled before I reached out and placed my forefinger over Asher’s forehead.
"And you, go talk to your family about this and fix your marriage date."
Asher closed his eyes, embarrassed, and then glanced at Rose before he nodded.
"Yes, Master."
"And you," I spoke, looking at Rose.
"Yes!"
"It was me today, so I waited—but next time, be careful," I chided, and she bowed ninety degrees.
"I’m really sorry, Master. We will never do such a thing here again."
I sighed, watching the two lovebirds before I turned to leave.
"I’ll take my leave then," I spoke and walked out.
I shook my head, running my hand through my hair as I made my way towards the sweets shop to pick something for Kai. But just as I was close to it, I sensed the presences in there again.
"These kids..."
I opened the door, and almost everyone inside flinched.
"I think I told you to go back," I spoke as I watched the three kids sitting before me with their mouths stuffed and the cold sweat running down the sides of their faces.
"Please don’t be angry, Master," Davian spoke up. "They all came out in town to get some sweets for their friends."
"They snuck out," I corrected as I walked in.
"Master!" Viny beamed as she saw me, and before I knew it, she and Gina hugged my arms from both sides.
"Don’t be so angry, Master!"
"Angry Master is also charming."
"It’s been so long, Master, don’t you miss us?"
I sighed as I tried to ignore them. "Not now, ladies. I must scold them."
"But they’re just kids, they also want to roam around and be rebellious," Sally said as she appeared with a box of sweets and placed it on the table.
The kids nodded as if agreeing with Sally, and I looked at Randall, who came up behind her with two more boxes.
"Randall would agree with me," I spoke, and he looked at me, making the three look at him.
"...I agree," he spoke, making the three pout.
"Not fair, Papa!"
"The kids need to be given freedom!"
"Yes, yes, this is a part of their growth."
The girls started chiding their father, and I sighed before I walked over to the kids who averted their eyes. Davian, who was sitting with them, looked at them once before he picked up a slice of the strawberry cake that they were having and presented it to me.
"Please have this and don’t be angry, Master," he beamed, making me sigh as I placed my hand over my eyes, too done to deal with this now.
