The Happy Farmer Wanderer-Chapter 246 A Farce_1
By the time Han Mei had not yet figured out a solution, the men of the village had already arrived.
Dozens of men of various heights and builds, armed with all sorts of makeshift weapons, blocked Han Mei’s doorway, shouting the names of their wives in a threatening manner.
"Sun Caili, get out here!"
"Hu Ping, come out dead or alive, if not, we’re getting divorced!"
Upon seeing this scene, Li Qing’s scalp tingled instantly.
Damn it all!
How could it happen right when they were all gathered at Han Mei’s place?
Li Qing hurried over, but before he could speak, Qin Wenjun had already walked out from the doorway.
Her haughty gaze swept over the crowd as she shouted harshly, "What are you trying to do? Rob someone’s house?"
"Disperse immediately, or I’ll call the police station right now!"
"Let my woman come out!" One man, swinging his stick, pointed at Qin Wenjun and yelled, "It’s you, you’re the one inciting them to do nothing, demanding damn equality, wanting freedom!"
"If you mess with my family again, believe it or not, I’ll kill you!"
The man’s fierce expression immediately terrified Qin Wenjun, "Your unhappy family is your own doing, what does it have to do with anyone else? If you had been nicer to the woman at home earlier, would she have argued with you, come crying to us? You should be looking for faults in yourself right now!"
"I’ll go ask your mom about faults!" The man’s eyes glared fiercely, and his vicious expression seemed as if he was about to murder someone, "Do you really think I wouldn’t dare kill you?"
"Ever since you arrived in this village, nothing good has happened, you’ve even turned it upside down, you jinx!"
"What do you mean? I’m also doing this for your own good, hoping to improve your quality of life!" Qin Wenjun shouted back, her voice firm but her insides quaking.
"Go to hell, shut your mouth!"
"Right, zip your damn mouth!"
Everyone roared in anger, encircling her.
Qin Wenjun, frightened by the furious scene, felt her legs go weak and hastily stepped back two paces.
Seeing this, Li Qing quickly stepped forward, spread his arms, and shouted, "Let’s all cool down for a second, can you listen to me for a moment?"
The men stopped at the sound, noticing it was Li Qing.
"Qingzi, you’ve come just in time."
Ding Shengwang squeezed beside Li Qing, "The village is depending on you this time. We can’t reason with the women at home, nor with this woman. You talk to them!"
The others immediately chimed in, speaking all at once.
"Qingzi, you try to persuade them first. If all else fails, I’ll divorce first, then slaughter this unscrupulous woman. They say it’s better to demolish ten temples than to destroy a marriage, but she just opens her mouth and breaks up dozens of families!"
"She truly lacks virtue!"
"Qingzi, your sister-in-law is also at the village hall right now; you help us make our point clear."
"If it really comes to it, I’ll fight this out in the county court!"
...
Li Qing couldn’t help but smile wryly, realizing for the first time that he actually had such great influence in the village.
Actually, if this hadn’t happened right at Han Mei’s doorstep, he really wouldn’t want to meddle.
This situation could end up being a mess all over him.
He raised his hand, signaling everyone to quiet down, then he walked toward Qin Wenjun.
"Village Chief Qin, you’ve already seen what’s happening, do you really want to continue with this?" Li Qing asked in a deep voice.
Qin Wenjun’s face was taut, her expression a mix of anxiety and grievance, "I truly did it for their own good!"
"The status of rural women is too low, there must be change!"
Li Qing hadn’t expected that this woman, even at this point, would still persist.
"The status of rural people is also too low, do you want to change that too?"
Qin Wenjun was sharply taken aback, her eyes filled with resentment as she stared fiercely at Li Qing.
Li Qing pointed toward the men outside, "Do you think it’s tiring for women to wash clothes, cook, mend, and take care of children all day? What about them? Aren’t they tired? The dirty and exhausting jobs are theirs, have they ever complained? In a family, there definitely needs to be a division of labor."
"You want to set them free, so are you going to do their household chores? Are you going to till the land? Are you going to provide for their living expenses?"
Qin Wenjun stared with her eyes wide, her mouth moving, but no words came out.
"If you still want a peaceful resolution, immediately persuade the women inside to go back with their men and then apologize to everyone!" Li Qing said sternly.
"Impossible!" Qin Wenjun shouted resolutely.
Li Qing took a step back, "Then it’s up to you."
"However, I’m asking you to leave my sister-in-law’s house now. This is not your office!"
"You!" Qin Wenjun’s face twisted with anger, tears rolling from her eyes.
She stomped her foot fiercely and turned to rush into the courtyard.
Shortly after, a group of women with uneasy expressions walked out from inside.
"Sun Meili, come home with me. If you cause any more trouble, I’ll break your damn legs!"
"Think I’m not good enough for you, that I’ve made you tired? Fine, from now on you can handle the children’s living expenses, I won’t!"
A group of men cursed in a cacophony, leading their women away one after another.
After the crowd had dispersed, Qin Wenjun also quickly left Han Mei’s home.
But this time, she lacked her usual lofty pride, her silhouette seeming somewhat disheveled.
"Qingzi, what do we do now?" Han Mei, standing next to Li Qing, asked nervously.
The recent events had clearly left her quite shaken.
"As long as there is no more of this nonsense, it should be over," Li Qing said with a light sigh, "The village women were impulsively stirred up by Qin Wenjun, causing a fuss, but in the end, they have to return to real life."
"They all have elders above and children below, they can’t possibly go about recklessly. The freedom they seek cannot be given by holding daily meetings, and certainly not by Qin Wenjun."
"Sister-in-law, you could argue with me and have hope, but they’re already beyond hope."
Han Mei, already nervous, suddenly felt annoyed at Li Qing’s words.
She pinched Li Qing hard at the waist and said, "But this mess... I feel very guilty now."
"Anyway, your job as a clerk won’t be easy after this. It’s certain that the men in the village will resent you along with Qin Wenjun. Unless you find a way to quickly change their attitude, which I doubt," Li Qing said, rubbing his forehead.
This whole mess was purely creating trouble for nothing.
"No, what I’m worried about is what if someone really becomes stubborn and doesn’t see reason, then what?" Han Mei asked anxiously.
"Then we find a way to persuade, what else can we do? Let Qin Wenjun deal with the trouble she caused!" Li Qing said.
