Chapter 302: Their Story

Emily had her gaze fixed on her hands as she couldn’t find the courage to look in Kaiden’s eyes as she told him about the dark past that she shared with his first mate. She wasn’t sure where it would lead her relationship with him, or if he would blame her after learning about what happened back then, but she had decided to tell him everything.

She was done with carrying the story with herself all alone for so many years, she wanted to finally reveal it to someone and he was the one person who deserved the most to know about what happened to Elisa.

"During my time there, I got to know that they were running a business of human trafficking and most of the people kidnapped were indeed humans, only Elisa and the people accompanying her were an exception." She stopped to take a deep breath before she continued.

"It was rumored that she and her companions were held captive because they tried to help some of the humans that were getting transported to brothels."

Kaiden remained silent as he listened to her story. "As you already know, our kidnappers were very powerful... powerful enough to keep dozens of shifters in shackles. Back then, I used to think that I was a normal human, so when they had me tied with silver chains and had me drink several experimental potions, I was so confused."

A shudder ran down her body at the thought of the silver chains that used to dig into her flesh till the point she would bleed and then one particular vampire used to visit her every night to lick all the blood from her wrists and ankles.

She wasn’t sure if she should be thankful that he never actually used his fangs on her, or she should just keep despising him for treating her like his pathetic snack. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t even realize that he was shivering at this point.

Kaiden’s arms were immediately around her, pulling her into his warm embrace that took away most of the bad feelings but she was still trapped in those memories.

"Who?" Kaiden suddenly asked, his voice raspy and filled with emotions that made her finally look up at him. "Who was he, angel? I promise I’ll kill him personally with my very own hands."

He seemed to have picked some parts of her memories as she was thinking about that particular vampire and now he was furious, his wolf ready to tear apart that vampire for what he had done to her.

Emily shook her head in response as she spoke, "He’s probably the only one among them I never saw unless he personally came to meet me. I also never heard anyone talking about him. He always wore a hooded cloak so I never got to see his face."

Kaiden kept his arm wrapped around her but didn’t speak. He too seemed to be lost in his thoughts.

"One day, we eventually came across each other. I’m no longer sure if it was just a coincidence or our fate but from the very first time she saw me, she kept saying some weird stuff about me being someone’s destiny."

Emily let out a chuckle as she shook her head at the thought of her first encounter with Elisa, "I was just a child with no family and was kidnapped by maniacs. And among them was her, who kept approaching me only to tell me that I should take care of someone special to her."

Kaiden looked into her eyes as he spoke, "Her mother was a sheer, so she too had those abilities. She probably saw your future with me when you two first met and... and she..."

"And she was probably aware of her end too." Emily finished what he was unable to say. "She was talking about you all the time but I was, of course, completely oblivious about your existence or the meaning of her words. So, I always ended up ignoring her. I never gave her the chance to speak to me and I used to avoid her all the time."

Kaiden gave her fingers a little squeeze but didn’t speak. He was allowing her to tell whatever she wanted at her own pace.

Emily closed her eyes to take in a deep breath. It was time for her to reveal the ultimate part of the story, the one that was the real reason behind her guilt and the reason she was scared of losing her mate.

Opening her eyes, she pulled her hand out of his warm hold before she spoke, "She... She died in front of my very eyes, Kaiden. They shot her dead with a silver bullet while she stood right in front of me."

Kaiden remained silent, probably absorbing the confession that she just made. It took him a while before he finally spoke, "Is this why you feel guilty? Because you saw her dying and were unable to do anything?" His voice was so low that it was hard for her to guess exactly what emotion he was feeling.

She brushed away the single tear that rolled down her cheek as she shook her head before replying, "I wish. If it had been like that, I would probably have succeeded in pulling myself out of that memory at some point in all these years. But the main reason for my guilt is... she died... she died while trying to rescue me... that was the last thing she wanted to do for you..."

Her voice started cracking by the end as she finally spoke out those words that she had kept hidden deep in her memories for over a decade.

More tears rolled down her cheeks as pain shook her heart from inside out. She was afraid to even look at him. She couldn’t even find it in herself to blame him if he chose to hate her after this.

After all, she was the reason behind the death of his first mate.
