The Billionaire's Rental Wife Is A Hot Shot-Chapter 16: Turning Tables
Chapter 16: Turning Tables
"How dare you slap my mother?!" Annabelle shouted, her eyes narrowing at the elegantly dressed woman. She just wanted to fuel her mom’s burning rage, and it worked. Sophia gritted her teeth and glared at the woman in front of her.
"And how dare you enter my house without permission and have the audacity to hit my daughter-in-law?" Rosalind Reign roared like a tigress, her intimidating voice making Annabelle squeak back like a scolded puppy.
Evelyn felt warmth spread through her body at Rosalind’s words, their eyes meeting briefly before Rosalind turned her gaze to Sophia. Avery almost squealed internally at her aunt’s arrival, knowing Rosalind was the perfect person to teach these nasty women a lesson.
"The truth is always bitter, Mrs. Wright. You better start accepting it like William accepted you." Rosalind’s words pierced through Sophia’s already burning ego. Pointing towards the door, she continued, "Now get out before I ask security to drag you out."
Sophia gritted her teeth, casting a final glance at Evelyn before storming out of the house. Annabelle and Felicia, who had fallen awfully silent at Rosalind’s entry, quickly followed her.
"And Agatha," Rosalind added, her loud voice carrying a hint of mockery, "make sure to put up a sign that says no dogs allowed on the main gates. It seems there are lots of strays roaming free in our society."
Avery couldn’t hold back her laughter, and even Evelyn broke into a smile at Rosalind’s boldness. Agatha, suppressing her laughter, replied loudly, "Yes, ma’am," playing along with her.
As they reached the pavement in front of the main door, Sophia stopped and turned around, her glare fixed on Evelyn. "You will pay for this, Evelyn. You will pay heavily!" she snarled before stomping out, followed by her two tails.
With her tall, statuesque figure and vibrant red hair, Rosalind Reign exuded a regal charm, looking nothing like a woman in her early fifties. Her sharp, piercing black eyes scanned the room, sending all the workers scurrying back to their stations before she looked at Evelyn.
"Are you alright?" she asked warmly, her voice now a gentle contrast to the fierceness she had displayed moments earlier. When Evelyn nodded, Rosalind quickly asked Agatha to get an ice pack.
"Rosie!" Avery opened her arms, a small pout forming on her lips, and hugged Rosalind tightly. "I missed you so much."
"Me too, darling!" Rosalind replied, lovingly patting her elder brother’s only daughter.
Evelyn, having heard of their closeness, smiled at their interaction. They all seated themselves on the couch, with Avery on Rosalind’s left, marveling at her earlier little show, while Evelyn sat silently on her right, unsure of how to interact with her. They had met a few times at Avery’s family events and never had any conversations except for small greetings.
Just then, Zevian rushed inside with Kiana being carried by her grandfather, Jonathan Reign. Evelyn quickly got up seeing the former king of Reign Constructions, a small smile playing on her lips as Kiana happily waved at her.
Zevian reached Evelyn with a few long strides, worry etched all over his face. Holding her hand, he inquired, "Are you okay?"
Evelyn nodded, pursing her lips. Agatha, who had walked back with an ice pack, passed it to her. Zevian took it on her behalf and gently guided her to sit on the couch adjacent to Rosalind. Checking if the temperature was okay by placing it on the back of his hand, he then pressed it gently against her reddened cheek, cursing himself for leaving her alone.
Evelyn took the ice pack from him and treated herself, feeling the heat rise up to her cheeks as everyone around them smiled at their intimacy. If the way Zevian acted was melting her heart, Jonathan’s weary gaze, sitting on the chair opposite them, kept her on her toes. She maintained some distance from Zevian, aware of the scrutiny she was under.
Silence enveloped the room for a few seconds, with even Avery, the chatterbox of the family, falling silent at Jonathan’s presence.
Agatha could feel the thick tension and decided to break it. Taking out a folded paper from her inner pocket, she turned to Kiana and smiled, "Miss Kiana, you left this in your bed."
Kiana’s face brightened at seeing the paper in her nanny’s hand. She quickly jumped from her grandpa’s lap and collected the letter before hesitantly standing in front of Evelyn.
Evelyn, who was excited to see Kiana, exchanged a worried glance with Zevian as the little girl looked rather anxious. Zevian assured her with a nod, their attention turning back to Kiana, who slowly passed the paper to Evelyn.
"I wanted to give you this," Kiana murmured, her little eyes twinkling with joy. Even though her aunt Avery had reassured her many times, she was quite anxious about whether Evelyn would become her mommy and had fallen asleep quite early last night waiting for them. Now that her dream had come true, she couldn’t hold back her tears.
Evelyn opened the paper to see a big red heart drawn in the center, with two little stick figures holding each other’s hands inside it. Below it, a quote in blue crayon was written saying, "Thank you for becoming my mommy, Evelyn. I hope we can be the best mommy-daughter duo."
A chuckle escaped Evelyn’s mouth as she noticed the misspellings and a few words written incorrectly. It only made the letter cuter and more heartwarming. Looking at Kiana, she replied, "Aww, this is so sweet. Thank you, baby."
"Come here," Evelyn opened her arms, and the little girl’s teary eyes widened before she pounced into Evelyn’s embrace.
Even Avery couldn’t help but tear up as Kiana started to gently sob in her best friend’s arms. Though Zevian had done his best to provide unconditional love, Avery knew how much Kiana missed having a motherly figure. And there was no better person than Evelyn to fill that role, becoming the sweetest step-mom for this little devil.
Evelyn smiled and gently patted Kiana’s head. Breaking the hug, she wiped her tears and tried to cheer her up, "And thank you for becoming my daughter, sweetheart." Adjusting her bangs sticking to her cheeks, she continued, "You know what, best is boring. So let’s try to be the coolest mom-daughter duo."
"Really?" Kiana asked, wiping her nose with her sleeve. A giggle left her mouth when Evelyn nodded, and she hugged her new mommy again.
Even Rosalind broke into a smile seeing them bond so quickly, feeling a little relieved that Evelyn didn’t see Kiana as a burden. Her son had indeed made the right decision.
"You better treat her well. If not, I will make sure to crash your little deal," Jonathan warned, his tone cruel.
"Ah, he always spoils the moment," Rosalind muttered under her breath, glaring at her husband, who simply stared back at her.
Evelyn, a little surprised that they knew about their marriage contract, composed herself and nodded. It felt right that Zevian had informed his parents, trying to lift her burden of pretending in front of them.
With a small smile, she replied, "I will try my best, sir."
Rosalind smiled at her honesty and glared at her husband, warning him to put a period. She happily chatted with Evelyn about Kiana, slowly easing the atmosphere around them. freewebnøvel.coɱ
But the calm was short-lived when Avery’s phone rang. As she opened the notification, she couldn’t help but curse, "This bitch!"
Everyone turned to her in confusion, and showing her phone, she informed, "Annabelle is crying on her livestream. She is claiming that it was Evelyn who had spiked the drinks and tried to sell her to Nicholas in exchange for his shares."
