Chapter 20: A Kiss Gone Wrong

Rivana finished the last scoop of her ice cream, the smile still bright on her face. Azrael had even made sure to top it with a generous amount of colorful sprinkles—something she used to love as a child. He might have remembered it from the countless times she had bothered him to do so.

And was he really going to watch cartoons with her?! Rivana wondered with a silly smile, the spoon still in her mouth. Again, Azrael might be doing it just because of the earlier accident. But still, her heart couldn’t stop feeling all giddy.

"Get a hold of yourself!" Her rational side chided, wanting her to act mature, as they had barely been married for two days now. But Rivana couldn’t help it, feeling the heavens had helped her to mend her long-broken friendship with him.

She took out the spoon and glanced over at the study where the two men had disappeared earlier. It was already past 10 PM, and her body protested for sleep, but she stubbornly stayed awake, waiting for Azrael.

A few minutes later, Azrael walked out with Callum following behind him with his usual scowl. Rivana blinked away her sleepiness and stood up, her smile softening Azrael’s dark expression.

"There are a few things we need to discuss first," Callum broke her excitement. He gestured for her to sit back down, and as she did, he took the chair across from her while Azrael settled beside her.

"Let’s talk about the accident first," Callum began, opening a video on the laptop. Turning to her, he continued, "The people who were chasing you and the ones who planned the explosion seem to be different."

Rivana leaned forward, watching the video. A masked man, cloaked in black, approached her car, which she had parked in front of her company building. Looking around cautiously, he pulled out a small device and attached it under her car.

"He put an incendiary device that caught fire during your race," Callum explained, flipping to pictures of the next incident. "Later, he threw kerosene to destroy the car completely. Luckily, you escaped just in time."

Rivana’s breath hitched as she looked at the images. The intentions were clear: they wanted her burned alive. But who hated her so much to go to such extremes? Her mind raced with possibilities, but she couldn’t pinpoint onto one.

Azrael’s jaw clenched, his eyes boring into the screen. He’d seen it several times already, but his rage to burn the bastard alive only intensified. Sensing Rivana slipping into distress, he eyed Callum, who quickly changed the slide.

"And the car that was chasing you," Callum showed the three-car chasing pictures. Moving to another of the four men being forced to kneel, he added, "We have already caught them. But the masked man is still being tracked."

Closing the laptop, Callum ended, "Since you are a target for many shadows, take a bodyguard with you every time you leave the house. I have already arranged for one; she will greet you tomorrow."

Rivana nodded, a soft smile tugging at her lips. Many seemed to be after her life, but having Azrael beside her gave her a sense of comfort.

Feeling her gaze, Azrael turned to her. A small smile lit up his face, the darkness in his eyes softening slightly. Rivana’s heart raced while Callum felt like he couldn’t handle it anymore. He needed a lot of time to adjust to this tender side of Azrael.

"And your movie is ready in the TV lounge," Callum grumbled, pushing his hands away. "Leave now!"

Azrael got up from the couch and said, "Let’s go." Rivana nodded and, wishing Callum a good night, she followed behind her husband.

As they entered the TV lounge, Rivana’s eyes widened in surprise. The large TV screen took up one wall, while a plush, beige, oversized couch sat opposite it. Soft lighting and elegant decor made the room feel warm and cozy.

Azrael went to watch the movie while Rivana sat on the couch. Soon, the butler walked in with a few snacks as ordered by Callum.

"Thanks, George," Rivana smiled at him as he placed it on the coffee table in front of her.

Once the lights were dimmed and the movie played, Azrael walked and sat beside Rivana. Silence filled for a few seconds before the movie started to play. But she couldn’t concentrate on her once-favorite movie, all her thoughts focused on the man beside her. Her heart raced with a mix of emotions: joy, excitement, and the nostalgic feeling of watching a movie with him again after so long.

Azrael would be the first person her younger self would reach out to if she wanted something. He would easily surrender to her stubbornness, fulfilling her silly requests.

"Yayy! That’s why Ray Ray is my favorite person!" She would sugarcoat and cling to his arm tightly, making Azrael sigh at her play.

Susshanah would laugh out loud at such incidents, pleased to see that someone could annoy her son, just as much as he troubled everyone in the Hugon Mansion.

Rivana was so lost in the memories that she didn’t notice her favorite person was currently looking at her. Suddenly, he leaned closer, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"Wh-what are you doing?" Rivana stammered, leaning back into the couch to create distance. Azrael paused and looked at her, their faces mere inches apart.

Rivana’s heart skipped a beat, her eyes locking into the spell his midnight eyes held. They traveled down to his sharp nose, landing on his soft, perfectly sculpted lips. The natural pink hue of his lips contrasted beautifully with his fair complexion, their inviting shape making her gulp subconsciously.

Azrael broke the gaze, his eyes falling to the handrest of the couch. Rivana followed his gaze and saw the soft blue blanket. Ah, so he was just reaching for the blanket? A sigh escaped her lips, a blush creeping as his face printed itself in her mind.

Azrael took the soft blue throw and gently draped it over her legs. Rivana’s heart warmed at his gesture, heat racing up to her cheeks again as his fingers brushed against her thighs. Why the heck was he acting this way? Couldn’t he just continue to be cold, detached like he was after taken away his uncle?

"Thank you," Rivana confessed, looking up at him.

Azrael smiled before turning back to the screen.

But Rivana wasn’t done yet and continued, "No, I mean thank you for everything." Considering how she had been a burden rather than anything useful, he should have broken the contract and found someone more fitting for the role.

When he looked at her, Rivana joked, "If it were someone else, they would have already divorced and thrown me out."

Her words caused Azrael to grit his teeth. Meeting her gaze, he replied firmly, "I would never divorce you, Rain." Rivana felt a chill run down her spine, his voice intimidating. But his next words surprised her even more.

"I would never divorce you unless you want it."

Rivana looked at him in disbelief. Memories of how Viktor had how he had tied her to their marriage, even after she found out Rubina was pregnant, flooded in. He had used Alan, her baby, and his treatment to blackmail her, only to throw the poor child away once he was no longer useful.

"W-why?" Rivana asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She wanted to know the reason! Why did he care so much?! Why was he treating this contract as if it were a real marriage?

Azrael sighed deeply, his gaze dropping to his hands. The thought of letting her go again unsettled him. Frustration and longing mixed in his chest. Closing his eyes, he replied, "Because I don’t want to tie and torture you in an unhappy marriage."

Rivana felt a warmth spread through her entire body at his words. The once-annoying son of her favorite Aunt Sussy had turned into a completely different person. He wasn’t grumpy and was very sweet to her!

’Aww, he’s so sweet. Kiss Him!’ Her inner voice screamed. The devil on her shoulder shut her rational side down, urging her, ’Just kiss him already!’

In the past, Rivana had always done it whenever he would help her out of a mess, pecking his cheek even if he hated it and tried to push her away. Without thinking, Rivana leaned in, her old, silly self resurfacing once more.

But just as her lips neared his cheek, Azrael suddenly turned around, feeling her move. And instead of his cheek, Rivana’s lips landed on his soft lips, capturing them in a sweet, accidental kiss.
