Saving the Heartthrob Frenemy-Chapter 47: "Who did you do it for?"
Qie Xieling had never had to think about anything seriously. In the past, his father would put him in time out and there was no self-reflection at all. He was either thinking about what for dinner or making up a story in his mind. But today his dad’s face when he said that made him feel so bad that he couldn’t help but self-reflect.
He stood facing the wall with a serious face while nervously rubbing his thumb with his index finger.
Qie Ranzhe glanced down at those fingers and sighed. He knew that if he spoke to his son it would violate the time-out order.
He stood up and turned the oven timer to eighteen minutes since two minutes had already passed on Qie Xieling’s time out.
"When this rings come upstairs to our bedroom so we can talk about it," he said before turning to leave.
Qie Xieling nodded his head but his face remained fixed to the wall.
Qie Ranzhe dashed upstairs and opened the bedroom door but his husband wasn’t there. He was about to go out and check elsewhere when he heard the water running in the bathroom.
His smile grew bigger as he pushed the door open. Wen Qinxi was standing in front of the mirror patting dry his face after having washed it.
Qie Ranzhe embraced Wen Qinxi from behind and rested his head on his shoulder blade. The two of them didn’t speak for a while with Qie Ranzhe greedily sniffing the pleasant familiar scent coming from Wen Qinxi’s body. With a content expression, he whispered, "Are you okay?"
Wen Qinxi sighed as he put his hands down while staring at him from the corner of his eye. "No, I am not. What if he got hurt? He could have blown off his fingers."
Qie Ranzhe could understand his frustration and he was quite anxious as well when he heard about it but probably not as anxious as Wen Qinxi.
"I know... just don’t be too angry, okay? I am afraid you will be too furious to sleep tonight," he replied while staring into Wen Qinxi’s eyes in the mirror. Wen Qinxi placed his hand over Qie Ranzhe’s and showed a subtle smile.
Meanwhile, Qie Xieling couldn’t stand the loud ticking of the oven timer. He couldn’t even focus on what he was going to say to his dad later. He kept trying to come up with heartfelt answers but the ticking was so annoying.
Just when he got his wits together the timer set off and his time out was over. His shoulder relaxed but his breath was still caught in his throat.
Rubbing his sweaty palms he walked slowly like a student who wasn’t prepared for the exam despite having plenty of time to prepare.
Qie Xieling knocked at the door softly hoping that the two of them were asleep. The longer they took to open the door the more hopeful he was. He was about to knock one more time when the door was opened.
Qie Xieling screamed internally but put on a calm facade as he walked into the bedroom.
His father was lying on the bed with his back on the headboard of the bed while his dad was sitting at the corner of the bed watching him.
Wen Qinxi gestured at the couch and said, "Sit."
Qie Xieling nervously rubbed his sweaty palms on his pants suit as he sat down.
Wen Qinxi folded his arms across his chest and asked the same question again. "Anything interesting happened today at the dance?"
Qie Xieling knew this was coming already but he still felt a sharp ping in his stomach.
He licked his dry lips before saying, "Yes... there were fireworks which I set off."
Qie Ranzhe showed a satisfied smile as he rest his arm on the back of his head. This was his way of encouraging his son. Yes, it was a cheat code but the faster his husband forgives his son the earlier he might get laid. Selfish yes but he was pretty sure he had blue balls from ending things without finishing them.
"Why did you do it?" asked Wen Qinxi and Qie Xieling really had no wholesome answer.
"Firstly, I did it because I thought it would be fun. I just thought others would like it so I," he said but the more he spoke the more he felt like something was wrong. He couldn’t fathom why fireworks of all things. What was he thinking?
Any other prank would have sufficed and it wouldn’t have taken so much energy. But for two weeks he plotted seriously and even owed his grandma a favour so he could get early spring festival money.
Instead, his grandma gave him money that wasn’t an advance to the spring festival but he had to dress up like a little girl and join both grandmas at the nana and granddaughter tea party. After all that trouble how could his reason for doing this be that simple?
Wen Qinxi saw that he was seriously thinking so he patiently waited. Four minutes later Qie Xieling’s brow furrowed. He remembered someone in class mentioning how beautiful the end of the dance would be if they had fireworks. That would make the entire thing worth it.
"Who did you do it for?" asked Wen Qinxi after noticing the entanglement on his face.
Qie Ranzhe who had been relaxed just now suddenly sat up seeming very interested and because he jolted up so fast he made a loud noise. The pair of dad and son looked at him with a look of confusion.
"Oh um, carry on I am listening," he said but his heart was already feeling ill at ease. One of the major reasons he did foolish things that would get him in trouble was because he was trying to impress someone. The only person he deemed worthy to impress was sitting right there.
If the conjecture here was Qie Xieling was just like him then who did he do this stupid thing for? Qie Ranzhe wanted to know so badly that he wished he could interrogate him himself.
Qie Xieling kind of felt like his father was looking at him weirdly like if he said the wrong answer he would be kicked out of the house. He smiled nervously while saying, "I really did it for no one specific. I felt like this would be the perfect farewell to all my classmates because some of them aren’t going to the same high school as me."
