Chapter 23: Chapter 23 - The Blood Dagger

"You got this from the Royal Vault?" Seraphina asked me with a huge frown on her face. "That old geezer actually let you enter there?"

She was shocked. She couldn’t believe that a nobody like me had been given access to the insides of the Royal Vault and even granted the right to take one item out of it. Still, what shocked her the most wasn’t the fact that I got in; it was the item that I now had, the Blood Dagger.

Ever since I had shown it to her, she had been completely mind-blown by it. It had reached the point where she could hardly believe her own two eyes.

"That dagger. Do you know its origins?" she asked with a frown.

I did know a little about it because of the system’s new function: Analysis. However, it had barely mentioned anything. It had only told me that it was from a forgotten blood cult, not from vampires, but a cult.

I found it weird back then, but it was nothing more than a worry in vain. I actually thought much of it, but based on her reaction, it seemed there was a lot more to it. If an 8th Mana Circle Mage was having such a reaction, it had to be important.

"Not really, no. Why?" I replied, lying a little.

"Can I?" she asked as she brought her hands closer to the dagger, trying to hold it.

I let go of it, allowing her to touch it as she began to observe it for the next few seconds, making sure that she analyzed every single detail about it.

"This aura... I’ve heard of it before. If I’m not wrong, this dagger might come from another time. Maybe thousands of years from now."

"Aura? What do you mean?"

"That thick, bloody aura. Can’t you feel it? I’ve read about it in books. It’s said to belong to a race that was eradicated a long time ago by the current Royal Family. Not much is said about them in history books. However, one thing is certain: they were fierce and powerful enough to rival the Royal Family." She frowned as she began swinging it around. "I’d have to get a closer look to find out about its abilities. But one thing is for sure: you got your hands on a very dangerous weapon, young man."

I wasn’t about to tell her that I knew of its abilities, but there was no doubt that it was powerful. However, what interested me more than the dagger was the history surrounding that forgotten race.

"Why were they eradicated?"

She shrugged. "My guess is that they were too much of a threat to be left alive."

"But blood? Isn’t that what vampires are best at?"

She nodded. "Yes, but this isn’t the energy that you can find in weapons linked to vampires. It’s more... ancient... more... powerful from the looks of it. It’s hard to describe, but as you become more powerful, you will be able to tell them apart."

I nodded, trusting her words.

"Those books about this race—where exactly did you get them?"

She laughed. "I found them inside your next destination: the Royal Academy. The place where you can learn about everything that ever happened in this world. They can be found in the Royal Library located inside of it. Normally, it would take a long time before you earned the credentials to read such things—maybe a year or two. But since you are the princess’s fiancé, you might be able to find a way around that... not that I’m giving you any ideas."

This forgotten race might be one of my best clues to becoming powerful enough to deal with the threat heading for this world ten years from now.

Hypnotizing people is useful, but I need to become stronger myself.

The princess was useful in that, but it’s still far from enough. I’ll have to become much stronger for whatever is heading in the direction of this world.

Getting that information and reaching the 10th Mana Circle might be the best way of doing so.

However, before thinking of such things, I needed to keep myself grounded, and that started with the tournament that would be beginning in a few hours.

Nevertheless, instead of having some fun with Elena tonight, I thought it would be better to learn how to use a dagger.

"Can I try something?" I asked Seraphina as I wanted to test one of its effects.

She frowned at first but ended up nodding. "Sure, go for it."

"It might hurt a little."

I got closer to her and brought the dagger close to her hand, sliding it across her skin and making her bleed slightly. However, at that very same moment, information entered my mind—all of which regarded Seraphina.

I could hear her heartbeat, the blood pumping from her chest. I could feel the way she would be moving next. I could sense her intent, which was neutral for the moment.

I wasn’t sure of it, but I had a feeling that with all those small bits of information, there would be absolutely no way for her to even graze me.

"Try attacking me now," I said coldly as I took a few steps back.

Seraphina frowned a little but listened. She began gathering a small amount of mana around her right palm to form a fireball. But before it even appeared, I could see in my mind the trajectory of the fireball.

Before she even threw it, I had already moved out of the way, making her miss.

"H-How?" Her eyes widened.

She couldn’t even begin to understand how I had managed such a thing.

She formed another fireball, and this time she focused and tried to really hit me. But once more, before the fireball even left her hand, I was already long gone.

"How are you able to dodge everything I’m sending your way?" freēwēbnovel.com

In the back of my mind, I could feel her heart pumping more and more blood.

Seraphina was getting more and more excited by the minute.

And then a message from the system appeared before me.
