Chapter 68: Chapter 68: What’s a Single Dog Laughing At?

Mortimer Quincy was leaning in too close. The warmth of his breath washed over her face, and Holly Winslow suspected that if she said yes, he might actually kiss her.

"..."

Just then, the warning bell for class rang.

Mortimer Quincy lazily sat up straight. He went back to his own desk, pulled out his English textbook, and then sat back down next to Holly Winslow.

The abandoned Zeke Zane instinctively turned his head to see where Mortimer Quincy was going. A second later, he whipped his head back around. "..."

Mortimer Quincy swapped his English textbook with Holly Winslow’s, flipped it open to the first page, and signed his name, Mortimer Quincy, right below hers.

He even drew a heart, encircling both of their names.

Holly Winslow: "..."

’I want to throw away this obnoxiously flirty and childish husband.’

The other students in the classroom kept glancing in their direction. She lowered her voice and asked, "Mortimer Quincy, aren’t you going back to your seat for class?"

Mortimer Quincy raised an eyebrow. "Are you trying to get rid of me?" he asked, his voice low and husky with a magnetic quality.

"I’m not leaving. I’m not leaving."

Holly Winslow: "..."

She picked up her pen and playfully wrote "I am a pig" in Mortimer Quincy’s English book, even adding a drawing of a pig’s head.

The pig’s head was surprisingly well-drawn.

’Adorable.’

Mortimer Quincy couldn’t help but smile. "Go ahead and draw. After class, I’ll let you draw in my other books too."

Holly Winslow: "..."

Just then, the English teacher, Eileen Webb, entered the classroom. She glanced at the "cousins" in the back row and said with a smile, "Ah, the new student is here. Welcome. I’m your English teacher, Eileen Webb. You can call me Mr. Webb or Lin."

"I’ve seen your final exam paper. It’s very impressive that you got a perfect score."

Upon hearing "perfect score," the entire class let out an impressed "Whoa!" and turned to look in Holly Winslow’s direction.

There were two or three science students who could get a perfect score in math, but besides Mortimer Quincy, no one had ever gotten a perfect score in English. It was rare for anyone to even score above 130.

Holly Winslow obediently stood up and replied to Eileen Webb, "Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Webb. My name is Holly Winslow." As she spoke, someone took hold of her hand hanging beneath the desk.

"..."

She tugged twice but couldn’t pull her hand back. She shot a certain someone a glare, signaling for him to let go.

Eileen Webb didn’t seem to notice anything and kindly told her to sit. "Alright, have a seat. Let’s get right into today’s lesson. Everyone, please turn to the vocabulary list. I’ll start by having you all pronounce the words."

Mortimer Quincy glanced over at Holly Winslow four or five times. She was dutifully following the teacher and repeating the English words.

’So well-behaved.’

He couldn’t help but smile and then started reading along as well.

Beneath the desk, their two hands remained clasped together.

Ten minutes later, Eileen Webb began her routine of calling on students to read the vocabulary. Her gaze swept across the classroom, and she decided to give the new student a chance to shine. "Let’s start with Holly Winslow and move to the left. Each of you will read five words."

Startled at being called on, Holly Winslow hastily yanked her right hand back. She then stood up, textbook in hand, her pronunciation flawless. "Characteristic, radium..."

A smile appeared on Eileen Webb’s face as she watched her. ’Not bad at all.’

Mortimer Quincy was next. The young man’s voice was deep. "Conclude... conclusion."

Eileen Webb knew his English had always been excellent, so she wasn’t as surprised as she had been with Holly Winslow.

After sitting down, Mortimer Quincy naturally reached for his wife’s hand again, but he missed. A glance out of the corner of his eye showed that his wife had placed both of her hands on top of her desk.

Holly Winslow tilted her head and blinked at him, as if to say, ’Go on. Try and grab them now, if you dare.’

Mortimer Quincy: "..."

’My wife’s gotten naughty now. Won’t let me kiss her, won’t let me hold her hand.’

The third student continued reading. The students who followed were a far cry from the "puppy-love couple" who went before them.

When it was Pantheon’s turn, he pronounced "pollute" as "po-loo-teh," a clear sign he was memorizing the word using Chinese phonetic stand-ins.

That, combined with his strange accent, was hilarious.

Holly Winslow couldn’t hold it in and let out an uncharitable laugh. She wasn’t the only one; the entire class was laughing.

Pantheon, completely used to this kind of "encouragement by laughter" from his peers, shamelessly continued reading down the list.

Eileen Webb summarized their performance. "Holly Winslow and Mortimer Quincy were both excellent. The rest of you were a bit lacking, especially Pantheon. Your math grades are so high, but your English is so poor. Are you trying to sabotage my class?" she asked with a laugh. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Pantheon chuckled. "Mr. Webb, it’s not me sabotaging your class. It’s English that’s sabotaging me."

Eileen Webb laughed. "If you put that glib tongue of yours toward studying English, getting a perfect score would be no problem at all."

Forty minutes passed by in a flash.

After the second period, the bell for the morning exercise assembly rang. The students began to change into their school uniforms. Mortimer Quincy took off his windbreaker, revealing the blue-and-white uniform he wore underneath.

Holly Winslow didn’t have her uniform yet, so she didn’t need to change. She stood to the side, watching Mortimer Quincy straighten his uniform.

’In his uniform, that guy Mortimer Quincy looked so clean-cut and handsome, just like a well-behaved model student.’

’No, that’s not right. More like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.’

Mortimer Quincy met her gaze and raised an eyebrow, then glanced at her chest. "No school ID?"

That reminded Holly Winslow, and she quickly fumbled for it. Just as she was about to put it on, a hand took the ID badge from her and placed the lanyard around her neck.

Mortimer Quincy seized the opportunity to glance at her photo. Her face was a little round and chubby in it. He leaned in and chuckled, "My wife is so cute when she’s chubby."

That picture was from her first year of high school, and she had been a little chubby back then. Holly Winslow pouted and retorted, "You’re the chubby one! You’re the chubbiest, Quincy the Puppy!" With that, she followed the other students out of the classroom.

Mortimer Quincy raised an eyebrow and strode after her. He reached out, tugged on her sleeve, and leaned down to placate her. "Okay, okay. Quincy the Puppy is the chubbiest."

Zeke Zane and Pantheon, trailing behind them: "..."

’Teacher, we want to file a report! Someone here is openly engaging in puppy love!’

The second-year honors class assembled in the area closest to the stage. There were only eight girls in the class, and they formed a single row. Holly Winslow stood at the very end, her pale yellow sweatshirt conspicuous in the sea of school uniforms.

The boy leading their class formation at the front was also conspicuous—Scholar Quincy.

Each class had one person standing out in front.

A few minutes later, she realized they were there to inspect everyone’s ID badges and uniform compliance.

Mortimer Quincy started his inspection with the first girl in the line, moving so quickly that he reached Holly Winslow in just a dozen seconds.

He stopped in front of her and called out softly, "Holly."

Holly Winslow, thinking she must have violated some rule, grew nervous and whispered, "What’s wrong?"

"Nothing." The corner of Mortimer Quincy’s mouth quirked up, and he moved on to inspect the other students.

A thoroughly teased Holly Winslow: "..."

The dean of students went from class to class, taking notes in a ledger before deducting points from each class’s overall score for any infractions.

When he reached the honors class, he glanced at Holly Winslow and quickly moved on.

...

By the end of the morning, word had spread to the neighboring classes that a new girl had joined the honors class. She was supposedly Mortimer Quincy’s cousin, beautiful and radiant—even more so than the grade’s reigning beauty, Valerie Walsh.

Many students came by the honors classroom to sneak a peek, but they were all blocked and turned away by the boys in the class.

’The honors class only has eight girls in total. We can’t just let some other class get lucky.’

Any feeling of being a stranger at the new school had already vanished, thanks to Scholar Quincy. Holly Winslow took a pink lunch box from her bag, handed it to Mortimer Quincy, and ordered him with a beaming smile, "Go get our food. I want shredded potatoes."

Seeing the pink lunch box in Mortimer Quincy’s hand, Pantheon let out an unsympathetic laugh. "HAHAHA."

Zeke Zane: "..."

’He couldn’t believe Pantheon. What right did a single guy like him have to laugh?’

Mortimer Quincy shot Pantheon a look, raised an eyebrow, and said, enunciating each word, "What’s a single dog like you laughing at?"

Pantheon: "..."

’Damn it!’
