The Billionaire Stands Up for Me-Chapter 180: Pregnant
Calvin Yance and Cherry took me to the hospital room.
It was a spacious and luxurious family room.
"Ms. Lily, I’ll stay with you tonight." Seeing the accompanying bed nearby, Cherry immediately said.
I frowned and said without hesitation, "No need, I’m not bedridden, I can manage on my own. Besides, maybe I can be discharged this afternoon."
In my heart, I still didn’t want to stay in the hospital.
Especially after running into Daniel Carter in the corridor earlier, it made me even more resistant to being here.
I was afraid if I stayed, I might run into him again.
Then, with his cold and indifferent attitude as if we were strangers, my heart would shatter into pieces again.
What I feared more—
Worried that in my weakened state during illness, if I met him again, I would involuntarily show weakness, start a conversation, and try to hold onto him.
If that happened, our relationship would become even more tangled.
That’s why I was praying that when the test results came out, I’d be fine and could be discharged immediately.
"President Yance, I’m afraid I’ll trouble you to manage the company. Cherry accompanying me here is enough, you should head back." I lay down on the hospital bed and gently suggested to Calvin Yance that he should leave.
Calvin Yance looked at me, as if he had something to say, but after a moment of silence, he nodded, "Okay, I’ll head back first. If you need any help, have Cherry call me."
"Mm, thank you. You’ve been a great help today."
Since the last time we clarified things between us, he has been noticeably more distant from me.
But today, when I unexpectedly fainted and he brought me to the hospital, attentive as ever, I felt like his care for me had resurfaced.
So, I could only subtly express my stance once again.
Calvin Yance turned and left, and I felt somewhat relaxed.
Having someone of the opposite sex around always makes one a bit uneasy.
Cherry stared at the hospital room’s doorway, and after retracting her gaze, she looked at me and whispered, "President Yance indeed has intentions towards you. Ever since you broke up with Mr. Carter, his gaze at you has become bolder."
I was slightly surprised, "Is it that obvious?"
"Yes!"
I thought to myself, fortunately, we clarified things early on.
Cherry’s eyes twinkled, "Ms. Lily, actually, you could try accepting President Yance. Everyone is in the same industry, sharing interests, it could be great."
I gave her a cold glance, pretending to have the authority of a boss, "You’ve become bold recently, daring to meddle in matchmaking."
Cherry shivered in fright and immediately apologized. After a while, she indignantly said, "I just thought about meeting Mr. Carter earlier. He clearly saw you in a wheelchair, knowing you might be ill or unwell, and he didn’t even show a bit of concern, just walked away coldly. I just—"
Cherry became more and more indignant, secretly gritting her teeth, feeling extremely dissatisfied.
"I just feel like you should quickly date someone else to make him nervous, to see if he truly doesn’t care anymore!"
"Childish!" I scolded, then exhaled gently after lying down, calmly saying, "Being strangers is the best arrangement. If it’s on-again-off-again, it would be unbearable."
Cherry sighed helplessly, "I just can’t accept it, clearly so in love, so compatible."
I closed my eyes, pretending to sleep, giving no further response.
Love, compatibility, in the face of companionship, is all but fleeting clouds.
The ability to hold onto each other is the true sign of love and compatibility.
I initially intended to just close my eyes for a light nap, but I ended up really falling asleep.
After an unknown amount of time, Cherry woke me up.
"What’s the matter? Can I be discharged?" I asked as soon as I opened my eyes.
Cherry shook her head, "No, the doctor is here."
I quickly turned over, and sure enough, two doctors in white coats came in.
"Miss Miller, here is your test report." The doctor handed me the report and, before I could clearly see what was written on it, stated astonishingly, "You’re pregnant, and your fainting might be related to your body’s initial discomfort during early pregnancy."
My ears buzzed, and my mind felt struck by lightning!
I didn’t even have time to clearly see what was written on the report, and just stared at the doctor in shock, "What did you say? I’m pregnant?"
"Yes, it’s an early pregnancy. However, your health isn’t too good, with high blood pressure, anemia, and elevated cholesterol—is it because of late nights and overworking? This physical condition isn’t ideal for nurturing a new life. If you plan to keep the child, you’ll need to take better care of your health. If not, I’d recommend a timely abortion followed by proper rest."
The doctor was quick and efficient, not waiting for me to digest the earth-shattering news before rattling off instructions.
Thankfully, Cherry was quick on her feet.
She must have noticed my confusion and got up to talk to the doctor, "Can we take some time to think it over before making a decision?"
"Sure, rest for now. There will be other tests later," the doctor left with a few reminders before exiting.
"Ms. Lily, Ms. Lily?" Cherry called to me a few times, and when I didn’t respond, she had to nudge me.
Only then did I come back to my senses.
"Cherry, did you hear what the doctor said?" I looked at her blankly, slowly asking word by word.
"I heard it." Cherry grasped my arm tightly, "Ms. Lily, you’re pregnant."
She paused for a moment before continuing, "The child... it’s Mr. Carter’s, right?"
A buzzing filled my mind again, as I suddenly realized who the father of the child was.
Other than Daniel Carter, there was no one else.
How ridiculous.
Daniel and I painstakingly broke up, and now we don’t even greet each other, yet fate plays such a big joke—placing a new life inside me.
A new life from Daniel Carter and me.
"How is it possible..." I muttered, recalling the few times we were intimate, we took precautions.
As I sifted through memories, it suddenly dawned on me—on the night we broke up, things got too wild.
We ran out of protection and went at it bare at the end.
But such a chance—seems too improbable.
"Of course, it’s possible. No birth control method is 100% effective," Cherry said, blushing and speaking softly.
I looked at her, feeling extremely uneasy.
After being with Adrian Gordon for over six years, we never crossed that line.
But after being with Daniel Carter for only two months, I ended up carrying his child.
How would others view this?
I started to feel troubled, wondering what to do.
Daniel and I are in the same city, constantly running into each other at various occasions. If I keep this child, eventually he will find out.
At that time, who knows how chaotic the situation will become.
Would the sort of "battle for the child," or "privileges through motherhood," or abandoning the mother but keeping the child that’s depicted in dramas happen to me too?
But if I abort this child...
Just entertaining the thought filled me with reluctance.
Although he’s only been in my body for a few days, although I just found out about his existence, I already instinctively believe—I can’t possibly abort him!
I never imagined I’d fall in love again, never imagined being with another man.
If I could have a child, and such excellent genes at that, I would be truly overjoyed! I feel this is a gift from heaven, a grand blessing!
"Cherry, this news must remain secret, understood?" I suddenly looked at Cherry, solemnly urging her.
Cherry frowned, "Ms. Lily, don’t you want Mr. Carter to know? But this is such a big matter..."
"Keep it a secret!" I interrupted her before she finished speaking, emphasizing once more.
She closed her mouth immediately and stopped talking.
"What did the doctor say is wrong with my body?" After deciding to keep this little life, I instantly went into motherhood mode.
I want to nurture a healthy life, so naturally, I need to take good care of my body.
I was too shocked earlier, my mind short-circuited, and I couldn’t clearly hear what the doctor said.
Cherry said, "You’ve been fatigued recently, not getting enough rest. The doctor said you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and anemia..."
"Alright, I need to sleep well. Get me a big meal. I want to eat after I wake up."
After saying this, I turned over, lay down, and closed my eyes to continue sleeping.
Cherry must think I’m a bit strange, but I couldn’t be bothered; I just wanted to immerse myself in my own world and savor the joy of soon becoming a mother.
In the bed, I covered my abdomen with one hand, already beginning to envision the scene when the child is born.
Later that day, the doctor came over again.
By then, I had calmed down.
I listened to the doctor’s words very attentively, asking carefully how to nurse my body, how to safeguard the pregnancy.
Upon learning that I wanted to keep the child, the doctor was very responsible, advising me to go to the obstetrics department for a check-up later, where they would give more detailed pregnancy guidance.
Initially, I was thinking of leaving the hospital as soon as possible, but now I’m not in a rush.
I’ll stay for a couple more days, until I’m sure my body is fine, sure that the little sprout inside is healthy, then it’s not too late to leave.
In the evening, I let Cherry go home.
She’s just helping me out, not like she’s signed a contract to sell herself.
I can take care of myself.
At night, Grace chatted with me on WeChat and sent her flight information.
I had firmly said before that I would pick her up, but now...
[Grace, I might not be able to pick you up at the airport. I’ll arrange for someone else to pick you up and ensure you return safely.]
Grace thought I was too busy with work. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
[It’s not that, you’ll understand when you arrive.]
After chatting on WeChat, I remembered the doctor’s advice to rest early and avoid staying up late.
But I’ve always had trouble sleeping, and laying in the hospital bed made it even harder to fall asleep.
Late at night, when willpower is at its weakest.
This insomnia led me to repeatedly ponder whether I should tell Daniel about this.
I’m ninety-nine percent certain that if I tell him, he will definitely want to reconcile and give the child a complete home.
But if that’s the case, he would inevitably be dragged down by me.
And what would the Carter family think of me?
They might think I’m using the child to bind Daniel, using the child to secure my position.
So, absolutely not.
I deliberated repeatedly, not knowing how long I pondered, until finally sleepiness overcame me and I drifted into unconsciousness.
In a dazed stupor, I seemed to sense that the room door had opened.
But I thought I was dreaming.
My sixth sense warned me that someone seemed to be standing by the bed, but initially, I thought it was an illusion.
Until the indescribable pressure persisted, my taut awareness suddenly awoke, and I turned my head sharply.
Indeed, a tall and imposing figure stood by the bedside!
The light from the corridor outside shone through the glass window of the hospital room door, vaguely illuminating that person’s face, but I was still startled, nearly falling off the bed.
"Careful!" The figure reacted immediately, bending down swiftly to catch me.
The familiar voice let me know I wasn’t dreaming, nor was it an illusion.
It was truly him.
The man I saw during the day, acting like a stranger, reluctant even to give me a glance—Daniel.
My heart pounded with fear, and after he caught me, I was completely unsettled.
Recalling his reaction during the day made me feel aggrieved, and I immediately withdrew from his touch.
"In the middle of the night, what’s your hobby? Being like a ghost can scare people to death." I reprimanded with annoyance.
"Sorry." Daniel apologized, his gentle and cautious demeanor reminiscent of his old self.
It was as if the cold, distant, unfamiliar man from the day was someone else.
"I just wanted to see how you were doing." He explained quietly.
I swallowed, my heartbeat nervous beyond control, fearing he might discover the truth.
Judging from his reaction, he probably didn’t know.
"There’s nothing much, just being overworked lately, leading to some health issues. The doctor said I just need to rest for a while." I replied calmly, trying not to show any slip-ups.
In the dim light, he seemed to smile, "I was sick not long ago too, just recently recovering..."
"Jessica told me."
"So does that make us kindred spirits in illness?"
I felt a sudden constriction in my chest, "What do you mean by saying that now?"
"Nothing much, don’t think too much. I won’t bother you." He seemed to regain his cold demeanor from earlier.
Listening to him, my heart was numb.
We fell silent suddenly, with nothing to say, yet he didn’t turn to leave.
I composed myself, regained my reasoning, and finally remembered to ask, "What are you doing in the hospital? Who is sick and hospitalized?"
"Grandpa. He’s been hospitalized for a few days."
"Is it serious?" I thought about how Old Master Carter was in poor health earlier in the year, and now he’s still hospitalized, it must be quite serious.
"You could say it’s serious, but it’s under control. When people get old, their bodies deteriorate; it’s inevitable." He spoke softly and gently, yet this once-so-confident and powerful pride of the heavens, now spoke with full of helplessness in the quiet night.
"The elderly will definitely be okay; don’t worry too much." Apart from comforting him, I couldn’t think of anything else.
"Okay." He responded softly, reached out to tuck me in, "It’s already one in the morning, keep sleeping; I won’t disturb you."
I was shocked, was he going to leave just like that?
No more conversation?
I instinctively searched for a topic, "Will you not sleep all night? That’s too hard on you; didn’t you say you were just recovering from illness a few days ago? You need to rest more."
Daniel smiled slightly, barely noticeable, "You still care for me."
"..." My heart warmed, realizing I was overstepping, I immediately found an excuse, "We’re amicable in parting; even after breaking up, we can be friends. It’s natural to show some concern for a friend."
"Fine, you always have a way of saying hurtful things so lightly."
What? Which of my words were hurtful?
I raised my eyes to look at him.
Though the room wasn’t lit, only the faint light from outside came in, I could still see his eyes shining brightly.
"Daniel, you’re the last person I want to hurt. But if I did hurt you, then I’m sorry, please bear with me." I said sincerely, my heart aching, staring into his bright, sparkling eyes.
