Chapter 27 - VOID

Raven pried open the next door located at the far end of the luxurious corridor.

The door, made of wrought iron with delicately carved intricacies along its edges, opened with a hiss upon sensing Raven's approach.

For a second, it hung about its hinges, as if unsure to reveal the entire chaos it hid behind itself.

But then, with a piercing wail, it opened fully, revealing nothing but a inky black darkness behind.

Raven's boots clicked unceremoniously on the corridor, clearly muffled by the heavy carpets.

His steps, slow and deliberate, hinted that he held no fear whatsoever for what remained concealed beneath the folds of darkness.

He put his right foot into the darkness, slow and cautious, as if apprehensive that he might not find a solid footing beneath.

And what seemed to be a casual hunch just got proven to be absolutely correct.

Unperturbed, Raven retracted his foot back to the corridor's safety.

His face did not show the slightest flicker of uncertainty or hesitation. It seemed that he had everything under his control, at least as of yet.

And why should he hesitate?

In most of the transmigration based novels he had read in his previous life, all the protagonists typically faced a situation like this.

And each of them employed a textbook solution.

They would infuse their entire body with mana and float in random direction, and suddenly a power up would be handed to them.

But that piqued Raven's curiosity.

What if he allowed himself to fall down the void?

What would await him there?

Something super cool or total annihilation?

He was going to find the answer out soon enough.

Making up his mind, he jumped.

And fell.

He moved downwards for a long time.

Meanwhile, he encountered several voices, some urging him to return to them, some begged for rescue, while some demanded that he bond with them.

Raven did not give in to these temptations.

He used mana to completely shut off his hearing, and surrendered his body to the action of gravity.

For a long while, he fell.

At one point of time, the numerous voices calling out to him faded away into oblivion.

Raven did not know when.

Some time later, the darkness got suffocating, a smooth transition from being a smooth fluid to a dense viscous substance.

Raven's lungs burned. Each breath was a battle. The oxygen in the void seemed to be depleted.

Raven didn't seem to care.

Foregoing oxygen, he began utilising mana to keep his heart going.

For others it might have been difficult, impossible even, but Raven was not others. His infinite mana reserves kept him going.

At one point of time, an immense wave of dizziness washed over him. His body and muscles ached, and he felt an immense urge to fall asleep.

Identifying the symptoms, Raven focused on circulating his mana, something he had not bothered doing since the time he just transmigrated. He wouldn't even have done it back then willingly, but it was a process Helios had started himself, and abandoning it halfway would have led to a gruesome death.

Entering a meditative state, Raven forgot all about the passage of time and the changes in his surroundings.

His only focus was on tempering his muscles and meridians.

Not surprisingly, he failed to notice just when he had reached the rock bottom.

When his mismatched eyes fluttered open, he found himself cocooned in the comforting embrace of a familiar darkness, the immense pull of gravitation which had earlier threatened to crush him nowhere to be encountered.
