Chapter 46 - First Meeting

The doctors wouldn't let them in the VIP room, asserting she needed rest. Amelia had rushed to the hospital from the studio, leaving her work in the middle. No one knew where she had gone. Her manager had been calling her like a madman, finally forcing her to switch off her cell.

"I don't know. The doctors said that the injury wasn't that serious. They have stitched it up. She lost some blood. Might have caused her to pass out. She should have woken up by now."

"About Caroline Anderson..."

"I've already contacted my family lawyer. We have evidence. I won't let her off for hurting our Jazmine." The Frank family had one of the top lawyers in New York. He was trustworthy, so he definitely couldn't be bribed, and all his family lived abroad, making it impossible to threaten him.

Amelia nodded, though she knew it would not be enough. Caroline Anderson belonged to the Anderson family, the number one in the city. At most, they could harm her reputation. But to do more than that... was impossible. She had already tried when Caroline had slandered her. But she couldn't even touch her reputation.

The two talked about how to deal with Caroline, and as they did, they didn't notice a man intentionally dressed in casual attire quietly standing in a corner, listening to their whole conversation. After the doctor's assurance, Amelia left while Frank snoozed off in the waiting room.

"We have run the tests. Ms. Jazmine's condition is not caused by her head injury. The head injury is only superficial. Instead, in her system, we have found a rare lethal drug. The drug has no odor and is barely detectable. It starts to take effect in just twenty minutes. It was lucky she was brought here instantly, otherwise, she might have suffered permanent damage to her organs."

The director paused for a second when he saw an unsettled expression unfolding on Sebastian's face. Scary.

This morning, he had planned to take a day off after a week of night shifts. At 4 AM, he received a call. The person claimed that he was Sebastian's secretary. The doctor laughed. Haha! Such a nice prank. But to be safe, he checked the official number.

And to his terror, the number matched the one he had received the call from! He was jolted wide awake. He quickly called back and apologized a thousand times while cursing under his breath. Grabbing his white coat, he rushed to the hospital without even combing his hair or washing his face. The hospital doctor team was surprised to see their head doctor like that. And the funny thing was, he couldn't even justify his panic by revealing that he had received a call from No. 1 company secretary. He could only say the patient was very important.

Since then, he had put his whole team of doctors on treating Jazmine. He couldn't afford to make a single mistake while treating such an important patient!

"There is no need to worry. We have detoxified the drug and cleared it out of her system. According to the results, the drug was present in her last meal. Once she wakes up, she'll be free to leave. But for further insurance, I recommend she stay here for another night to regain her strength."

"You'll not reveal this information to anyone else. Not even to Jazmine."

The doctor shuddered. Of course, he wouldn't! His tongue should rot away from massive gangrene if he dared to even think about that!

"Rest assured, Mr. Crowne. I wouldn't."

"Give me your coat."

"Ha...? Um... Alright." Weird. But nevertheless, he obliged.

Sebastian took the coat, and walked away toward her room, leaving a befuddled doctor staring at his back. At a distance, he gave his brother a call while heading toward the VIP room.

"Find out the backgrounds of every member of the restaurant."

Elias was already scratching his head, dealing with massive office work. When he heard another command from his brother, he wanted to bang his head on the table.

"And do it yourself. I want you to keep the process secretive. We can't trust anyone."

Sebastian cut off the call, not even troubling to listen to his brother's wails. He opened the door and walked into the VIP room. His eyes softened. How long had it been since he had seen her? His heart throbbed loudly as he walked closer to her. Even her mere presence had such an intense effect on him.

She lay on the white bed. Her eyes were closed. A white bandage was wrapped around her head. Her hand was connected to an IV drip. Two nurses were attending to her.

"Leave."

They knew he was some important tycoon, so they left without any objection. Sebastian walked to her side. Her cheeks were pale. He sat on the bed beside her and grabbed her hand. It was cold. He placed her hand on his lap and rubbed it gently, attempting to warm it up.

So many intense emotions assaulted him. So many memories—happy and sad. An intense desire to look into her jade-like eyes bubbled in his heart. But she was unconscious.

"Once again... I've failed to protect you."

He raised his hand and reached for her face. The back of his hand caressed her soft cheek. His heart filled with affection toward that woman. Her face was cold. He wanted to hug her and fill her with his warmth but stopped, fearing it might wake her up.

He was so scared when he heard the doctor. What if they had delayed? He couldn't even bear the thought of what could have happened then. Would he have lost her forever? He remembered what had happened back then when he thought he had lost her. He had fallen into a nightmare. He had lost all his will, becoming a working machine without emotions—he had lost himself. Only once he knew she was alright did he snap out of it.

"Would you forgive me?"

Suddenly, Jazmine Harrison's eyes fluttered, and they opened slowly. Sebastian was captivated by those bewitching eyes.
