Rebirth: I Will Win Easily in the Apocalypse-Chapter 25 - 15 Calling for Someone
Chapter 25: Chapter 15 Calling for Someone
Gu Yanlin hurriedly got dressed, and the three of them met in the living room. As soon as the door opened, the chill from outside hit them in the face. Gu Yanzhi looked down at the thermometer he was holding, which had dropped another 5 degrees in the short time they were inside.
Without delay, the three hurriedly left their room.
While going downstairs, Gu Yanzhi took a gong out of his space and put it in Gu Yanlin's hands.
"Dang"
"Dang"
"Dang"
"Dang"
Gu Yanlin led the way, ringing the gong in his hand as he walked.
Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao followed behind. When they reached the 16th floor, Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao, with their hands wrapped in their sleeves, knocked loudly on the doors of the two households living there.
Two families currently resided on the 16th floor, apart from the Gao Zhi family of four who had been there from the start. Xiao Lin, with his daughter and mother, had also moved in, chosen for the top floor which had spare rooms. Both families had elderly members, who usually had each other for company.
Fortunately, both families had children and were naturally alert during the night. Awoken by the incessant sound of the gong, they were wide awake by the time Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao started knocking, and the doors on both sides opened one after another.
As soon as the doors opened, heart-wrenching cries and quiet soothing voices could be heard from inside the homes.
The sound of the gong not only roused the adults but also scared the little ones of each family, who were now crying miserably, eliciting sympathy from anyone who heard.
Gu Yanzhi scratched his head awkwardly, quickly explained the situation to Gao Zhi and Xiao Lin, and instructed them to wear more clothes and keep warm before he and Song Zhao continued downstairs.
Gu Yanlin was no longer on the 15th floor. Sister Li and her father from 1501 were frantically knocking on the door of 1502.
"Xiao Zhong, Xiao Meng, wake up, quickly wake up."
"Sister Li, Grandpa Li, haven't Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng woken up yet?"
As soon as he reached the floor, Gu Yanzhi saw the scene and called out with a question.
"Xiao Gu, you've come down too, Yan Lin went further down. We can't wake up Xiao Zhong and Xiao Meng, they haven't frozen to ill health, have they?" Sister Li spoke while continuing to knock on the door of 1502.
Zhong Junfeng and Yin Meng were a young couple who had recently moved into building 10. Both were quite young, with one in the second year and the other just starting their first year at the same university, as senior and junior. They weren't residents of this community originally but had bad luck. On the day of the flood, they were supposed to check on the renovation of a relative's home of Zhong Junfeng's from out of town, take some pictures, and show them. Due to the heavy rain, they decided to stay for the night, but it turned out that they were trapped in the community.
By the time they found someone kind enough to send them back to school, they learned that their school had already been flooded and it was unclear where the students had been moved to.
The pair had neither stockpiled much food nor owned a boat, so they had depended on doing odd jobs for neighbors to borrow someone's boat to scrounge for supplies, barely scraping by.

More unfortunate was that the construction team hired by their relatives did shoddy work on the renovations, and under the relentless heavy rain, their house began to leak. It was impossible to find anyone to fix the house in such heavy rain, and at first, it was just a minor leak and still habitable.
A few days earlier, possibly due to prolonged water saturation, a part of their house's roof had collapsed, and now it was completely uninhabitable.
They asked someone to convey their request to move over, and after getting consent from the residents of the 10th floor, everyone helped to move their still usable belongings over.
When they moved over, their bed had been soaked and all their bedding was unusable. Everyone helped move the bed and piece together bedding—a sheet from one, a blanket from another, from Building 10. But they only managed to find their own family's spare summer ones; none of the blankets or mattresses were very thick, which was what Sister Li was worried about.
The four of them knocked on the door outside for several minutes before they heard a response from inside.
The door quickly opened, and the two of them were wrapped in blankets, shivering at the doorway, their breath turning to steam as they spoke.
"Sister Li, Grandpa Li, Sister Yan Zhi, brother-in-law, what's going on, why has it suddenly gotten so cold?"
The couple had only come over temporarily to check on the house and hadn't brought much warm clothing, just two thick coats in anticipation of rain, which would have been enough for a normal winter in City C. They hadn't expected the temperature to drop so abruptly, and they could only huddle together for warmth under the not-so-thick blankets.
"Sis, everyone's woken up."
While Gu Yanzhi was explaining to the couple, Gu Yanlin had also run up from downstairs. The other two households left downstairs, belonging to Zhang Qian and Zhuang Nanyang, had already been woken by the noise above. Gu Yanlin didn't have to do much to get them all up.
Gu Yanzhi glanced at the thermometer in her hand, and in just this short while, the temperature had dropped another 10 degrees. Fortunately, everyone was awake. With such a rapid temperature drop, young people with better constitutions could adjust better to the change. The elderly, having weaker bodies, could easily lapse into unconsciousness or even die if they lost warmth suddenly.
"Everyone's here. My mom has boiled some hot water, let's all have a drink to warm up,"
As he spoke, Gao Zhi came down from upstairs with a kettle of hot water.
"I'll find some cups," Sister Li, upon hearing this, swiftly went back home to gather cups and gave one to everyone present.
Though only she and her father lived in her household, it was always lively during the holidays, and they had prepared plenty of everything at home. She couldn't bear to throw it all away when moving to Building 10, so with everyone's help, she brought it all over.
In times like these, every item was a resource that might come in handy at any given moment. Hence, while moving Sister Li's belongings, despite there being lots, everyone helped without complaints, even searching her previous home to bring whatever they could and attempting to dismantle anything that was difficult to move.
"Thank you," the young couple gripped their cups, trembling and saying thank you as they shivered.
"I have two sets of thermal clothes at home, if you don't mind, I can go get them for you," Seeing the couple's condition, Gu Yanzhi wasn't heartless. Despite having endured many hardships and pains through ten years of apocalyptic life, those events had no connection to the people in front of her now.
Currently, the residents of Building 10 had a harmonious neighborhood relationship, with neighbors who were both warm and considerate. Whenever a household faced troubles, the others were ready to lend a hand. This included the few families that had joined later; while they hadn't formed a deep bond yet, nobody could bear to watch them suffer in the cold. She was ready to help with small matters like this when she could.
"Not at all, not at all, thank you, Sister Yan Zhi, thank you so much," the couple said, visibly moved. In this weather, thick clothes would soon become scarce, and they were freezing to death—what right did they have to be choosy? They'd be grateful for anything offered, even if it were stripped from a corpse.
