Pokémon: Above the Top-Chapter 295: Gogoat’s Fierce Performance
Chapter 295 - 295: Gogoat’s Fierce Performance
In the first match, Mark came out victorious, which made him feel like he'd vented all his frustration. Still, he secretly felt it was pure luck... if he had sent out Lapras, this battle might not have gone so well.
As for Wallace's side, the junior student clearly hadn't expected to lose, especially not to someone like Mark, who seemed completely unreliable and full of bluster.
The second student patted the girl on the shoulder, then stepped forward with an "aura of determination", clearly ready to avenge her junior.
"No problem, right?" Sato glanced at the relaxed Joseph and asked.
"Shouldn't be. I traveled alone before this, after all," Joseph replied with a smile, walking up to the command platform.
Once the butler, acting as referee, announced the start of the match, both sides threw out their Poké Balls at the same time.
Two flashes of red light streaked across the field.
Pelipper and Gogoat appeared simultaneously on the battlefield.
Sato and the others clearly saw the second student frown. As an academy-style Trainer, a solid knowledge base was one of her essential strengths.
But what frustrated her was that she had never seen the large-bodied, grass-covered goat Pokémon standing before her.
"No matter what it is, it's definitely Grass-type," she muttered. "Pelipper, use Hurricane!"
Hurricane: a Flying-type move with power comparable to Fire Blast. This girl clearly wasn't one to hold back; she opened with a heavy hitter.
At the same time, Sato suddenly felt a cool sensation on his face.
It was raining.
Sato was surprised. Pelipper hadn't used Rain Dance, which left only one explanation... this Pelipper had the extremely rare Ability: Drizzle.
More importantly, in rainy conditions, Hurricane's accuracy becomes extremely high and nearly unavoidable.
Hurricane howled through the field. Gogoat tried to dodge it using its powerful leaping ability.
But with the rain coming down, Hurricane's area of effect rapidly expanded, and Gogoat was quickly engulfed.
Joseph realized it was too late to warn Gogoat once the rain started, so he immediately switched commands mid-sentence. "Gogoat, Milk Drink!"
As Hurricane began to dissipate, the confident girl kept her eyes locked on the battlefield, ready to unleash another Hurricane the moment Gogoat reappeared.
Suddenly, Gogoat charged straight out of the fading storm, its body wrapped in crackling blue electricity. Using its exceptional jumping power, it lunged directly at Pelipper.
Wild Charge!
Although Gogoat was a pure Grass-type Pokémon, it could learn many moves of other types, and Wild Charge was one of them.
Pelipper, four times weak to Electric, was so terrified by Gogoat's sudden assault that it nearly lost its soul; it could almost smell its own charred flesh.
"Pelipper, Protect!"
The command rang out like an Arceus call. Pelipper quickly activated Protect, shielding itself from the "terrifying" Wild Charge.
"Pelipper, Hurricane!" the girl shouted again just as the protective shield disappeared. She clearly knew Pelipper well.
"Gogoat, Seed Bomb!"
Joseph wasn't backing down. At such close range, Gogoat's speed in spitting out a Seed Bomb far surpassed Pelipper's ability to flap its wings and launch another Hurricane.
Seed Bomb struck first. The explosive power launched Pelipper through the air, forcing Hurricane to cancel mid-cast.
"Gogoat, use Vine Whip to grab its wings!"
"GOGOAT!"
As Gogoat descended toward the ground, it extended four thick Vine Whips, lunging fiercely toward Pelipper.
"Pelipper, get out of there!"
The second student used the Trainer Skill, "Fixes Everything Roar", but it seemed her mastery was lacking... Gogoat's four Vine Whips cleanly grabbed hold of Pelipper.
"Pelipper, use Hydro Pump!"
With Fixes Everything Roar failing, the girl came up with a new tactic, apparently hoping to use the force of Hydro Pump to break free from the vines.
But there was no way Gogoat would give it such an opening. With a fierce yank of all four Vine Whips, Pelipper didn't even get the chance to use Hydro Pump, it was slammed hard into the ground.
"Pelipper lost the ability to battle. Gogoat wins. The winner of this round is Trainer Joseph!"
Two straight losses!
The second student stood stunned -SSSS-, staring at the fallen Pelipper. This had been her proudest partner: a one-in-a-million Pelipper that carried the Drizzle Ability with it at all times.
And yet, aside from causing some trouble for Joseph at the start, the rest of the match was completely one-sided. It didn't even get a proper chance to fight back.
Honestly, even Sato and Mark were a little surprised at Joseph's strength.
Sato remembered the first time he had met Joseph; Gogoat hadn't been with him at the time. Otherwise, maybe Joseph wouldn't have been in such a state.
Then again, it was said that an excellent Pokémon Breeder could raise a Trainer's strength using methods exclusive to their craft.
No need to train, no need to battle; just through eating, resting, and scheduled massage therapy, strength could gradually be built up.
It took time and consumed a lot of resources, but when it came to developing a Pokémon's potential, it was no less effective than drawing out strength through battle, and without the hidden injuries.
So, for many Pokémon, becoming the partner of a strong Trainer wasn't the ultimate dream.
Becoming the partner of an excellent Pokémon Breeder was.
The only downside was that although the Pokémon raised by breeders didn't have low levels, they had fought in too few battles, making their autonomous combat abilities generally weaker.
----
The butler quickly restored the battlefield, and Sato walked directly up to the command platform. As the last one to compete, he would naturally face the eldest student with the wavy orange hair.
"I admit, you guys are strong... but we won't give up until the very end!" The elder student declared with fierce determination in her eyes.
Sato remained silent. 'It was just a friendly three-on-three match... what was with all the drama?'
"Battle!"
Two Poké Balls were thrown at the same time.
Walrein and Cacturne appeared on the battlefield.
In terms of typing, the two Pokémon countered each other. Walrein's attack stat weren't that far off from Cacturne's, and its defense was even better.
Still, many factors affect the outcome of a battle; it couldn't be decided by base stats alone.
"Walrein, Blizzard!"

"Cacturne, Sucker Punch!"
The elder student started with a high-power move, but Cacturne's Sucker Punch landed first, striking Walrein hard in the jaw and interrupting Blizzard entirely.
"Walrein, Ice Fang!"
"Cacturne, Needle Arm!"
A close-range clash of physical moves. Ice Fang and Needle Arm both dealt significant damage to their targets.
Needle Arm hit harder, but Walrein's superior defense balanced it out. All in all, it was nearly even.
At some point, Juan had quietly arrived nearby, watching their battle intently.
