One Night Stand With Alexander Blackwood-Chapter 40 — Forty
Serena’s POV
A few days have passed. And I had not laid my eyes on Alexander in these past few days. Currently, I didn’t go to the office as I was given a sick vacation.
Memories of what happened in the hospital flashed through my mind, and I let out a deep breath. Alexander had left in a hurry, without saying anything.
"Serena, would you like to have anything specific for lunch?"
Mama’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts, and I turned to her with a small smile. "I don’t want anything specific. I’m fine with whatever you serve me."
"Are you still thinking about that fine young man? What was his name ag—Got it! Mr. Blackwood." Mama asked, her tone carrying just the right hint of teasing.
Heat colored my face as I listened to her words. I didn’t need a mirror to know that my face was extremely red.
"Mama..." I drew out while placing my face in my palms. "You are not meant to say such things."
"Why shouldn’t I?" Mama chuckled and took a seat beside me. "Tell me Serena, do you like him? I have seen the way he looks at you, and even if he tries to deny it, it’s obvious that he harbors feelings for you."
I turned my gaze to Mama, and my brows furrowed instinctively. "Mama..."
"You don’t have to say anything." She interrupted me. "I might be old, but I have experienced enough to know when a man likes a woman. And from what I’ve seen, Alexander likes you."
My teeth caught my lower lips, and I let out a deep breath. "Mama, even if we like each other, it cannot work. I me—"
"Why do you think it can’t work?" Mama cut me off, staring at me with wide eyes while disbelief clouded her eyes.
"Alexander and I belong in different worlds. We can’t be together." My mouth held a bitter taste as I forced the words out.
Mama exhaled as she held my hands. "Serena, I’d give you this piece of advice. If you like something go for it. If you don’t, you might end up with regrets later."
I listened attentively to her words and I fell into deep thoughts. She was right. But I hated to admit it... I was scared.
Mama seemed to read my thoughts from my expression as she continued. "If you fear what you’ve not even started, you are only exposing yourself to more regrets. I believe you will make the right choice."
.
She patted my arms, before rising to her feet and walking away.
I pondered on her words. She was right. If I kept thinking about the future, I might end up missing out on the present.
While I was deep in thoughts, the doorbell sounded, breaking my concentration. I looked up to the door and was about to stand when I saw the doorknob move and the door creaked open.
Maya stepped in, and I smiled gently.
"You are here." I beamed as I watched her walk in fully. Ever since I got discharged from the hospital, Maya made it a habit to visit me daily.
"I brought you good news." She was all smiles as she sank into one of the sofas.
I leaned forward, my eyes shining while I was eager to listen to the gossip.
"Mr. Blackwood stood up for you today." Maya informed me happily, while giving me teasing looks.
My eyes widened. "You are joking, aren’t you?" I retorted, unwilling to believe her words.
Maya stared at me pointedly. "Joking? Why should I be joking with something this important? Do you doubt me that much, Rena?" She pouted, complaining as she folded her arms.
I shook my head while smiling internally. Maya scooted over to myself. "I wasn’t joking. Alexander did stand up for you today. And in an awesome twist of fate, I’m happy to announce to you that Jessica has been fired."
I blinked, my eyes filled with disbelief. "Fired? Why?" I couldn’t believe it, nor could I wrap my head around it. How could Jessica get fired. It was unexpected.
"Rena," Maya held my hands and started with a gentle sniffle. "She took advantage of your absence, and began spreading malicious lies and false news."
"It was so bad that your reputation was being maligned. Fortunately..." She paused, patting her chest. "Alexander swooped in, and fired her. "
"Not only did he fire her, he debunked her words, restoring your image in the process. If you ask me, it was over due. I hate her guts, and she deserved every thing which happened today."
A part of me was relieved. I won’t see Jessica’s face if I resume. But another part of me was filled with worry. I knew Jessica’s attitude. There was no way she would take this lightly. She would retaliate, and come for me.
"Hey!" Maya snapped her fingers which broke my thoughts. "Earth to Serena, what are you thinking about?"
I sighed and explained what was on my mind.
Maya held her chin, then chuckled. "Rena, you know you worry too much. If I were you, I’d just sit back and watch a sexy man fight for me."
My brows shot up as I listened to her words. "You know Jessica just as much as I know. There is no way she would be calm about this."
Maya was silent for a while before saying. "No matter what she tries to do, I believe Alexander will always have your back." Her words were firm and it brought a smile to my face.
"Speaking of him, he said he would be dropping by today."
"Uh? He said that?" I repeated, feeling startled.
Maya nodded rapidly. "He did. And he—"
She was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. Maya and I exchanged glances and I could see the excitement in her eyes.
"He is here." She gushed and instantly rushed to the door.
Once Maya opened the door, she stepped to the side and Alexander walked in. Our eyes met, and strangely... my heart skipped several beats.
