New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 249: A raven’s pair quest [6]
Chapter 249: A raven’s pair quest [6]
Back to Alithe and the guards..
Alithe’s face was etched with a deep frown out of concern and anxiety, his nervousness clear in his body language as he watched the direction in which Coco had gone.
He knew that she had led the creature away from them intentionally, in an attempt to save him and the guards, which is why his heart was pounding and was heavy with worry, his concern for his safety.
Oh, no, he wasn’t concerned for her safety.
He’s concerned for his own safety because he knows that if Coco got hurt very badly in this rescue mission, the village chief of Yogusho Village will have his head on a silver platter.
Chief Salamandara had made it clear that Coco is someone important to her, but that doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t let Coco do what she wants— no, no, Chief Salamandara wants Coco to grow.
In order to grow, Coco has to be sent out to do missions.
Unfortunately, Alithe had come to the monster village under the guise of visiting an old friend, but the truth is, he wanted to scout the forest for his pair.
Sure, he asked the captain of the order for guards to be sent to him and not his mercenaries, but that doesn’t mean that he wants the whole kingdom to know that his pair was missing.
Alithe groaned, shaking his head.
The ground was still shaking beneath their feet, the tremors shaking the surface like the aftermath of an earthquake and everyone knows that the tremors were created by the monster that was chasing the leader of their little rescue group.
The guards stood around in a tense silence, their gazes fixed on the ground as it continued to shudder beneath their feet.
Alithe stood among them, his expression pensive as he pondered what was happening deeper in the forest.
"Let’s move and hide." Alithe called out to the guards, alarming them and snapping them out of their stupors, their shoulders tensing as they turned to the guild master.
Alithe and the guards moved out of the clearing, their bodies vibrating from the shaking of the ground beneath them as they usher behind the guild master.
It was a little hard to navigate through the forest due to the shaking getting progressively stronger, making the ground tremble with each passing second, but they didn’t have a choice, Alithe said an order so they had to move.
"They must be nearby." One of the guards mumbled under his breath, the tremors under his feet, shaking his body and resulting for his voice to come out shaky.
"Don’t think about them if you can’t offer to do anything to help her." Another guard said, his eyes narrowed towards the guard who spoke up, "Or would you rather be in that woman’s shoes? You can’t even swing your sword properly."
The air was already thick with tension, but it only got worse with the guard’s mocking statement.
"You—"
The shaking of the ground suddenly came to a stop, the tremors ceasing as if on cue, which made the guard’s words die in his throat, his anger subsiding.
For a moment, everything was still, the silence of the forest almost deafening in its intensity.
All of a sudden, like a shadow lifting, the feeling of the monster’s presence disappeared altogether, making all of them visibly look relaxed and relieved.
Alithe was thankful that the tension in the air lifted, the feeling of the monster’s presence gone without a trace.
However, it was unnerving, it was as if the monster’s presence had been there one moment and vanished into thin air the next, leaving behind an unsettling sense of emptiness.
The monster was unknown. Unnamed. Unrecorded.
How did Coco Hughes manage to kill such a beast? Alithe wondered as he strained his ears, his senses on high alert as he listened intently for any sound that could be related to Coco.
The questions can be asked later because locating Coco’s location comes first.
Alithe’s raven ears were a clear advantage in this situation, being able to hear sounds that human ears couldn’t pick up on.
Alithe’s head was tilted slightly to the side, his ears twitching as he focused all of his attention on his hearing, determined to hear anything that could indicate Coco’s safety or whereabouts.
Rustle. Rustle. Rustle.
Alithe’s eyebrows furrowed in concentration, his eyes narrowing as he focused even harder on the sound around him.
He could hear every rustle of the leaves, every snap of a twig, but there was no sign of Coco.
He could feel the tension in his body rising as he waited for any clue that could indicate her whereabouts. His mind was racing, wondering if she was even still alive, or if she had fallen victim to the monster.
The silence was deafening and Alithe couldn’t help, but feel a sense of dread in the pit of his stomach
Then, Alithe’s ear twitched as he heard the sound of something cracking, the noise cutting through the thick silence of the forest.
It was followed by a sharp gasp and a high-pitched squeal, the sound distinct to Alithe’s keen ears as it cut through the air; tensing at the sound, his senses immediately on high alert as he tried to pinpoint its direction.
The sound was distant, but clear to his sensitive hearing and he quickly tried to pinpoint the direction of the sound.
After a good second, he finally pinpointed where the sound had come— from the east, he was certain of it, but he couldn’t tell how far away it was.
"Get ready." Alithe warned the guards.
"Yes, sir—" The captain of the guards straightened up, but Alithe ears picked up something, a soft whisper.
"Shh." Alithe hushed the man, turning his body to where his ears picked up the sound, eyebrows furrowing in concentration.
"Can you hear me, Alithe?"
Despite the soft volume, the words were clear, and he was thankful that he recognized the voice as Coco’s.
