Chapter 250: A raven’s pair quest [7]

"Coco!"

Alithe’s face lit up with relief and joy as he saw Coco emerging from the trees, his black eyes widened at the sight of her, his heart soaring with relief.

His shoulders visibly relaxed and he couldn’t help, but let a small smile break out across his face.

He was so thankful that she was alive and unharmed, and he couldn’t stop himself from letting out a sigh of relief at the feeling of a wave of relief washing over him at the sight of her.

"What took you so long? I thought something had happened to yo.." Alithe asked as he began walking towards her, but when he saw a small white creature cradled in her arms, the words died in his tongue with his footsteps halting.

He had not seen the creature at first because he was eager to check on Coco’s state, but the creature moved, and now, his gaze was fixed on it.

He couldn’t believe what he was seeing though.

Is she carrying a fluffy white creature or was it just a trick of the moonlight? Alithe asked himself, the words stuck on the back of his mind as he kept his eyes on the creature.

Alithe merely stared at Coco, his eyes wide and his head tilted curiously to the side as he took in the sight.

He seriously had no idea what the creature was, he’s a guild master of the only mercenary guild in the whole kingdom, but has not encountered such a creature like the one in Coco’s arms.

"Sorry, Alithe." Coco said, her arms tightening around the fluffy creature as she apologized, "I didn’t know how to kill the monster so it took me some time."

"Wha..?" Alithe blinked, the woman’s explanation snapping him out of his stupor, but when he processed the words she said, a look of recognition crossed his dark eyes as he shook his head. "Ah.. No, no, I wasn’t really worried.."

His words slowly trailed off again as his eyes lowered, his gaze landing on the fluffy creature.

The creature was big— impressively large, almost as big as his own upper body, and had large eyes that were deep, rich brown in color that seemed to stare straight into his soul.

Obviously, its body was covered in white fur that was pristine and clean, its small ears perked up, as if it was listening to their conversation, with its tail flicking idly from side to side as it lounged in Coco’s arms.

Just like he thought earlier, Alithe had never seen a creature like this before nor had heard of its existence, so he found himself staring at it in fascination.

"Oh." The word left Coco’s lips, a light bulb appearing above her head when she realized what caused the hybrid man to stop talking. "She’s a friend that I met while I was being chased by the sludge haunter."

The explanation went past Alithe’s head at first, his mind was too occupied with fascination regarding the creature before him, but he heard something unfamiliar.

The hybrid’s eyes snapped up to meet Coco’s eyes, a questioning look in his eyes. "Sludge Haunter?" freēwēbnovel.com

"This is Konoha." Coco introduced the creature in her arms, her eyes darting away from his gaze to look down on Konoha. "She’s friendly, from what I could tell."

Coco scolded herself because she said something Alithe wasn’t supposed to hear.

His reaction tells me everything, and from that, I already know that I messed up. Big time. Coco thought to herself, a strained smile making its way to her face.

Coco’s lips twitched as she forced the smile on her face, and she was quick to change the topic, trying to act as if nothing were wrong and acting like she didn’t just say something unfamiliar to the raven before her.

Alithe’s expression became unreadable, it was obvious that Coco wasn’t telling him what really happened.

Her own body language betrayed her, her shoulders tensing and her gaze shifting away from him for a moment— it was obvious that she had almost revealed something she was not supposed to, very painfully so.

As Alithe stared at Coco, the creature in Coco’s arms stirred, its body stretching out and yawning.

It caught his attention once more.

The creature looked similar to a poison tiger, but its face was leaning more to the cuter side.

Now, his eyes may have been playing a trick on him, but he was sure that the creature had been a little grumpy as it turned its gaze to Alithe, studying him intently.

He would have appreciated the creature’s fascinating features— its fur’s texture being fluffy, making it look like a cloud that came to life with its brown eyes shining with an intelligent light— if it weren’t for the fact that the creature before him was sizing him up in one glance.

Its gaze was intense and unwavering, its head tilting slightly to the side as it took in every detail of Alithe’s appearance.

The creature looked like it was making mental notes, each moment spent studying him only adding to Alithe’s unease, making him want to look away, to escape the intense inspection, but he couldn’t tear his gaze from the creature.

It was watching him with an unnerving focus, its brown eyes fixated on him with an intensity that made him feel like a prey.

He was tempted to reach for his weapon, but he resisted the urge, aware that any sudden movement could set Coco off.

Then, all of a sudden, the creature suddenly broke its gaze, abruptly turning away as if it had lost interest in Alithe.

Its gaze shifted away from him, its expression seeming almost disdainful, as if it had found Alithe to be of little consequence.

The creature turned its attention to Coco, nuzzling its nose against her chin before letting out a soft, satisfied sound akin to a growl, but much more quiet and peaceful.

"We’re close to the lair, so it’s best if we move now."
