Chapter 248: A raven’s pair quest [5]

Coco watched as the egg flew through the air, its bright glow cutting through the darkness like a light bulb thrown blindly into nothing, but darkness.

The egg landed on the creature’s sludging body, the surface of the creature rippling as the egg landed on it and the egg seemed to sink into the creature’s body, disappearing from view as if it had been swallowed by the mass of goo.

Coco stared at the spot where the egg had disappeared into the monster’s body, her heart pounding in her chest.

The monster stood there for a moment, its glowing eyes fixed on her, before it let out a low guttural growl, but instead of lunging at her, the monster’s body began to shudder and convulse, its form pulsing and contracting.

Coco watched, her eyes wide with fascination and uncertainty, as the monster’s body slowly got consumed by tremors.

The sludge haunter fought against the force that was sucking it in, its body pulsing and undulating as it struggled to retain its form, but whatever force was pulling it inwards was too strong,

The monster’s body quivered and trembled, the slime-like substance that made up its form twisting and contorting as it continued getting sucked into its own body.

Coco watched as its body grew smaller and smaller, the goo shrinking at a rapid rate.

The water around the sludge haunter churned and swirled as the monster’s form shrank, the water being pulled into the vortex inside the monster’s body, and it only grew stronger as it completely drained of all the monster’s volume.

As the monster shrank, its form became less defined, its edges and features growing blurry and indistinct, its glowing eyes dimmed, the red light fading, Coco slowly released the breath she was holding.

Soon, the creature was nothing more than a small, indistinct blob, its body barely more than a blot of darkness, and then, with a soft pop, it vanished completely, leaving only a swirling pool of muddy water in its wake.

Coco watched in shock, the churning vortex subsiding, as quickly as the vortex began, it stopped, a deep silence filling the air as the once clear, clean muddy water stilled.

"Is it over?" Coco asked no one in particular, the tension in her body slowly melting.

Amongst the muck and grime, the previously glowing egg was now dark and lifeless, no sign of the magic that had once emanated from it, and just floating above the water, as if it was nothing more than a normal egg.

She stared at the egg that seemed to hover in the air for a moment, suspended on the surface of the water as if held by an invisible hand.

Then, after a moment, the egg began to fall.

"No!" Coco screamed, her eyes going wide, her hand reaching out instinctively for the egg, her fingers grasping nothing in the air.

At the same time of reaching out for the egg, a green vine appeared out of nowhere, shooting towards the egg at an alarming speed and wrapped itself around the dark shell, its movements quick and precise.

Coco froze, her gaze shifting from the vine to the egg.

The vine’s movement was smooth and seamless, its vines wrapping around the egg in a tight grip before gently tugging it out of the water.

Coco watched in awe as the vine pulled the dark egg towards her direction, her gaze fixed on the vine’s movement, her gaze following the vine’s length unconsciously, and then, she realized that the vine was coming out of the spot beneath her feet.

Her eyes widened in surprise as she looked down, her gaze focused between her wet boots.

There, on the surface, an enormous vine was emerging from the muddy riverbank, its length stretching out and curving to bring the egg to her.

"Aww! You used your skill like a veteran!" The garden fairy gushed, giggling to herself.

Coco could only blink owlishly as a response, reaching out and gently accepting the egg from the vine, the touch of the egg feeling like silk against her fingertips despite being as dark as the sky above.

Once she took the egg, the vine that had appeared from between her legs had disappeared the moment she had taken the egg, its presence disappearing with a gentle ripple in the muddy riverbank.

It was as if the vine had appeared solely to bring her the egg, and then vanished once its purpose was fulfilled, as if it had never existed.

With the adrenaline dying down, Coco held the egg in her hands, cradling it gently against her chest.

"I can’t believe I survived that.." Coco’s voice slowly trailed off when she felt a faint trembling in her arms, her eyes darting immediately at the egg that was vibrating slightly in her arms.

Startled, she held the egg tighter, her eyes widening as she felt the trembling get stronger, the egg feeling almost alive in her arms.

"Oh! It’s hatching!" Lala gasped, excited and happy, like she wasn’t screaming for her life a few minutes ago.

However, that’s not something that Coco should worry about right now because the dark egg in her arms has begun to tremble more violently than ever before, its surface trembling with an almost frenzied intensity.

Coco watched with wide eyes, holding it tightly against her chest as a series of cracks began to appear in the shell, small cracks first appeared on top of the egg— the crack forming near the top, a thin, jagged line that zig-zagged across the smooth surface.

Then, from there, the cracks spread quickly, the egg shell splitting open with a sharp cracking sound, with shards of the dark, hardened material falling to the ground.

"This is the first time I’m witnessing an egg hatch after absorbing a monster like that!" Lala squealed as she got off Coco’s shoulders and hovered around the egg.

Coco decided to ignore and look at the egg, only for her heart to skip a beat.
