New World with Four Husbands-Chapter 235: It’s not you, it’s me
Chapter 235: It’s not you, it’s me
"Just what are you getting at—"
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Coco was getting impatient with Alithe’s roundabout way of speaking about what he knows about Jonathan and was ready to lunge at him.
Screw avoiding fist fights! Screw believing that violence is unjustifiable!
Sometimes, fists should be used to do the talking because people can be hard headed and stubborn! Fists against their faces would make them understand—
Coco paused her train of thoughts when a knock resonated throughout the room. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The knock echoed throughout the room again, a loud and sharp sound that made the black haired woman jump in surprise.
Both the village chief and the raven hybrid behind Coco jerked in surprise in their spot, their attention immediately drawn to the unexpected noise as well, their shoulders tense from shock.
Coco turned towards the door, her gaze moving over to the heavy oak door.
The knock erupted from the other side once again, the sound loud and clear in the otherwise silent room once more, but she didn’t move just yet.
"I’m not sensing anyone dangerous." Alithe spoke up and released a sigh through his nose, "Open the door, it’s not like you’ll be able to jump at me with someone waiting for the door to open up."
"Oh." Coco blinked and turned her attention back to the raven hybrid with an eyebrow raised, "So you do know that my fists were itching to throw a punch at you?"
Alithe rolled his eyes and scoffed. "You made it pretty obvious. Didn’t you know that your body language gives you away even though your face was saying otherwise? You should start working on that first before anything else."
"Only because I have not encountered someone who I wanted to punch so badly until now." Coco threw back, her eyebrows furrowed in irritation.
"That’s enough now, Alithe." Chief Salamandara broke off the argument before the office carpet could have any blood stains on it, "Now, please open the door and let the person coke inside, Coco."
"Tsk." The Raven hybrid clicked his tongue and turned away from Coco, "For someone with a pretty face like yours, you sure have a sharp tongue and a nasty personality."
"Alithe." The village chief snapped her attention to the dark haired hybrid with a smile, her tone firm and stern.
The man’s ears perked up as he heard the village chief call out his name, her voice carrying a mix of affection and irritation.
He could sense the underlying agitation in her words, her lips curved in a small, if slightly strained and agitated, smile— he could see it in the way her mouth was set in a firm line, despite the small hint of a smile that tugged at the corner of her lips.
His instincts were correct, she was clearly angry.
As soon as Coco walked towards the door, her expression turned stern and serious, but he could still see a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
He knew the village chief well enough to know that she was trying to hide her anger, not wanting to show an ugly side to Coco and possibly chase her away when she had just befriended her.
Chief Salamandara is not even that sure if Coco truly sees her as a friend, but Coco showing annoyance in her presence is a sign, right?
"What are you doing here..?"
Chief Salamandara looked away from Alithe and returned her attention to Coco, her ears picking up the question uttered by Coco.
Looking past Coco, the village chief raised an eyebrow when she saw the first husband of the original Coco Hughes standing in front of the door, his face drained of its color with an obvious anxious expression.
"Is something the matter?" Chief Salamandara asked, making Coco and her husband turn their heads to look at her.
"Ah, no, no, no! Nothing’s wrong!" Coco laughed nervously and stepped out of the office, "I’ll be going now! Don’t you worry! I’ll come and visit the office again for our deal, Alithe! Make sure to be free by then!"
Coco let out a forced laugh once more before she closed the door, her heart still racing at the sudden appearance of the first husband.
"Coco.." Zaque mumbled, his hands tightening on the basket he was holding and making his knuckles turn white.
"No, Zaque." Coco let out a sigh and shook her head, she stepped a foot forward and started walking towards the exit of the building.
"You came here to get a permit from the village chief, right? I want to get one, too." The red haired mediator rushed to follow behind Coco, his footsteps heavy, but quick as he catched up to her.
"Sure." Coco said, not bothering to look back at him and continued walking, "But you’re not coming with me. Whatever you do with your life, as long as you’re included with what I’m doing, should be good. Just stay away from any trouble."
"What? No!" Zaque cried out and grabbed Coco’s wrist, his red eyes blown wide in shock.
"No, Zaque." Coco pulled her hand away from his hold and refused to meet his gaze, her eyes darting everywhere except at him, "If you want to go to the main city, then go, but I don’t want you to come with me."
"Why not?" Zaque hissed and tightened his hold on the basket even tighter, "What happened? Why are you acting strange? You became like this just this morning, right? Was it because of something I said? Something I did? Something I baked? Something I can’t remember?"
The questions he bombarded her way made her take a step, not used to being on the receiving end of an intense confrontation like this one.
She’s usually the one who confronts other people after all.
"It’s not you." Coco said and glued her gaze on the dirty street outside the door of the village hall, "It’s me."
That’s so cringe.. But I really can’t face him right now..
