Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 233: Don’t Just Cry
Shane looked at Audrey Sutton’s expression and realized she was not playing hard to get but was genuinely rejecting him.
Even though he found it difficult to bear at this moment, he still didn’t want to force her.
But he couldn’t shake off the unhappiness, though he kept silent.
After letting go of Audrey, he didn’t say a word, got up, and left her room quickly, closing the door with a loud bang.
Audrey sat by the bed, watching him get angry. She felt an inexplicable sense of grievance, and her eyes became moist.
She even reflected internally, wondering if she had indeed done something wrong.
Perhaps men and women have different perspectives on such matters.
But he should also consider things from her point of view—why get so mad...
Audrey was feeling both wronged and worried, fearing he might actually go out and find another woman in anger.
However, if he dared to do that, she might never forgive him.
Love has its limits; it’s not like she can accept anything just because she loves him.
Fortunately, she stayed by the door listening for a long while, and it was utterly quiet outside with no one coming or going.
...
The cold wind blowing on the balcony made the crimson at Shane’s fingertips even more glaring.
He didn’t know what had gotten into him; he never had such a strong desire before.
Perhaps he became greedy after having tasted that kind of sweetness.
After calming down, he realized his attitude towards her might have been excessive; he shouldn’t have been so harsh.
Though she usually seemed carefree, she was quite sensitive inside.
After finishing his cigarette, he returned to the room and glanced at the clock on the table. It was almost one; she should be asleep by now, right?
...
Audrey curled up under the blanket, feeling unsettled. So she consulted Flora Lane about it, wanting to know her perspective and whether Audrey was indeed in the wrong.
Because of the time difference, Flora probably saw Audrey’s message only after waking up in the morning and replied at noon.
They chatted for quite a while. Flora, with her rich dating experience, shared some of her past encounters with Audrey.
Flora told her that even though she and Shane were married, mutual respect was essential in intimate matters. However, she also advised Audrey not to go overboard and to sometimes see things from his perspective; they should try to understand each other.
Audrey agreed with the principle, but achieving mutual understanding was not an easy task.
She thought Shane knew she liked him, yet he didn’t respond, and he used that as a reason to persuade her, ending up angry and slamming the door.
Reflecting on their time since getting married, it seemed like she was always the first to give in. During their cold wars, as long as she didn’t reach out, he could vanish without a trace.
She felt that only someone who didn’t love could be this indifferent. Because every time they were at odds, she found it unbearable and couldn’t get through the day without easing the tension.
But he seemed capable of acting like she didn’t even exist.
Audrey thought she had been humble in her love, yet he was still often dissatisfied with her...
The more she thought about it, the more wronged she felt. As she typed her reply to Flora, tears flowed uncontrollably down her face, soaking into the pillow...
"Click—"
The sound of the doorknob turning made Audrey instinctively turn towards the door, and she saw a shadow slip into the room as it opened slightly.
Her phone was still lit, and Shane, by the weak light from the phone, saw her. Frowning in the darkness, his voice was slightly stern, "Why aren’t you asleep yet?"
Audrey was momentarily stunned, caught up in her inner turmoil.
On one hand, she was blaming him, and on the other, she was hesitating whether to apologize to him, influenced by Flora’s relationship advice.
She didn’t expect him to appear suddenly, nor did she know why he was here.
Was he here to blame her?
"Click—" Seeing she didn’t speak, Shane reached out and switched on the light by the door, flooding the room with brightness.
The light was somewhat dazzling, and Audrey squinted instinctively.
It was then Shane saw her tear-streaked face; her eyes and nose were red, and her lashes clumped together with tears, making her look both aggrieved and pitiable.
He hadn’t expected she would stay up so late, ending up like this; he initially thought she was just playing on her phone under the covers. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Realizing the situation was off, Shane frowned and walked hurriedly to her bedside, sitting down beside her, speaking with a hint of worry and urgency, "What’s wrong?"
Audrey placed her arm over her eyes, trying to block the uncontrollable tears, not wanting him to see her like this.
She wanted desperately to control her emotions, but seeing him somehow made her feel even more aggrieved.
Shane gently pulled her arm away, trying to soften his voice, as if soothing a sulky child, "Tell me what’s wrong? Why are you crying alone late at night? Who bullied you?"
Through blurry, tear-filled eyes, Audrey looked at him, tears welling up and making his image increasingly fuzzy.
She pulled her hand from his, turning her back towards him and wiping her tears furiously, but the tears were relentless.
Seeing her so upset, Shane was at a loss, leaning down slightly to gently tuck the hair sticking to her tear-streaked cheek behind her ear, wiping the tears from her eyes with his thumb, whispering in her ear, "Is it because of what happened earlier?"
Even though Audrey didn’t react or respond to him, seeing her cry even harder let Shane know he hit the mark.
He hadn’t anticipated his unintentional action could upset her this much.
Reflecting on what he did, he thought she would at most complain a bit after he left and then crawl into bed, play on her phone, and sleep.
Evidently, this girl’s feelings were more intricate than he had imagined.
Shane kicked off his slippers, lying beside her over the quilt, gently combing through her messy hair, urging her, "Don’t just cry, talk to me."
Audrey remained turned away from him, her emotions clearly not yet settled.
Shane patiently comforted her, "If you don’t want to, I won’t mention it in the future. I wasn’t trying to make you uncomfortable, nor was I angry at you, I just felt a bit bad being rejected then."
Audrey sniffled, not crying as intensely anymore; listening to his explanation, she felt her grievances lift slightly.
She realized she forgave him so easily; no matter how much she resented him before, as long as he spoke to her like this, gently and warmly, her heart softened instantly.
