Chapter 232: Chapter 232: That Child

Chloe Swift wasn’t sure how much of the rumors were true, but it was undeniable that regardless of Stella Charlie’s bad reputation, Vincent Warner was still infatuated with her.

After sending Chloe Swift off, Stella Charlie stood by the door, watching Chloe’s departing figure thoughtfully, lowered her eyes, and gently closed the door.

Chloe’s words, "I’m pregnant," echoed in her ears.

Stella’s hand instinctively fell on her own abdomen. If that child hadn’t been aborted, it seemed this month would be the due date.

"Meow~"

Putting away her thoughts, she bent down and picked up the tabby cat winding around her feet, cradling it in her arms. She returned to the house, trying not to think about that beautiful but somewhat cruel past.

After returning to the hotel, Chloe hesitated for a long time before calling Vincent Warner.

The "beep beep" sound rang in her ear for a long time. Just when she thought he wouldn’t answer, his voice came through the receiver.

"What’s up?"

Chloe was taken aback, pursed her lips, and asked him, "I haven’t seen you in a few days. Mom is a bit worried about you and asked me to call and check in."

"I’ll give her a call."

"...Okay."

"Beep——"

He hung up decisively, not giving Chloe much time to organize her words.

Staring at the disconnected call, Chloe felt a bit powerless.

She even hoped there was something between Vincent Warner and Stella Charlie, as maybe then her efforts might bring a turning point in her relationship with Vincent.

But obviously, it was all in vain.

...

Audrey Sutton stepped out of the bathroom after washing up, sat in front of her vanity mirror, and put on a facial mask.

"Knock knock——" The door sounded twice, and before she could respond, Shane Warner had already turned the doorknob.

"What are you up to?" Audrey turned her head to ask him.

Shane looked at her in her pajamas, her hair wrapped in a towel: "Why are you showering so late?"

Adjusting her mask in the mirror, Audrey replied, "I had work to do, painted a bit before I went to shower."

Shane entered the room, closed the door behind him, and sat on her bed.

Watching his series of actions through the mirror, Audrey was a bit confused.

"Do you need something?"

"Ahem——" Shane cleared his throat and, as if trying to hide something, said, "No, continue what you were doing."

His "no" made Audrey feel there was something odd about him.

She studied him with a puzzled look, while he kept his eyes fixed on her.

Audrey picked up an unopened facial mask from the table, waved it at him, and said, "Do you want one of these?"

Shane paused for two seconds before nodding, "You help me apply it."

Audrey was stunned; last time while shopping with her mom, she excitedly bought a bunch of men’s skincare products to pitch to him, and he stubbornly refused to try them. Now he was so straightforward about applying a facial mask.

Very odd.

What made him suddenly change his mind?

Audrey took the facial mask to the bed, easily tore open the sheet from the small slit on the packaging, and stood in front of Shane, "Close your eyes."

He cooperatively closed his eyes.

Audrey felt his compliance was a bit unusual, but since he was willing to cooperate, she didn’t think much of it.

She gently lifted his chin with one hand while unfolding the mask with the other, "It might feel a bit chilly at first."

He stayed silent and still, keeping his eyes closed.

Standing beside him, Audrey carefully placed the mask on his face, adjusting the fit and gently smoothing out any air bubbles with her fingers.

She noticed that his skin was rather nice; perhaps since he often kept a stern face, there weren’t any noticeable fine lines.

"Alright, you can open... ah!" She was midway through her sentence when a force at her waist suddenly pulled her forward, her center of gravity shifted, and she fell into his embrace.

The face mask rubbed against his pajamas, causing Audrey to frown and voice her displeasure, "What are you doing?"

As she was adjusting the mask with her hands, Shane reached up and peeled the mask off her face, "Can’t you tell what I want?"

Even if Audrey couldn’t grasp the intent in his words, his restless hands gave her a clear indication.

This seemed like the first time he was taking the initiative.

And it didn’t seem like he was joking.

Audrey pressed down on his hands, her face slightly flushed, "I don’t want to today."

Shane removed the carefully applied mask, restraining her when she tried to get up, with a mischievous hint in his smile that was never there before, "But I want to."

"You should also consider how I feel, though." Audrey tried to reason with him.

She genuinely didn’t want to; her back was still sore from earlier, and she’d felt uncomfortable even sitting while painting lately.

And the upcoming days would be busy with deadlines.

Shane took off the towel wrapped around her head, letting her damp hair fall freely, "Didn’t you say you liked me? How can you refuse me now that I’m taking the initiative?"

"Liking you doesn’t mean I have to agree to all your demands unconditionally."

"Then what do we do now?"

Feeling the pressure against her thigh, Audrey swallowed nervously, frowning slightly, "If I weren’t with you, would you just find some pretty girl?"

Shane’s expression darkened, and he pinched her cheeks with some force, "Audrey Sutton, you’re performing poorly!"

Audrey’s eyes showed a bit of grievance; her cheeks hurt from his grip. She gently removed his hand and held it in hers, looking at him, "You can’t just bully me irrationally because I like you! Besides, my period is coming soon."

"But it’s not here yet."

"But in the days leading up to a girl’s period, her body feels different, a bit uncomfortable."

With a skeptical look, Shane watched her.

"It’s true."

"Why don’t you want to sleep with me? Was the experience not good before?"

Audrey didn’t expect him to ask such a straightforward question. She pressed her lips together, unsure how to respond, not daring to meet his gaze, which held a beast-like quality.

But he asked more bluntly, "Was it uncomfortable?"

Audrey mumbled her complaint about him, "You only care about yourself."

A man being criticized by his woman about this made Shane feel even more displeased.

"I’ll be more considerate this time."

"No." Audrey was firm, "I said I don’t want to."

After expressing her thoughts, she still anxiously watched Shane’s changing expression, afraid he’d really get angry with her.

Pain and fatigue were only a small part of the issue, something she could endure.

She just didn’t want, when their relationship showed no progress, for him to only be proactive in such matters.

If he was truly interested in her, and initiated such a request, she might cooperate, but now she feared he was merely seeking to satisfy his physical needs.

This woman could be her, or anyone else.
