Chapter 194: Chapter 194: Hired Supporters

"Don’t worry, it’s not like this is the first time you’ve embarrassed yourself."

Even though Shane said this, by Saturday, when Audrey and Laura arrived at the comic convention, she spotted Faye and Mor, along with a bunch of people who appeared to be company employees.

The group was quite large.

Curious about their presence, Audrey approached Faye and asked him, "Brother Xavier, what are you guys doing here? And why are there so many staff members with you? Is Starfield hosting some event here today too?"

Upon seeing Audrey, Faye first smiled ingratiatingly before explaining, "What event? Master Shane asked us to come and support you, sis."

Audrey: "..."

She was completely surprised by Shane’s stunt, especially since he hadn’t mentioned anything about it last night during their phone call.

Looking around at the blatant group of water army, Audrey nervously glanced over, relieved that there weren’t many people around. Otherwise, if her peers saw it, they’d definitely think Audrey had hired a water army for sure.

"Support what, exactly? You guys actually took him seriously? Hurry back, why are so many people standing here? Doesn’t the company have a lot going on? Go back!" Audrey was anxious to send them away.

While she worried about her booth being deserted, she couldn’t bring herself to let Shane employ company staff to boost her sales; she thought such an act was really shameless.

To her surprise, Faye retorted, "No way, Master Shane said each of us must leave with a signed comic book from sis to complete the task."

"Keep your voice down!" Audrey was immensely guilty, "You guys head back; I’ll talk to him about this. It’s simply nonsense!"

"Sis, Master Shane means well. Plus, we’ll be operating discreetly; we guarantee no one will notice anything fishy." As Faye spoke, his gaze swept over the employees, saying, "They’re all folks interested in the convention; they wanted to explore, earn a salary while having fun—why not? We’re on a paid holiday for once, sis; don’t worry about us, better focus on your work."

Audrey still appeared dissatisfied, so Faye turned to the group and said, "Disperse, go explore but don’t forget the real task."

Watching such a large water army team, Audrey couldn’t help but feel uneasy, yet Faye had made arrangements, and the group gradually entered.

She was busy preparing her stuff, so she didn’t linger with Faye.

Although Shane’s actions were to help her save face, she still thought Shane was absurd—a usually bright guy—coming up with such ridiculous ideas!

Audrey avoided any Starfield employees at the venue, feeling guilty upon seeing them.

The authors present for signings today, Audrey had met a portion at the last author gathering, while many others were famous personalities from other sites.

Crystal Wilson’s comic had been signed for film adaptation, and the website took advantage to release the third volume, with her signing session scheduled today.

Since Crystal liked gossiping behind others’ backs, Audrey particularly feared her "water army" being exposed.

"Audrey, come over here for a sec." In the back, Vanessa Sterling gently waved at Audrey.

Audrey had been eager to ask Vanessa for signing tips, so she dashed over, "What’s up, Vanessa?"

Vanessa didn’t speak but handed Audrey a candy, which she took without suspicion, and tasted, then said, "Brown sugar preserved plum?"

"Yes, I had three left in my bag; I gave one to Luna earlier."

With the candy in her mouth, Audrey mentioned, "Jasper Jones is here today too, saw his poster at the entrance."

Upon mentioning Jasper, Vanessa’s expression showed a hint of awkwardness and guilt: "I haven’t contacted him in a while, it feels embarrassing to meet like this."

Audrey hesitated and asked, "I heard from Jasper that after watching a movie last time, you blocked all his contacts?"

Vanessa didn’t hide this from Audrey but didn’t reveal the entire truth: "Yes, since you invited me initially, I told my brother it was you. But when you didn’t show up, I bumped into my brother outside the theater, he thought I lied to him, misunderstood me and Jasper’s relationship, said he’d trouble Jasper, so I blocked him to avoid dragging him into this."

Audrey suddenly felt a bit guilty: "Your brother didn’t do anything to you, did he?"

Vanessa’s glance noticeably evaded, as if recalling some unpleasant incident, but she just smiled and shook her head: "No, he just scolded me a bit."

"You’re twenty after all; it’s normal to date, why’s your brother so strict?"

Vanessa merely said, "He doesn’t want me dating so early."

Audrey instinctively felt this wasn’t the whole story but seeing Vanessa hesitant to delve deeper, she didn’t press further.

As signing time approached, Audrey touched up her makeup in front of a mirror, led by the staff to her small table.

More people queued than she expected, a few clearly being Shane-sent "water army," yet the total numbers couldn’t compete with bigshots like Hylan and Jasper. But as a first-time signing newbie, her fan numbers matched well with Crystal’s.

Overall, Audrey herself was quite satisfied, as a huge weight was lifted off her heart, signing extensively with more ease.

She felt lucky Shane was away; if he had showed up to join the crowd, then her scheme of calling familiar faces as water army to boost sales would’ve been definitively obvious.

When Faye queued, he discreetly placed a cup of milk tea on her table, quietly saying, "A Mr. Warner asked me to buy it for you."

Rolling her eyes at Faye secretly, Audrey quickly signed his book and sent him off.

But, the milk tea was indeed tasty, warm, and fragrant.

Audrey wasn’t worried about the water army anymore, rather she feared everyone in Starfield might soon know Third Young Master Warner’s wife was a "smutty comic" artist.

Her "water army" aside from Faye involved Barry who brought Flora and the others for fun to the convention.

However, after their book-signing attempts, they vanished. Barry mingling around naturally couldn’t stay put, while Flora probably tagged along with Seraphina to eye handsome guys.

Post signing, Audrey experienced signing cramps for the first time.

Seeing so many people enjoyed her work filled her heart with joy.

Arriving backstage, she took out her phone intending to report the good news to Shane, only to find an unread message from him: "Didn’t fall flat, did you?"
