Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 144: Stop Being Foolish
Shane looked at her with a faint smile: "Is there anything you don’t dare to say?"
"Well, I don’t have any proof, do I? What if you accuse me of slandering them?"
"Go on."
Audrey Sutton appeared very cautious, glanced outside the office, and after confirming no one was there, covered her mouth with her hand and lowered her voice to say: "I think your little secretary has some issues."
After speaking, she didn’t continue with her inner guesses but instead observed Shane’s expression. If he showed resistance, she would stop speaking.
But Shane raised an eyebrow with a half-smile in his eyes and slightly pulled at the corner of his lip, asking her: "How so?"
"Do you remember how far away she was from us then? When I reacted, that person was almost right in front of me, but she could still block that knife so quickly. Don’t you find it odd?"
Shane narrowed his eyes and silently pondered. At that time, he didn’t even notice Lan Irving’s position, in the chaos, he only cared about Audrey, and he initially believed it was all arranged by Vincent Warner.
He started thoroughly doubting Lan Irving starting from the moment he received the news of Clay’s death on the phone.
The last time in the hospital, he deliberately lied to Lan Irving about Clay’s improving health, as a test, and the test’s result evidently confirmed his suspicions.
Audrey, seeing him silent, couldn’t discern whether he agreed with her or resented her suspicion of the secretary who had been with him for so many years. Thinking it over, she reluctantly added: "I’m just speaking blindly based on a feeling without evidence, and besides... she did indeed block that knife for you."
She didn’t say that during the chaos, she saw the smile Lan Irving flashed her when she fell into his arms, a smile of success.
It was precisely that smile that made Audrey feel that everything was orchestrated by Lan Irving.
But after all, it was just her side of the story. She originally had a grudge against Lan Irving, so Shane might not fully believe what she said.
"Alright, I will handle this matter."
Audrey pouted, not knowing his true attitude. She picked up her pen and was about to continue drawing when she heard Shane say: "Next time if you run into danger, remember to hide behind me, don’t be foolish anymore."
Upon hearing this, Audrey’s heart brightened instantly: "Are you worried about me?"
"Worried, yes. If something happens to you while you’re with me, do you think I could survive past tomorrow from your brothers’ hands?"
Audrey rolled her eyes, didn’t want to talk to him, raised her hand, and continued drawing.
Shane continued: "You’re not that smart to begin with, and if you end up with a disability, you’re pretty much done for; I could take a minor injury, even bedridden for life, at least my brain would still work."
"Stop talking! Shut up!"
For some reason, Shane particularly enjoyed making her angry; seeing her annoyed and frantic seemed to amuse him.
The next day, Audrey spent the whole afternoon dressing up at home to accompany Shane to The Sterling’s charity auction. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
Also to regain some face in front of Clarissa Morgan.
When Shane got home from work to pick her up, looking at Audrey, who was standing at the entrance putting on her high heels, he said: "Going out like this?"
Audrey thought he was unhappy with her style, checked herself in the mirror, and felt her makeup was done, hair styled, and the outfit was fine: "Doesn’t it look good?"
Shane reached out and grabbed her arm, pulling her into the freezing cold outside; Audrey, lightly dressed, shivered instantly, and his voice came with a scolding: "Don’t shiver; dressed like this, I thought you weren’t cold."
Audrey looked up at him, slightly disgruntled: "What should I wear, then? Later at the party, all the other girls will be dressed beautifully, and I’ll be the only one bundled up like a grizzly bear, wouldn’t it just be embarrassing for you?"
Shane gave her a helpless glare, bypassed her, and went upstairs.
Audrey stood there, puzzled, watching him, not knowing what he was going to do. It was too cold outside, so she sneaked back indoors.
Worried that she may have angered him again, but she dressed up nicely just to give him face.
While she was contemplating, she saw Shane coming down with a white down jacket; it was her jacket.
"Put it on."
Audrey frowned and resisted, taking a step back: "Who wears a down jacket to a party? I won’t wear it!"
Shane coldly glared at her. Although he didn’t speak, his gaze was so fierce it seemed as if it would devour her, making Audrey feel very guilty.
She swallowed, her eyes and brows drooping in grievance, stomped her foot in high heels, and started to whine: "Oh~ everyone else wears little dresses, and I’m the only one in a big padded coat, it’s ugly to the death!"
"It’s not like you’re ugly for just a day or two."
Audrey reached out and took the jacket from his hand, but then placed it back onto the sofa inside the house and quickly ran back to Shane’s side, smilingly taking his arm, her tone flattering: "Let’s go."
Shane stood like a pillar, unmoving, his eyes coldly glaring at her.
"It’s really not cold! Think about it, the car has heating, and later the venue will have heating, too, it’s not going to be cold for me. Besides, if I catch a cold, I’m the one taking medicine and getting injections, I won’t blame you."
After saying that, she looked at him for two seconds, seeing that his expression had not softened and he showed no signs of compromise. Audrey let go of her hand and said: "Fine! If you wear it, I’ll wear it!"
Seeing him turn to leave, Audrey was startled, thinking he was really going to get his down jacket, and secretly gritted her teeth: Tough guy!
It turns out, he just went inside to grab the down jacket she had placed back on the sofa, walked over, and without saying a word, draped it over her shoulders, grabbed her arm and stuffed it into the sleeve, crouched down, pulling the zipper from the ankle to the top, finally even fastening the hood for Audrey.
Audrey stared at him motionless, full of resentment, instantly losing the courage to compete with Clarissa Morgan for beauty, not even wanting to step out the door.
But her feet were not hers to command; after wrapping her in the long down jacket, Shane directly grabbed her arm and dragged her out the door, stuffing her into the black Rolls-Royce parked by the roadside outside the courtyard.
Shane settled into the car, fastening her seatbelt, teasing her as she pouted: "Admit it, you’re just not smart."
Audrey was already upset, and his words obviously added fuel to the fire.
After fastening the seatbelt, Shane started the car and said: "Others do wear little dresses, but on the way, everyone wraps themselves in a big coat and just takes it off upon arriving at the venue. Haven’t seen anyone as cold-resistant as you."
Audrey felt slightly comforted by his words.
But immediately Shane added: "But no matter what you wear, it’s pretty much the same; no need to pay too much attention to these things. Taking off the down jacket doesn’t make you any prettier."
Audrey was so furious, she turned and snapped at him: "Fine, later at the party, whoever you find prettier, just go with them!"
