Chapter 51 - Gavin versus Erick. Lion versus Wolf.

After the group of staff left the lobby area, Gavin turned to face his friends. "Looks like Christmas day came early for me. I get to pound that lion into the ground in the first round," he said with a broad smile on his face. He was really looking forward to getting to prove to the new kids just how strong Allario students were.

Erza frowned as she looked at him. "You had better be careful with them," she said. She was faced with a random opponent from Daedalus and not the female twin that she wanted to beat down. It seemed Helena was selected to be her opponent. Erza and Gavin were selected in the first batch of ten to compete, while Helena was in the second, and Jackson was in the third batch.

One of the staff members from behind the desk came out to stand in front of the students. "Will the first ten students from Allario step forward, and the first ten students from Daedalus step forward," he said as he called for the first round of participants. Gavin stepped forward, as did Erza and eight others from Allario academy. Gavin smirked as he saw Erick and nine others from Daedalus stand and walk forward. He could tell his eyes were already glowing red as he glanced at his opponent. He was itching for this fight to begin. He wanted to make the punk eat the cruel taunting words they spoke earlier to one of the female students.

"Now, you will all follow me. No fighting before we arrive at the arena floor, or you will be disqualified immediately," the man said with a stern frown as he looked over the twenty students that showed up. He turned and led the way out of the lobby and down the hall.

Once they arrived at the arena, Gavin smiled in appreciation. It seemed like the entire Allario school was attending it from the bleachers while an equally impressive number of students from Daedalus were on the other side. On the arena floor itself were ten large circles painted on the ground. Gavin wasn't sure how large exactly they were, but it gave them plenty of room to run around and fight. The cheering and screams of the students up in the stands was almost deafening as they appeared on the floor. Each student went over to the appropriate battle circle that had their faces and names displayed in the air on a holographic display.

Gavin leaned into Erza and whispered, "I can tell you still aren't at one hundred percent, so please be careful. If need be, I will willingly lose my spot and intervene if your fight goes badly." Gavin looked at her with so much tender love and affection that it stole Erza's breath suddenly. Tears pricked her eyes as she pulled him in for a searing kiss in front of everyone there. But she didn't care. She wanted everyone to know that she loved this crazy wolf boy. She was his mate and mother of his future unborn child. Her head spun as she broke the kiss. She smiled at him as she said, "Go kick some butt, I'll finish mine quickly so you don't even have to worry," she said, trying to reassure him.

Gavin felt a strong wave of desire hit him at the love and feelings she evoked in him with that searing kiss. He heard someone behind him scoff in disgust at the public sign of affection. He turned to see Erick looking his way with hatred and annoyance in his face. "If you're done acting like a horny love sick child, I have a fight to win," he said, taunting Gavin. "Maybe I should remove the woman if she is such a distraction to you, mangy mutt."

"Damn," Erza muttered against Gavin's lips as she sucked in a breath. Erick really shouldn't have said that. She glared at him from behind Gavin. "I hope you live to regret that particular brand of stupidity." Erza said coldly as her own eyes glowed yellow, but this time something strange happened. They were their normal yellow shade, but the outside of the pupil was ringed with a tint of red.

Gavin looked at her, stunned and confused, but didn't press the matter. Right now he was furious and was looking forward to letting off some steam. For that brand of stupidity, Gavin was going to beat the punk to within an inch of his worthless life. Gavin turned, his eyes already glowing a burning bright red.

Gavin walked over, his manaflow surging out from his body into chaotic waves of energy. His anger and bloodlust were growing by the minute over Erick's disrespect over Erza. The normally invisible waves of mana were a swirling deep red as Gavin walked over to the battle circle to face Erick. People gasped and hurried out of his way as he stepped into the area.

Erick smirked as he watched Gavin's little display of power. He wouldn't admit it out loud, but the fact his mana was a visible wave of energy was absolutely terrifying. But two could play that particular game. Erick's eyes glowed red in response to the lion surging to the surface. He released his own mana, and it matched Gavin's in intensity. Waves of golden energy collided with red as the two students faced off with each other.

"All participants ready? Begin!" A loud voice over the speakers rang out through the grand arena. Gavin wasted no time, and instantly shifted into his black werewolf form. Black fur manifested over his body as he snarled in anger, hatred and pure rage. He threw his head back and activated his skill. Hunters Howl activated. Veronica's soft voice filled Gavin's head as he threw back his head and let loose the mighty howl.

Only this time, something strange occurred. The swirling red waves of energy seemed to condense and when he let loose the baleful howl, they went flying solely in one direction, focusing on Erick. No one else seemed to be victim to the fear and paralyzing effect. It was as if somehow, a concentrated, targeted form of the skill was being directed towards one single individual, Erick.

When Erick saw that Gavin had instantly shifted into his werewolf form, he responded in kind. Golden fur covered his body. A thick dark red mane appeared around his neck as his red eyes glowed vibrantly against the golden fur. He heard Gavin release the mighty howl and braced himself. He threw his head forward, inhaled deeply and let out a mighty roar that seemed to counter the effects of the hunters' howl skill.

When Gavin's howl and Erick's roar collided, the powerful energy waves exploded upon contact. The resulting explosion sent shock waves through the arena. As the waves spread out and impacted some of the other students, it caused them to stumble forward a few steps. Everyone looked over, forgetting their own matches were going on as Gavin and Erick charged each other with a feral animal intensity. This was no longer a tournament fight between schools. This was an animal kingdom grudge match between two powerful alpha shifters.

Gavin charged in forward as soon as he let loose the skill. He knew it wouldn't work, but anymore it just felt strange not to start with the skill. He ran at full speed as he threw out a mighty right hook, intending to catch Erick on the left side of his face. He was going to beat this boy down, blow-by-blow, until he begged Gavin to stop. Erick covered his left arm with hardened stone and blocked the impact. Shockwaves exploded once again from the impact. "Ha! Is that all you got, mangy mutt!" Erick called out in a taunt. He ducked low and tried a sweeping kick to knock Gavin off his feet. The wolfboy jumped high and dodged the strike, landing on the other side of Erick.

"Oh I'm just getting started, filthy house cat," Gavin spat back as he tried for a jumping high kick, aiming for the center of the were-lion's back. His rage and bloodlust were increasing by the minute and it was making it hard for Gavin to think properly. His animal instincts were screaming at him to make his opponent submit in the most brutal way possible. To make Erick acknowledge him as the superior alpha species.

Erick ducked low and punched the ground. As he did so three large spikes of stone flew skyward from the ground, intending to impale Gavin.

Gavin gritted his teeth as he focused his manaflow and conjured a staff made of condensed and super-heated flame. It's color wasn't the normal hues of red, yellow and orange, but pure white with a hint of blue. He batted away at the spikes before they made contact and landed back on the ground. He growled savagely as he charged, the staff swinging for Erick's head.

Erick cursed as he covered himself with stone-like armor. A massive two-handled battleaxe appeared in his hands, made from the same white stone material. He lifted the battleaxe and met the staff in midair. Sparks flew off from the force of the impact. Erick struggled and growled out in frustration as he pushed against the lean were-wolf. He should not be losing in terms of brute strength. He was a were-lion. One of the strongest shifters of all time. The boy might have him with speed, but Erick should have the upper hand on brute strength. So why was he losing? Erick wondered as he struggled to block Gavin's strikes with the fire staff.

Sparks were flying left and right as the fire staff collided with the stone battleaxe. Every time they thought they had a perfect strike, it was blocked by the other. The cheers and screams of delight from the crowd grew louder and louder as the fight raged on.

Gavin disengaged from Erick. He was barely breathing hard as he glared at the boy. He focused his mana, finally letting lose some of the restrictions he was fighting under. He concentrated and the fire armor from earlier that morning formed over Gavin's body like a suit of dark red armor. Flames covered him and licked at his black fur without burning or singing his body. The intensity was radiating off Gavin with visible steam and smoke as he stalked towards Erick. "You will regret coming to this school," Gavin growled out low as he sprinted forward. He swung the staff down overhead, intending to club the skull in.

Erick growled out, "Screw off mutt," as he lifted the battleaxe and blocked it on the handle of the weapon. The heat from the fire armor and staff was even more difficult for Erick to bear in such close-quarters fighting. The white staff burned through the stone material of the battleaxe, snapping the weapon in two as it collided with Ericks' shoulder. Erick let out a horrible yowl of pain as he felt the bone give way in his right shoulder.

Gavin kicked him square in the stomach and Erick went flying backwards several feet with a loud oof. Before Erick went out of bounds, he slammed the head of the battleaxe into the ground and used it to slow his motions. With that, he also slammed his foot down on the ground and a wall of earthen stone rose up behind him to cushion and stop him. He wiped the sweat off his brow as he glared at the wolf. He tried to roll his shoulder and was unable to do so. Erick thought the shoulder bone was either dislocated or broken from the impact of Gavin's staff.

"Come on, filthy house cat. I'm not done with you yet," Gavin snarled out as he jumped high into the air, spinning the staff with him as he neared Erick. Orbs of fire formed and flew out of staff as Gavin sent multiple large burning balls of fire at the cat, intending to cause as much pain and suffering in this fight as he could.

Erick tried to dodge them, but wasn't able to in time. Several of the orbs landed against the stone armor with a resounding impact. The sound echoed throughout the arena. No other students were fighting now. All eyes were locked on this grudge match of the century happening before their eyes. Most of the witnesses figured the wolf would win. Some had bets on the lion. None were sure exactly how this find would end.

Erick grunted from the pain as he watched the wolf close the distance. His armor protected him from the worst of the fireball damage, but not all. But he would not go down this easily. He was a were-lion for crying out loud. He opened his jaws wide and a bright red force of energy began to gather. It's flaming magic burned bright and brighter as he charged his mana. Right as Gavin landed in front of him, with his staff swinging down for another blow, Erick let lose the mighty breath blast. It send a huge blast of fire magic straight at Gavin.

It connected and sent Gavin flying backwards. His fire armor protected him from the effects of the heat. But the impact still did some internal damage as Gavin landed several feet away. He coughed up blood as he struggled to his feet. Damn it, I got cocky, Gavin thought to himself as he gritted his teeth and forced himself to rise.

HP is currently at sixty points out of one-hundred and thirty.  Veronica called out in warning. That blast did a number to his health points.

Veronica, how much mana do I have left? Gavin asked as he considered something potentially extremely stupid to win this fight.

Mana is at fifty points right now. Veronica answered.

Gavin grinned like a madman as he stood and faced Erick. "Not bad cat, but this fight is over," Gavin taunted. He was about to use his last trick. The biggest double-edged sword he had at the moment.

Erza sucked her breath in as she heard those words. She had a feeling she knew what he was about to do and was beyond angry that he would risk using that skill in this competition. "Don't do it!" she called out. It wasn't worth the potential backlash to his body. She wanted him to win, but not at that cost.

Gavin ignored her warning and grinned, his bloody canines flashing in the light as he looked at the battered body of the were-lion in front of him. "Time for all or nothing," Gavin said. Veronica, activate the overdrive skill. Gavin said, time for this fight to end, one way or another.
