Chapter 49 - Preparation for the Competition.

The crowd was thick as Gavin and the group arrived at the entrance to the arena. Gavin looked around and noticed it appeared to be a mix of all three grades of students that were making their way through the arena doors. He didn't see any black and green uniforms mixed in with the students of Allario.

Gavin grabbed Erza's hand and squeezed it gently as they joined the crowd of students. A few of them noticed Gavin and the others and nodded, calling out in greeting to them. They responded in kind as they joined the wait to enter. The noise and buzz of the surrounding students was almost deafening. The excitement was almost thick enough to cut with a knife.

Everyone talked among their friends, wondering who was going to participate, who was going to fight against who, and just how strong the students might be from Daedalus academy. Large opulent golden banners were draped to the left of the main entrance, the fiery phoenix symbol of Allario academy emblazoned on the front, rising from the flames below it. To the right were black and red banners with a golden sun and hammer, the symbol of Daedalus academy.

Gavin smiled, his fangs caught the mid-morning light with a flash. He was brimming with excitement. This would be his time. His test to see just how much his training and studying would pay off. Irrefutable proof of his continued growth and prowess. He was unsure if it would be single battles or not, either way he was confident with their chances.

A few weeks ago, professor Okeeba passed around a sign up list for all students interested in competing. Naturally all four of his group signed up for the competition. From what Gavin heard, Bradley had also signed up with some other second year students. Bradley seemed to be somewhat changed over the past month since the attack at the academy. He seemed more respectful, serious and kept his distance from Gavin and his group of merry misfits.

Either way, Gavin was actually looking forward to seeing how well Bradley had improved in his own right.

Erza paused as she noticed the strange look on Gavin's handsome face. It was one of utter excitement and enthusiasm as he waited for their chance to enter the arena. She smiled knowingly. He was looking forward to this competition she knew. She was nowhere near at one hundred percent, but would do her best to support him.

Other worries filled her mind though. She was almost certain without a doubt she was carrying his child. Their weeks together when she first moved up here to stay with him, they couldn't keep their hands off eachother. It was almost a nightly occurrence for them to be together. She shook her head as she remembered they never once used protection. A slight blush crept up her cheeks as she remembered their intimate encounters and the passion they shared. A soft, sly smile spread over her pale features at the memory as she felt a sudden wave of desire fill her. She shouldnt feel like this, but she was dying to have a piece of him sooner, rather than later.

Gavin turned and flashed her his bright eyed grin. "This is going to be so awesome," he said. His tone was laced with all the excitement of a kid at Christmas and Erza couldn't help but laugh with joy. She loved seeing him like this. Unbothered, not worried or beaten down by the cruel world and fates demands.

"Yeah, these fools don't know who they're messing with," Jackson said from in front of them as they entered the arena. The entry way was long since repaired since the attack happened. The doors and windows were reinforced with magic, stone, and technology. They should in theory be able to survive another attack like the one from before.

Inside the entryway were multiple temporary tables set up with staff taking down the names of the participants and offering directions for the sections where specific students were to be seated. The lines moved fairly quickly despite the sheer number of students moving into the facility. Allario academy staff were nothing, if not efficient.

Gavin and the others approached the man at the table and gave their names. Gavin told the man all four were combat participants for the competition. He took their names, marked down the ranks on their armbands and said, "Alright, you four head over down the hallway to the right. Follow the signs and directions posted to the waiting area for further instructions. Good luck in the competition. Do your school proud."

Erza thanked the man and the four of them left the area and headed down to the right with other students involved in the competition. This direction had considerably less students walking compared to the main entryway. Gavin felt like he could actually move without bumping into someone.

Helena bounced around with excitement as she kept her eyes on everyone nearby. She chatted away about nonsensical matters with Jackson as they walked. She couldn't wait to let out some energy in a battle. They turned a few corners and walked through a set of wooden double doors.

Once inside there were dozens of students from both academy's seated on opposite ends of the room. The dark green and black military uniforms a stark contrast to the non-uniformed civilian clothes of Allario academy. The tension was ripe in the room as students of both academies talked among themselves in hushed whispers. It was as if they expected the other side to start attacking.

Gavin chuckled as they walked over to join the students from Allario. Benches lined both sides of the room as they walked to join them. Suddenly, Gavin caught a whiff of a familiar scent that instantly set him on edge.

"Look Kayla, the pack of weaklings rejects are here to play. Go back home rejects. This area is for combatants only," a familiar male voice called out. All eyes in the room focused on the voice and a collective sharp gasp came from the students of Allario as they knew of Gavin's group by reputation. Gavin in particular was known to never back down from a fight.
