Chương 417: A god's desire

"What is it what's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?"

The white-haired man, who had his arms spread open with a wide grin on his face, asked the opposing person, his tone indicating that he didn't mean to ask but rather, humiliate the other.

"Right right, you don't know, you don't remember!"

"...What do you want to say?"

For some reason, Roy couldn't move from his position or say anything. He'd come here first to try his luck and attempt to stop this man's crazed plans, be it by conversation or by force, yet, he refrained from charging forward. Not immediately, at least.

With brows knitted, he glared at his old friend, asking him to explain more. If this was going to be the last time they'd meet, then it wouldn't hurt to hear this person's words.

"So you finally see me worthy enough to have a conversation with."

"Since it'll be the last time we'll meet each other."

"Is that so?" Despite his dejected tone, Samuel had a pretty bright expression. "Well, that's right. I mean, I'm the truest scum, the filthiest dust in the universe, right? That's why it's so humiliating for such a person as you to chat with me. You hate me, don't you, my prince? Everything is my fault. All this misery was caused by me, hmm? Is that what you think?"

"....."

"Since it's the last time we'll hold a conversation like this, as you said, why don't be honest with each other?"

Faced with Samuel's hysterical laughter, Roy couldn't help but close his eyes and take a deep breath. Thoughts whirled in his head, blended with distant memories and deeply buried emotions. He shook his head at the incoming headache and opened his mouth.

"It was both of us who decided to perform those experiments. It's not entirely your fault. None of us knew what would happen once we achieved results, and nothing was intentional."

When the calamity first befell them, Roy couldn't help but constantly blame his friend for everything. It was his idea to explore an unknown chain and extract power from it. It was also he who created small devices to resist against the same power. If it wasn't for Samuel's invention, if it wasn't for the small device he handed to Roy, he wouldn't have to go through this all. If he died along with the others when his world was being erased from existence, how great would that be?

He held the grudge for ages and blamed Samuel for everything. Each time destruction befell a world Roy had settled in, he couldn't help but wish he'd suffer unbearable pain for ages, unable to die or break free. For a long while, all he thought was revenge, and after some time, he couldn't help but agonize over his past foolishness for trusting such a devil.

But ultimately, he couldn't deny the truth. No matter how ambitious Samuel was, if Roy hadn't allowed him to seek results, the final outcome would be different.

Did Samuel know what would happen if he manipulated the chain? He didn't. All he sought was a way to save their hometown, the land that Roy was supposed to rule. He never desired its fall or complete annihilation.

They both agreed to mingle with something they couldn't fathom. If there was anyone to blame, it'd be the two of them.

"However, that doesn't justify your actions. It doesn't clear the blood you've spilled and the lands you've destroyed. The first incident was inevitable, but the rest... You didn't have to go to such lengths and bring about calamities to other worlds. Our land perished because of us, why did you have to cause the other lands to face such an outcome?"

While Roy spent his time trying to figure out a way to stop the waves of Chaos and the spreading calamity, Samuel added fuel to the fire. He manipulated the flow of universal powers, created various types of devices in numerous worlds, and pushed countless deaths forward. He went to other worlds, acting as a saint in some and as a royal in others, tricking people, committing unforgivable sins, and speeding up the world's end. His actions only got crazier and crazier over time.

He's tried before. Pushing his feelings aside, Roy attempted many times to win him over, befriend him again, and gain his help in putting a stop to all the destruction. However, he was disappointed every time. No matter what he did, it seemed that this man couldn't be talked through, neither by words nor by force.

So all he could do was form a plan that went against Samuel's.

"Oh hahaha! Is that so? Pffft! Very interesting. My prince, you are as interesting as ever!"

Samuel chuckled and giggled, seemingly having found the redhead's words quite funny. Wiping the tears from his eyes, the white-haired man did a bow as if showing respect to this long-forgotten royalty.

"However, my prince, have you ever asked yourself if what you know is the full story or not?"

"...?"

"Tell me." Samuel took a joyous step forward, leaning towards his opponent, whispering to his ear, "Do you really think a mere human, no matter how smart and capable, can so easily understand the complicated concept behind the creation and continuation of the universe?"

"...."

A tilt to his head and a frown on his forehead. Roy's confusion crept clear to his face.

"Right, that's right. Think about it. Was that actually it? Is this really the story of a desperate genius who fiddled with the chain and drew his world to obliteration as a result? Do you think I was the sole genius in the extent of the whole universe? Was I the smartest? Was I the best?"

"...What do you-"

"Nope! Listen!"

Before Roy could react, Samuel's pale hand moved at an unfathomable speed and pressed against Roy's mouth.

"Listen well, listen well!"

"...??"

For some reason, Roy couldn't take even a single step back. No. He didn't want to do that.

"You don't remember anything, do you? Of the time when The Reason summoned you to its side, of the words you spoke, and of the favor it asked of you. You don't remember anything, do you?"

Releasing Roy's mouth, the white-haired man took a step back.

"You've erased those memories, haven't you?"

Shrug Shrug

"I don't know what happened to you after that last meeting, but it must've shaken you quite a lot, huh? For you to change your whole plan because of it... Hmm~ It must've been related to that child."

Shrug Shrug

"Not that it's important right now."

Samuel stared at his reflection inside the crimson irises and yet another smile emerged on his lips.

"It'd be nice if we had the leisure and time to share some memories, huh?"

A brief blink cut off the reflection of the white-clothed individual. Once opened back, there was a faint ripple inside the crimson waters.

"Explain."

"Hoho!"

The sky above them was rumbling. The pillar of light kept piercing the heavens even without its master's presence. It looked like a strangely colored river flowing through through the stars.

"As I just said, this is The Reason's wish."

Contrary to a few seconds ago, Samuel's voice was devoid of any emotion, neither did he smile or joy.

"She was a god. A being its concept unfathomable, yet trapped inside a cycle, unable to leave. You should be able to understand how the diety felt, right? You and I are probably of the few ones who can truly feel The Reason's suffering."

To be imprisoned in this universe by the shackles of immortality. Witnessing all but able to change none. Wishing for an ending, yearning for a new beginning, but stuck in between life and death, incapable of reaching any.

Of course, Roy could understand that kind of feeling.

The two men's eyes locked with each other, one frowning while one, smiling.

"Thus, that unending entity who was long tired of life, sought out someone who could help it escape the chain."
