Chương 418: In the dreams

It was still clear like day to him.

Despite it being thousands of years in the past, he could remember that time with no difficulty. Those scenes, those memories, all were long craved inside the root of his soul, unerasable.

The scientist was young and desperate. His mind was set on finding a way to help his country overcome the crises and survive the war. There was nothing he hadn't tried and no method he hadn't studied; yet, he could not discover anything useful.

His days were short and the minutes passed fast. The day of the fall was near. He got to do something. He needed to grab the tiniest thread of hope. Hasn't he already seen much? Wasn't the deaths of his family enough? His parents, his sister, his brother, he'd already lost too many people, he couldn't bear to lose any more.

Not his country, not his sole friend, not his future king.

That day wasn't far.

However, something changed everything in an instant. A small idea, a distant voice, a blurry dream. It was a repeated reminder, a faint whisper in his ears, in his mind, in his heart.

An idea bloomed in his head. A theory that wasn't his.

Despite attempting to resist the alien thoughts, the temptation finally got over him after being exposed to the same dream for weeks. The dreams were showing him a way to save his country. Why would he refuse? Despite his having an initial fear of the unknown, he doubted things could get worse. What could possibly go wrong with a country that would fall anyway?

Thus, he began working on a project after gaining his good friend's approval. The idea which initially seemed absurd progressed to show results, and eventually, things turned out to become fine for his country.

To say that he wasn't overjoyed would be a big fat lie. He had the feeling of a hero or a prophet chosen by god. Wasn't he really chosen by god? He was sure the voice in his dreams introduced herself as such a being.

It was only times later that the truth dawned on him. The realization that such a thing as an entity with good intentions didn't exist. That playing with something called the universal chain wasn't what a mere human should do to save a country. That he was no savior, but the sole cause of his homeland's eternal destruction.

That he was played with.

Now, would it be wrong if he tried to finish the project he'd started? It was that god's desire, after all. It wanted to set free of its unending life. That was what she, herself, told him. When The Reason's life was finally coming to an end, when the deity summoned the few beings to have a chat with them, she revealed the bitter truth in front of the two men who had lost their everything to that god's selfishness.

She had no regrets, no remorse. She was rather glad that it was finally the end for her. The Reason was such a god. It shattered its consciousness and powers to create other entities to replace her existence and then, vanished forever. She even had the audacity to invite him and his old friend and propose to them a chance to replace her place in keeping the chain connected.

Such an oblivious god.

So, was it wrong of him to want to accept that proposal?

Samuel chose to be fooled once again.

In this universe with a half-broken wheel, he'd become the single reason. He'd smash the chain once and then rule the land forever. He'd erase everything. He'd devour the whole universe with chaos.

What would remain of the eliminated lands? A void.

Samuel would rule The Void which was going to replace the universe.

"Isn't that a truly magnificent plan?"

With his arms spread open, the man's colorless pupils shifted to the roaring sky. Joy was written all over his expression.

"...That..."

Was indeed unexpected.

'He was deceived by The Reason?'

The man's explanations were hard to believe, both because he wasn't someone whose words could be trusted and also because he told a story that wasn't Roy could accept so easily. To blame a god for the destruction of numerous worlds... It was truly an unexpected story.

But what if it were the truth?

"Well... That won't change anything."

Even if they were tricked by that diety and forced to bring about annihilation to their land, even if they were nothing but pieces of chess all this while, his goal wouldn't change.

"I can't allow you to do as you please."

The past didn't matter to him at the moment, what he cared about was whether he could save the future or not.

"I see."

The reply came fast and short. The white-haired man cast his gaze back down at his old friend.

"There is no other choice then."

Roy's hand rose to the air. Golden currents cracked around his fist.

"Yeah."

The air around them vibrated. Golden light shot out in all directions. The sunlight-colored cracks jumped around in the air as they headed toward the light-emitting device, ready to seep into the pillar of light piercing the sky.

"So what do you plan to do?"

As if watching a child's play, Samuel's gentle expression didn't falter a tiny bit. The actions of this long-fallen royalty didn't pose any danger to him and his plans. He was as relaxed as a middle-aged man would be while reading newspapers.

"You were right."

Roy's crimson eyes shifted up to glance at the sky, a dome about to fall apart.

"I've forgotten a lot of things."

It was only after Samuel pointed it out that he realized a huge part of his memories were missing. The memories related to his meeting with The Reason for the first and last time. He didn't have much recollection of that time.

When explaining the overall structure of the universe to that child, to Reynold's reincarnation, he sensed something amiss, yet he wrote it off as the fleeting of memories due to his long lifespan. However now, he finally understood that it wasn't as simple as an amnesia due to old age.

"There were two contracts, I see."

"Hmm?"

Just as Samuel tilted his head in confusion, his expression went blank. In a brisk movement, he whirled on his heels and turned around. Across from him was a crimson pillar of light. Dancing inside the pillar, tiny cracks swayed around akin to molten gold.

"This..."

It was only then that he realized.

The gold was gradually spreading around. The racks were devouring the crimson pillar bit by bit.
