Chương 416: Various

"Ugh!"

A groan escaped his lips as a sharp pain pierced his mind. The boy quavered before he crumbled to the ground, breathless. His whole body was soaked in cold sweat and he could feel pain all over. Though he wasn't in any dangerous condition, he felt his insides burning up.

There was pain with no reason for it.

With one hand still over the machine, the boy curled his body and gasped, coughing and groaning from time to time. His thoughts were in a shamble and his mind was all over the place; he couldn't distinguish which pain came from his body and which from his soul, he couldn't discern which memory belonged to him and which one was a mirage of the past.

He remained in that state for an unknown time, struggling to find his lost self in between the scattered memories.

"Argh, that damned man."

Welled-up frustration burst open, driving him to curse the red-haired man whose picture didn't leave his vision. He wanted to punch that fool in the face, but he was out of his reach, and even if Roy was close by, the boy doubted he could bring himself to harm him.

"Huff... Huff... Huff..."

The water droplets sliding down his cheeks soon turned into a stream of uncontrollable tears.

'That wasn't me. That wasn't me.'

Understanding that fact didn't reduce any of the suffocating emotions he was feeling, rather, the burning of his heart intensified upon that realization.

"...Ren!"

Just after coming back to his senses, Kairen managed to hear his surroundings. One man was continuously shouting his name from some distance. The whole area was shaking intensely and a bright pillar of light was shooting up from the machine to the sky.

Kairen knew without looking who was calling his name and what was going on. Probably due to his unusual situation and close connection to the device, he managed to distinguish his identity from Reynold's; yet, that didn't help subside his messed up emotions at all.

"Argh, damn! Damn!"

Why was he crying? What was there to be sad about? That was all in the past. That wasn't his life either! He had to forget it all. He had to forget all those useless memories.

Before Kairen could sort out his thoughts, his body suddenly froze upon feeling a chilling sensation all over. His hair stood up at their end and cold sweat instantly drenched his back. A very strong threatening aura was approaching at a fast speed. It was a power Kairen couldn't even imagine courting.

BAAAAAAANGGGG

An external blast of energy slammed against the pillar, shaking it ruthlessly and nearly, breaking it apart.

"Gah, this-"

Kairen gritted his teeth and clung to the machine, using all of his might to maintain the pillar.

'Samuel?'

Was this his doing? There was only one entity besides Roy who could wield such power. Was he trying to invade this world?

Despite not knowing the details of what was going on, Kairen understood his mission and poured all his remaining power into the machine. Fortunately for him, the pillar wasn't broken down completely, and no further attacks occurred after that.

'Something must've interfered with it...'

Probably Roy, he thought.

Was there something he could do? But he didn't have the power to interfere in between those two even if he wanted to.

Kairen struggled to get up, but his body didn't follow his will and he collapsed again after barely lifting to his feet. It was only then that he realized the pain running through his insides belonged to him and not something in his memories.

"Ugh..."

Looking down, he found the floor littered with crimson liquid. His clothes were somehow sticky too. Once Kairen lowered his head, he found them wet with blood.

'Huh...?'

But he was fine until a few seconds ago? He was indeed in pain but Kairen could tell that it was the remnant of Reynold's sensations and not something stemming from his body. But now, his limps were gradually burning up, and small and large cuts were emerging from all over the body, as if he was being cracked down, gradually breaking into pieces. The pain, burning each cell akin to the flames of hell, was enough to bring tears to his already crying eyes and make his mind buzz.

Did he sustain injuries because of that clash?

'Also these... these are similar to Reynold's state before his... uh, his death...'

"REN!"

BANNGG

A loud shout and echoing noise. Kairen's gaze shifted back to their source. He found his brother doing his best to walk past the pillar of light and get close.

His efforts didn't bear any fruit though. The barrier of light deflected any kind of attack and pushed the man back ruthlessly, burning up his clothes and lashing his skin in the process.

What was that man thinking of doing? Had he lost his mind?

Kairen opened his mouth to tell him to stop, however, a burst of hot liquid blocked his words as soon as he intended to utter something.

'Ah... Blood,' he thought, already used to it.

Was it because of Reynold's memories, or was it he who had grown in an abrupt way? He was so calm in the chaotic situation. Despite still shedding tears due to his boiling-up emotions and pain, his mind was surprisingly calm.

BAAANGGG

His brother, on the other hand, seemed to be even more triggered. Ignoring him, Kairen looked back at the device while doing his best to breathe in between his continuous sobs and gasps.

'This is different...'

From the memory he remembered, something differed this time.

'It's connected to somewhere else, not just this world.'

Upon concentrating on the flow of energy, he could sense the pillar of light's pathway. There was a huge wave of energy just nearby, wandering around threateningly as if ready to strike at any moment. Also, far in an unknown place, the pillar in Kairen's control was connected to another stream of energy, this was mellow and somewhat cool, soft and tranquil.

He felt a familiarity with this energy. It was something he'd witnessed countless times.

Kairen took a few seconds to finally remember the source of the power.

'Kain?'

Was the thing he was feeling actually related to the activation of the device in The Void?

And it wasn't just that. Despite the mellow energy fellow being the most noticeable one, there were other energy threads slowly building up and connecting to each other akin to building a network.

'Countless similar devices... in various worlds...'

Unlike the pillars activated by Kairen and Kain, the other devices seemed to be responding to the energy fellow and sucking up universal powers from the light streaks being supported by two. It was as if they were automatically activated and connected to them with no one to support them.

'It's as if we have created the root of the network.'

That must be why Samuel tried to attack him as soon as the device was activated.

'I wonder what's going on over there...'

Wherever they were or whatever was going on, it'd be over if it ended soon enough.

'Because I can't keep this up for long.'

. . . . . . . . .

In a world, where the skies were red and the ground was collapsing, a sudden spark of light flashed through the chaotic land. The crimson light which connected the skies to the ground, soon faded and a figure emerged from within. It was a man with hair as red as the sky.

"Hah! Hahaha!"

The person standing in front of him had his arms spread open, chuckling nonstop while watching the destruction unfold.

"Stop this madness at this moment."

Samuel's laughter intensified at those words.

"Stop it? Why? Let's create a brand new universe, old friend, let's build up a single, everlasting world!"

With his lips stretched to his ears, Samuel playfully leaned a bit closer to his old lord.
